Barnacles! Giant Barnacles!

From the murky depths (and Antimatter Games) come these horrors of the brine!

I'm likely to use them in the desert for my PCs, but whatever. They're like adorable baby Sarlaacs!

Probably less than five hours' work, so I'm not unhappy with that.

Teskal, the teeth on these are pretty quick'n'dirty, but the principles work for smoother blends, too. Here's how these were done. Paints, unless noted, are all Reaper Master Series.

  1. The gumline was lined with 1:1:2 Carnage Red, Blackened Brown and water. This is the same dark shadow used on the gums themselves.
  2. The tooth was basecoated in 1:1 Faded Khaki and water, leaving the dark red/brown lining in the deepest recess of the gumline.
  3. The top 2/3 of the tooth was painted liberally with 1:1:2 Faded Khaki, Sandy Yellow and water. This layer covers fairly well, creating a gradient in the basecoat without worrying about being particularly smooth. I'm working my way toward the tip of the tooth with each brushstroke.
  4. The top 1/3 of the tooth was coated with 1:1 Desert Sand and water. At this point the tooth looks a lot like beige candy corn, with three distinct color layers.
  5. At this point, I did a heavy wash with Citadel Agrax Earthshade*, pulling the brush perpendicular to the ridges in the tooth. This picks out the striations.
  6. With a light touch, I reapplied the Desert Sand to soften the effect of the Agrax on the tip of the tooth.
  7. I then thinned the Khaki/Yellow mix a bit and softened the transition, this time working my way down toward the root of the tooth.
  8. Being careful not to obscure the red/brown lining, I used a thinner coat of Faded Khaki to soften the transition in the bottom third of the tooth.
  9. In places where my last coats obscured the striations too much, I used a light wash of Agrax Earthshade to pick out the ridges again, pulling the brush parallel to the ridges and away from the tip of the tooth.

Hope that helps!

*They say this is the Devlan Mud equivalent in their new formulations, but IMO the new "Shades" from Citadel aren't nearly as good as the old "Washes" were, and Agrax lacks something of the Devlan.

Thanks for that great info! And FWIW, I've been reading that a number of different folks are using Army Painter's Strong Ink as a fairly decent stand-in for Devlan Mud these days.

No prob. I haven't tried any Army Painter product (aside from black spray primer); are their "inks" actually ink, or something with similar consistency? I've stayed away from inks in general because they reactivate easily if you don't seal them. Any word on that?

There are a few ways you can go. Agrax Earthshade is supposedly just a renaming of the old Devlan Mud, just as Badab Black is now called Nuln Oil. I've heard from MANY people now that this can't possibly be the case, and thatthe new ones are disappointing by comparison. I haven't been at this long enough to have an opinion (never used either). Either way, it's ultimately just a dark brown wash, or a black wash, and there are options out there for both of these.

Devlan Mud replacements:

- Army Painter Strong Tone

- Army Painter Soft Tone (a bit lighter, but good for skin)

- Privateer Press Flesh Wash (halfway between the above 2)

Badab Black replacements

- Army Painter Dark Tone

- Privateer Press Armor Wash

Or, of course, thin down a black paint or ink yourself!

Edit: Sanael - he likely means the small bottles of their quickshade, which is a wash, not an ink. Those are the "tones" that I mentioned above.

Edit again: Here's a useful visual comparison! http://fromthewarp.blogspot.ca/2012/05/devlan-mud-and-badab-black-wash.html
