65113: Moor Hound

[Adrift]

"Many adventurers speak bravely about facing the enlarged rats of Haglynch Swamp. Many adventurers die swiftly in the final realization that they aren't up against rats."

 

This paint job was inspired by the albino Barghest miniature I got playing in a D&D Miniatures release event many years ago. Barghests have always been a favorite monster of mine, so I borrowed some inspiration from that figure. I Googled some images of moors and decided to try and make a base to correspond. I'm still not clear on the differences between swamps, bogs and moors but I think he looks appropriate.

 

Oh and a special thanks to Metalchaos for doing his dragonlion with the water so that I'd get off my butt and finally give the Realistic Water a try.

Couldn't resist trying out some water effect eh? Base look great, actually a little too nice for one of your quick paint jobs. One thing I would have done, and it's something I need to try out myself, is glazing your flesh colors over the pink veins so they actually look like they're under the skin.

Love the base, it really conveys swamp/bog/moor, especially with the broken tree limbs there. And the eyes really stand out as well, that little touch of blue really offsets the skin well.

 

The pink on the face is a little offsetting, but then again, it is a barghest...

VERY COOL! The flesh color is OUTSTANDING, & a choice I never would have thought of myself...love different/creative approaches. AND the base is a thing of BEAUTY. VERY WELL DONE!

As for the veins...this is why I should do every piece as WIP thread; help remembering little things like that.

One of the reasons I love to paint up monsters, you can literally paint it up to be any vision.

My only critique is I find the colour on the lips a bit strange. Presumably the veins and muzzle are coloured by its blood, so Id expect the lips to be more the same colour as well.

I wanted a color to bridge from the darker mouth to the pinkish muzzle. My lips/gums are colored by the same blood as that of my arteries and veins, but they aren't the same color as my skin. Why can't his?

With regards to the basing...this is the same argument I've tried making with ObsidianCrane!! We gotta get him on board!!

 

With regards to the white shading, I actually blended a brownish-yellow with a medium grey to create the darker portions. This gives me some warmth from the yellow, and cool from the grey but neither dominates.

I dont think its so much the darkness exactly thats tripping me up, just the precise colour hue. On humans I would say lip colour tends to be a cross between the colour of our blood and the colour of our skin. With the pink blood and a relatively uncoloured skin tone, I would assume the lips would just a be a darker version of the veins colour - probably a purple, whereas here its skewed a bit more into the red instead of purple. More like the tongue colour, now that I think of it, although then theres the issue of whether it adds enough interest if you make the tongue and lips the same.

 

Hmm... if you roughed it up the outline a bit you could say the blood colour isnt the hound's blood at all ;)

Keep in mind the blood in lips is arterial (and thus more brightly red) than your veins and there is less skin over it making the red more prominent - especially in people with whiter skin.
