Last Knight
unicorns apparently are velociraptors. This quote made my day. Always happy to be a little ray of sunshine, providing painful, tender burns and blisters to all and sundry.

Exwilly
Never confuse Unicorn with Unicron. One is a giant planet with two horns, the other is a world-destroying creature of insatiable malice. dont forget unicron eats planets and unicorns eats.... Sanael
I'm so glad to see someone else who reads Glen Cook. And, on topic, unicorns should be terrifying when roused.I haven't given a party reason to fight one yet, but the lucky PCs will rue that day. They might also fennel it, but I think that's a different recipe.

And you should be careful; they might rosemary to the occasion. Players would just as leaf have a little spice in their encounters, and it'll be the sort of thing they talk about for years - even if, in the short term, it does herb their enthusiasm a bit. Doug Sundseth
Well, I can tell you from experience that unicorns are tough. What's interesting, though, is that to get a unicorn, you need to have two warbears in the woods without too many others around. ps. You can get a warbear if you have three centaurs in the woods ... NTTAWWT. pps. If you understood that, you're probably a grognard ... and feel free to let me know if you find yourself in Denver and want a game. cmorse
Now that I think on it, I should have bought more than one. A unicorn pack, working like velociraptors. In the Garret, P.I. series (Glen Cook), unicorns apparently are velociraptors. He never describes them, but dewclaws, sharp teeth, and carnivorous habits all come up. Sounds like Glen Cook had been reading P. C. Hodgell.
pocketcthulhu
don't get me wrong it's a great mini, I just never liked the fluffy lovey dovie fantasy stuff unicorns faeries and so on. It depends on how it's used. All of my good Sir Shiny and Cleric Goodheart characters always, naturally, have a peace and love vibe going with the fey beings. So you'd expect my rougher, more violent, chaotic neutrals wouldn't. But, see, the thing is that a fairy, or pixie, or other sparkly silly little creature is only that way until you make it angry. And you don't always know what will make it angry. And let me tell you, one of the scariest things you can ever encounter, guaranteed to traumatize even the most hard-hearted Doomguard, is a Pixie out to avenge the special blue violet flower it dearly loved that you stepped on or picked. Or it might not even be your fault. You're on your way someplace, minding your own business, ready to take the battle to Lord Darkheart of Maliceburg and you just happen to need to pass through a peaceful, green, flowering glen of beauty. So you camp, because it looks nice, and safe, and no trouble could find you here. And that's when you learn the hard way that the creatures who live there are nastily unfond of The Bigs because some careless barbarian mook stomped Tiny Town on his way to get some loot. So you might think a unicorn is lovey-dovey, but it don't look so lovey-dovey when you're rousted out of your bedroll at sunrise in your heroic undies and running as fast as you can to avoid a robust goring. Plus they're smart, and know how to work together. Now that I think on it, I should have bought more than one. A unicorn pack, working like velociraptors. you know I might have to keep that in mind, the current group is all Cn and very what do we want to do with this npc? wear them as a hat Naahhhh there's no profit in that even if it's funny lets sell him. Sanael
LastKnight, I love the Garret books, bit I'm sad to hear you don't like the Black Company books. They are, IMO, some of the finest military memoirs ever written. To stay on topic, I do love the idea of throwing the typical "only drawn to innocence" unicorns into a campaign, just to see how the party interacts with it. "What do you mean it would rather hang out with the rogue? I'm a -paa-aaaladin-!"
Panzer_Engel
There's a standard code we declare our figurines under, which is a classification for toys, non articulated, non electronic, with a few other sub-classifications in there. We worked closely with a customs agent for months, and over a 4 month period, changed our code 4 times as she worked to find the precise code that was most accurate - and at that, our code is so obscure it now just causes confusion, I think! . . . . Ouch. (I now have the urge to ask you to sit down, while I make some tea. . . .) You want to see my preeetee books derie? (How did you know about our Call of Cuthulu adventure with the witch that sent us to the Triasic?) Hm. Sounds like Yūko. . . . Sending them to whenever seems a waste of potential. . . Recruits . .Though; New blood is always welcome.

They might also fennel it, but I think that's a different recipe. I first read the Black Company back when it was first published. I was hooked on that series throughout the rest of the '80s. The first three books, especially, are some of the most riveting fantasy books I've read.
Members SamuraiJack
I just re-read them recently. With the exception of the Silver Spike, they still hold up pretty well. I notice the gaps between events more now than I originally did, but The first 3 and the last 3 are particularly good.
Erifnogard
The first three Black Company books are in my top three or four fantasy series of all time. I like the later series as well, especially the Books of the South, but they are a definitely different vibe.
