Paizo Pawns & minis on the battlemap together

Just curious has anyone used both together during a game? The pawns that were introduced in the Beginner Box.

 

Just curious if they look odd or good together & such. As the Pathfinder game & possibly the S&W game I'm gonna run at RCon this year calls for a few custom critters & while I'm gonna try & make them. Nice to know I can make unofficial pawns if I do.

 

Really I want my game to look good for the players & such

I say use what you need. I would rather have a pawn on the table with the right picture and size, than the right mini with wrong base size, or the wrong mini with the correct size (so, 40mm gnoll rather than 25mm or saying this ogre is actually a troll, forex).

 

If someone has an issue with it, do you really want them gaming at your table, anyways?

The GMs of the last two Pathfinder Society games I played used pawns; two games ago, GM Alex used pawns while we players used minis; last game, GM Chris used some pawns and some minis. I thought they all looked fine together.

NPCs/creatures that stand up from the map -- whether sculpted miniatures or pawns or fold-up tokens -- look better to me than simple flat markers do. When I run games at stores or conventions, sometimes I use painted figures, I don't always have suitable figures, so I make my own fold-up counters -- for a Medium creature, I cut an index card into a strip 1" wide x 5" long, fold it into a tent-shape with a square base (1" long for the base, then 1.5" p, 1.5" down, then another 1" for overlapping at the base), draw the front view (and sometimes a back view), and then attach the ends at the base with a paper clip.

Anyway, good to know how concerned you are about your players' visual experience!

@DKS How detailed do you usually draw them?

 

@Haldir have you checked out any of the paper minis from One Monk and similar, some free to download, and some of it's pretty cool.

Thanks for the opinions. I appreciate them.

 

I guess I'm more incline to think what they'll look like vs what the player will think. I'm more of a visual presenter then anything. While my beginner game last year at RCon was great (thank you players) the way I presented it really helped push + hey it mad me actually paint cause I had a purpose!! ha ha.

 

Pretty sure I'll go with pawns as they are key elements in the adventure + I remember a couple years I did do the this minis is actually this creature & it got confusing & such.

 

Loim, I was able to find a great tutorial to make pawns pretty much identical to the ones from Paizo so I'm good I just gotta size the artwork to make it look good.

Years ago when we played Champions we desperately needed superhero and supervillain minis, and they were just not to be found.

 

I drew dozens of little stand up figures on museum board with a superfine rapidograph pen.

 

Cardboard figures are a lot of fun when 3D minis can't be found.

I mostly used Cardboard Heroes for my Champions games for the same reasons. I agree that they work just fine (and I wish that I had the skill to turn out decent quality drawings with higher probability and speed.)

Ooh, I remember those. Memory like a sieve -- they were sure available. They're what I patterned ours on. We just had such ... unorthodox, weird characters that we could never find anything even approximate. I may be misremembering, but I think we also needed more types of female characters than they provided.

Hero System is still my preferred game, but it's hard to find a group that can handle the complexity without the system becoming the subject of the game instead of the story.

@DKS How detailed do you usually draw them?

 

Pencil sketches, about 5 minutes each (maybe 10 minutes for Large creatures). I can scan one and post it here if you're curious.

Printing the art to make your own pawns (as you and @haldir mention) sounds like a good option, too.

      My FLGS had a Brain-in-a-Jar, 77493, some months back, and of COURSE it came home with me. But then I hit a wall. The brain was enormous, far too large to fit inside a humanoid's head unless they were of giant size. Then, an epiphany! Inspired by this old pulp illustration and Wells's Selenites. 


      I also had an old grab-bag Pickled Punk from Paizo: a wretched, foetal thing in a broken jar. So, discarding the jar component of both minis, I did some minor brain surgery and put together this tripod-borne Martian, inerrant in its calculations, an intellect vast and cool and unsympathetic, its distended cranium overshadowing its feeble frame:

      This came in a Reaper blister with Baron Tervin Blackshield. I could not find them in the reaper store, even under the limited models.
       
      I painted Baron Tervin about a year ago and finally got to Murgmo, who just looks like the nastiest goblin model I have ever seen. Pity there isn't more of him available.

      You all have received a message from a dwarf by the name of Duravor Kreel, a member of the Starfinder Society. In this message he says he has a offer for you that if your task is successful could bring you notoriety with the Society itself. He wants you to meet him on Absalom Station. After you've arrived he'll  show you around the Station, get settled in & help with your membership into the Society. Why he picked you? The dwarf has heard some things about each one of you off the net & knew you'd be perfect for the job. After your arrived, he'll explain the job in more depth. He excited to see everyone.
       
      Now,  where or not, your a native of Absalom Station, you've decided that you needed some time away where it's a vacation or a job you're returning on the shuttle, Okimoro. A non-descriptive shuttle like any other that frequents the docking bays of the Station. In particular, Docking Bay 94 ("what a piece of junk".........) on this day.
       
      Absalom Station
       
      The brightly lit docks of Absalom Station are abuzz with activity as travelers bustle by, preparing to board or disembarking from starships bound to or from any of dozens of worlds. Brash and swaggering star pilots, scurrying ysoki mechanics, and expectant colonists mingle with enigmatic kasatha mystics, hard-faced asteroid miners, imposing vesk mercenaries, and more, creating a microcosm of the abundance and variety of life in the Pact Worlds. New arrivals meet friends, loved ones, or business contacts, and are whisked away into the humming activity of daily life on the vast space station.
       
      Docking Bay 94
       
      Beyond them, ground crews tend to the docked ships, and dockworkers in mechanized cargo lifters load and unload freight and luggage.  A sharp tang of ozone hangs in the air—a byproduct of electrical discharges from the docked ships—but underneath, the station’s atmosphere has a slightly used aroma. The docking bay’s deck plates thrum beneath your feet, though whether it’s from the passage of innumerable feet or the vibrations of the station’s power conduits and air recycling systems is impossible to say.
       
      Taking in your surroundings the bay looks like any other docking bay, a large, worn yellow painted "94" lays on the floor directly in front of everyone (everyone is in the grey "trapezoid"), that steps off the shuttle. A information kiosk in on your left. There are set of giant double doors North of the party & there are 2 passages that to the side of those doors.
       
       Anyone outside the shuttle, give me a Perception Check.
