Hi!

I have this little boy sitting here, that I picked up for painting, sometime... and this challenge could be a nice time to finally tackle him!

Some background thou: it is not a "miniature". I was working in France and picked him up in a general store (there were more variants, I regret not getting all the different dragons and hydras  ). He is made of a soft-ish plastic, and yet is very finely detailed. It just needs to be taken apart, putty to correct the joints, and a decent paint job.

Would it be ok for submitting?

I just got a Mecha Dragon, of Ral Partha fame ^_^ I'm going to put him in for this challenge. I still want to do some of the Bones KS dragons, but seeing as they aren't here yet, and Mecha is, he gets to go first. Plus, I think he's been waiting around a lot longer to be taken out of his box and given some painted lovin'.

RE: extending the deadline

I thought about this over the weekend and have decided not to extend the Challenge deadline. I'm sorry for those of you waiting for your Bones dragons. I haven't got mine yet either.

When I started the Challenge in January it wasn't meant to be a Bones challenge. It would have been great to have all our figures in March, but it was not a requirement for the Challenge. The Challenge is open to all manufacturer's figures, not just Reaper, because I know a lot of you already have dragons from other companies. I feel there are enough options for people to find figures to paint without waiting on their Bones shipment. To reinforce this, Reaper has graciously offered prizes for the Contest portion of this, in December, regardless of manufacturer. This is a very special privilege for us, as they won't normally offer prizes for non-Reaper minis.

If you want to wait for your Bones dragons you will still have 4-5 months to paint.

Dumb question For you gamers out there. I am prepping Gauth (slowly), and have a concept for the base. BUT, I am wondering what size base would Gauth be on for gaming purposes?

After all, I do dream I will game again someday. Lol :D

I was planning on doing a series called "The life cycle of the Dragon", beginning with the Reaper hatchlings, then some a familiar from Harwood Hobbies, then the Reaper Juvenile Bones Dragon than a giant Dragon from Drake (which I have no idea when I'll get). I want to top all that off with a Mistress of Dragons. She's a Dark Sword Valkrie with a small dragon perched on her shoulder.

Can I do a series of dio's like this as long as I also have a huge Dragon?

Entry threads are finally up.

I'd like to apologize for not doing this sooner as I don't really have an excuse and I hope people are still able to enter the Diorama category.

First up, Single Dragon Entry thread. There will be one judged prize and 4 random drawings. I can adjust the prize amounts some but I have to stay in budget (so I can't add more drawings without lowering the 1st place price).

Next up is Diorama Entry Thread. This is pretty much like a Painting Excuses contest and is mostly a judged contest with one drawing.

A while ago, I had similar thoughts. I put together this set of measurements based on the D&D ppm dragons. My theory is that, what with muscles and poses and whatnot, it's hard to measure a dragon from snout to tail, so why not measure a constant? That constant for me is the cranium; presumably the head of any dragon is similar in size (if not shape) to that of another dragon of the same age, regardless of species. So I took the D&Dppms available to me at the time and did this:

Small White Dragon: 6mm skull

Medium Blue dragon: 10mm skull

Large red dragon: 17mm skull

Colossal Red Dragon: 80mm skull

Looking at the small, medium, large dragons, we see a pattern of roughly 2/3 increase per size category, so we can extrapolate the other sizes:

Small: 6mm

Medium: 10mm

Large: 17mm

Huge: ~29mm

Gargantuan: ~47mm

Colossal: 80mm

With that, I can measure the skull (cranium only, not including any horns or spines or frills) of any dragon mini I have from snout to the back of the head and have a reasonable idea what size it will work as. I don't adhere strictly to this, and often err on the side of a smaller size, as I have several gaming bases of different sizes that smaller minis can borrow during a game.

As for Gauth, mine is still sealed in box, so I can't measure his skull for you, but I bet he's in the range of gargantuan.
