Ral Partha High Bulp & Bupu

Well, it didn't take long to fall behind in the mini-a-week resolution, but the time spent at the paint table hasn't quite been up to where I'd like it to be lately, either.

Working on finishing out this pair gets me a caught up by a couple, anyhow.

While Sanael's been painting up the Dragonlance PC's for our campaign, I've been working on the major NPCs. Unfortunately, the ones I finished up last year don't really count toward that mini-a-week pledge for 2013....

Without further ado, here are the major gully dwarves the party will be meeting sometime in the next few weeks. These are the official Ral Partha models, and man--they are TINY.

Bupu:

I find the rat in the sculpt a nice touch!

The Highbulp:

I had fun experimenting with adding grunge to his clothing. Weathering clothing is new territory for me, so here's where I am with a first try at it:

And a penny shot for scale!

Thanks for checking them out - C&C welcome!

Bupu is one of my favorite side-characters in the Dragonlance novels and you did a great job of making her look as silly and endearing as I remember! Now my girlfriend wants me to get my hands on one so I can paint it up for her

Great job!

Bupu is one of my favorite side-characters in the Dragonlance novels

I always wondered where these two were from. I kept seeing them for sale, never knew.

Actually, to be fully honest, I never looked at the miniatures themselves until now. Always sort of assumed they were some sort of toad people, like a frog King and Queen.

They are actually called gully dwarves. They are incredibly stupid scavengers who have no sense of hygiene, barely speak common, exalt cowardice and grovelling as art/virtue, and they are only capable of counting to two, where two means "any number more than 1".

Basically, they are the closest things to dwarf-goblin hybrids I've ever seen.

That's a horrible thought. Let me tell you that there's no way a fine, upstanding, very attractive goblin would ever hook up with a rotten, ugly, uncivilized dwarf. The very notion is like twelve different kinds of wrong.

I . . . I think I'm gonna be sick . . .

Thanks, all, for the lovely comments (as well as the amusing sidebar about gully dwarves) - nice to see some fellow DL fans chime in here, too. Bupu was always one of my favorite characters, too! I'm really enjoying the process of painting up some favorite characters.

All of the Dragonlance references make me want to bust out the set I have and try to paint them. I have a damaged set of the Ral Partha DL heroes coated in enamel I compared them to the newer reaper models and put them back in the box for another day. Scale creep and 80s looks just didn't inspire enough gumption for me to mess with them.
