Enchantra
OK, I know a lot of people on here, including me use various Spices in basing for leaf litter and other foliage. This is just a kind of a survey of sorts. What do you use and why do you prefer it over other spices? I've used Presti's Italian Seasoning, and Dried Basil and Dried Oregano. Kheprera
Actually I haven't tried spices yet. I've heard tales from some people on other forums who used things like cinnamon and cloves, sealed the mini and left it outside only to check later to find ants and other insects all over said mini, eating it. So for now I'm sticking with non-edible basing materials. Especially with a baby on the way I don't want them to think the potpourri scent means the mini is food. Although... that's a great idea. Big dragon mini, sell for about $75-100, and market it as a handpainted potpourri air freshener.

As for leaving a mini outside and finding ants and other bugs on it, well it also depends on how well you seal things. I tend to give my base a rather good soaking with varnish so that later on when I want to clean it, a good swish in some water isn't going to harm it any. I've never had problems with bugs. Kheprera
A lot of people will go for several layers of Dullcoat rather than one heavy layer, and I think that's what was happening. Layer one, dry, layer two... ants?

Layer one, dry, layer two... ants? Quite posibly that is what is happening. I coat in gloss first, allow to dry. Then I apply the matte sealant. And sometimes I use several coats. I also usually seal in the garage upon a table to, away from critters.

I was thinking about making a incence burner with my OOP Clan War Fire Dragon once i got it painted. Either that or a RP/Iron wind T'char[its back in production ] though T'char is smaller and might fetch less. Its a tough call which group would pay more though; Someone who is into potpourri would likely have more disposable income, but the person into incence might be more used to shelling out larger sums of money for habits and hobbies. Digital M@
If you have a cat I would also suggest staying away form spices. My cat loves to bite the heads and chew on spears and other weapons, I would not want to further entice the kitty with spices.

Paintrix
I've used them a lot in the past, but not so much recently. Some spices will fade badly, I've found, even when the mini is stored away from light (as it should be). I don't know if UV protectant sealer will fully prevent it. To be on the safe side, I'm not using spices on anything that I want to be a showcase piece these days.
Enchantra
UV protectant sealer is good for situations where the item is exposed to sunlight. Since minis are not exposed to sunlight, I don't know how UV protectant would help.
Hells_Clown
I've started using parsley. It rarely gets used and looks like old dried leaves and debris. I have a small bag of it along with regular flock, static grass, etc. I like the mustard seed cobblestone idea, I'll have to try that one soon. PS Enchantra, did you get my message?
