Painting Excuses Winter Wonderland

A new year and a new Contest. People liked the theme based scoring we did with the Halloween contest so I'm bringing that back, to a degree, but don't worry for those of you who don't like themes as we have an open category where anything will be acceptable, as long as it's Reaper.

Also, to encourage more people to enter, we've got a random drawing for a prize in each category! So even if you're not the best painter in the world you have the chance to win something!

So without further adieu:

Categories

Theme: Winter wonderland or horror-land! This should be fairly self explanatory. For this category there will be extra scoring based off of this theme and they are not lenient at all. Just throwing snow on a base will not net you many points. This category is not limied to a single figure but does not need to be a diorama.

Single Figure Decorative base: My favorite category. There is no theme to this at all but still requires some work to make an over all presentation. This is not a diorama but is intended to be more then just some basic flocking. For this category judges will be extra scoring based off the base.

Open Single Figure: This is a free for all. Enter whatever you like, as long as it's reaper. The judging is also more lax as it's more like the original Painting Excuses contests where a judge scores based off if they like the figure but aren't required to look for\at anything in particular.

Prizes (each category):

1st--$50 reaper online gift card
2nd--$25 reaper online gift card
3st--$15 reaper online gift card

Drawing -- $15 reaper online gift card

General Rules:

  • All entries must be made by Reaper.
  • Entries must be in by February 25 at 11:59 pm MST
  • Enter as many times as you want but only one entry per person per category can win.
  • Each entry needs to be uploaded to the appropriate thread. Please attach your entries using the forum uploading feature or hotlink from the Inspiration Gallery. We want to make sure they're visible at all times.
  • You may submit between one and four images of each entry. They do not need to be stitched into a single image file.
  • Digital enhancement ("Photoshopping") of your entry is strictly prohibited.
    • No clone brush, healing brush, airbrush, or other brush work. Fix your paint with paint, not with Photoshop.
    • No adding or removing background elements from the image
    • If you add a logo or a watermark Reaper cannot use your image in their gallery. Note that if your image is selected for the Reaper gallery, you will be credited by name under the image.
    • Cropping, global color balance, and global level adjustments are allowed ("global" means "the entire image." You may not "pop" colors by only selecting some areas for level adjustment.
  • You are allowed to enter miniatures that will also be entered into other contests that might overlap ours.
  • We are not going to police your entries as to when they were started\finished. We hope that people would paint something for this contest and not just enter something they finished a while ago as this is a fun and friendly contest.
  • The judges or Reaper reserves the right to remove entries if deemed inappropriate, but we're pretty laid back here and this is just to cover our butts.
  • The judges and Reaper can clarify and amend rules at will.

Basing Rules

  • You do not have to use Reaper produced stuff for your bits or for basing.

To clarify the drawing. You can only win the drawing once and you cannot win it if you've won in any category. You only get one ticket per drawing (there is a separate drawing for each category) regardless of how many entries you have in each category.

If there aren't enough entries in a category (3 or less or there's a enough ties so that everyone who entered won) there will be no drawing for that category. The unused prize will not be moved over to a different category.

Aw man, I should've held onto my Ursula, bear rider captain for the decorative base! Boo.

Oh well, just more excuses to paint, paint, paint! I've already got some entries planned for this event and one is fully prepped, just needing to be painted for the decorative base category.

For the themed competition, I need to think on that one. I'd really like to get my ReaperCon entry squared away before worrying about that one. Thankfully, after tonight I have like 4 days/nights off in a row so I can make some legit progress.

Get those official thread entry links ready to go sir!

Hmm, I think I've got something for the decorative base entry that I can do. I just don't have a single thought as to how to do a "winter wonderland" mini. The only thing that comes to mind is snow and ice. Unless I dress it up more in holiday material? I just can't figure out how this theme is supposed to be conveyed...

I'll probably just stick to an Open and D.B. mini.

EDIT: Inspiration! I now have a concept for the theme! I really hope it pans out well ::D:. So excited, now!

Snow and ice are fine but we want more effort then just throwing some snow flocking on the base. Adrift's recent bear captain is a good example of one to do as he's got a frozen river and snow on the bear.

This sounds like encouragement for entering Ursula in the competition. She may just have to make an appearance, even with my other entry planned as well.

Awesome! I was just way overthinking the premise. I didn't grasp the last one well enough, or take the concept deep enough, so this time I was wracking my brain trying to distill the theme down into the very most elaborate idea I could find. Problem was, I couldn't think of a good one! This eases the project a bit for me and I've definitely already got the mini, the scene and maybe some subtle bits to place.

Also, I've started on my Open mini. I put a bit of paint on it yesterday, but today I got really inspired and completely redid my scheme and I think he might be a real beaut in a month!

Ok I think I know what I will paint for this now.

Basing is going to be the hard part for me, but we'll see what I can do.

In early December, I would have stated that there was a greater liklihood of the whole 'Mayan end of the world thing' happening than to see you write these words.
