The Dog-Like but Scaly Kobolds were (AFAIK) the creation of David Sutherland III - one of TSR's illustrators from the early days.

 

The alternative visual to that is from German-Folklore: tiny dwarfs / micro-gnomes / wee little sprites. Brownies by another name.

 

Fur? Not so much.

      After I paingted my Kobolds, I thould I should start with this highness. I was little disappointed, he is sooo much bigger than the other kobolds. He should be smaller, too!
       
      I painted the main colors on him in the last few weeks. If I had to much paint, I put something on him if I thought he should get it.
      Few error correction are still needed and I think he had some rough ecounters with hard objects, because some paint is missing on the back.
