brushforhire
I recently found a new use for my table top belt sander. I use it to grind down the broccoli bases on the bottom of minis. Much easier for me to grind down base then to accidently cut into the feet of my selected mini. Plus getting the broccoli base nice and thin makes it easy to glue to a flat plastic base for a unit of figures.
estrus
Okay, tutorial: get an old vitamin bottle just big enough for your paint pots to fit in. Get an electric knife, and "safety" one blade by dulling or taping over. Bind pill bottle to single, dulled blade. Electrical tape works beaut. Insert single, dulled blade into knife body and paint bottle into pill bottle. Update will and disability insurance. Activate knife. Like any power tool, this is not safe. The dulled blade is not safe. If you do not remain alert and paranoid, it will turn on you and mutilate you. ooooh! I'm gonna try this with my sawzall - reciprocating saw I think it's called. The blade is pretty long, so I could duct tape 4-6 bottles and shake em all at once! Thanks for the tip!

estrus
Also, I am loving my lowes worklights, I use clamp-on desk lamps from Staples, with the adjustable spring-loaded arms. I have three of them attached in different places on my painting table so I can adjust my light as needed - they also double as my photography lighting. I have another small clip-on light with the bendable metal arm type of thing for use with my used-to-be-a-coffee-can homemade curing oven. Love these from IKEA: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20370383/ I have a similar setup, one on either side of my desk and adjust accordingly. MikeD
I actually use my thumbnail for that. Admittedly not quite as much room, but serves the same purpose. And afterward, while I'm out getting food or running errands people always ask me, "Dude, are you wearing nail polish?", so I get to explain to them about my mini-painting hobby, lol... I'm glad I'm not the only one that does this! Some interesting stuff here and I may have to give some of it a try. For myself, I would say my half-round needle file. Its just the best thing for cleaning up mold lines etc. I've got a bunch of other needle files but the half-round is the one I keep wearing out. Arachne
My work station is a drawing table that I got when I was in high school from a kindly neighbor. He used it when he started at his ad agency in the 50s. It's got this cast iron filigree base that weighs about 300 pounds, and it adjust to all tilts and heights. I have it just straight right now, but I really really love that thing. I used it for various non-crafty things, till I got into minis, and now it seems like it's found its life's purpose. It's got all these lights clamped on it, and it's by far my favorite tool. Some other favorites are my roll of newsprint, which I use to cover said table, and use as blotter paper. Fun tack, I use it for EVERYTHING. Also, my Kindle. I too listen to audiobooks pretty much the whole time I paint, and I get a lot of "reading" done. Sometimes, I prop it up on a shelf and watch crap TV shows on Netflix, while I paint. I love it because it's tiny. I don't do conversions. Yet. YET. I do have a Dremel stylus on my wish list.
Seer of the Pitt
Since having started painting again, my favorite tool is a MagEyes magnifying visor with a #7 lens. Being able to clearly see what I'm painting or sculpting helps the process tremendously.
