Bones question

Recommended Posts

Let's examine the scantily clad and/or topless females in Bones. (I am going to ignore Pathfinder, since the art for those was developed by another company and thus not our stylistic choice)

  1. Medusa. Breasts exposed not because she is sexualized, but because that is how she is depicted in mythology.
  2. Harpy. Breasts exposed not because she is sexualized, but because that is how she is depicted in mythology.
  3. Succubus. Sexuality is a part of the definition of a succubus.
  4. Vandorendra. Breasts exposed not because she is sexualized, but because that is how she is depicted in mythology. A combination of traditional demon, medusoid, and Hindi characteristics, all of which are frequently exposed.
  5. Ghostly Summons. Fully nude, but not overtly sexualized.

Now the clothed ones.

  1. Cassie, female Gnome
  2. Callie, rogue with bow
  3. Deladrin, female assassin
  4. Devonna, mage
  5. Janan, Dragonslayer
  6. Aina, Valkyrie
  7. Juliette, Wizard
  8. Deenah, Barbarian
  9. Aviriel, paladin
  10. Autumn, Wizard
  11. Sharess, Witch-queen
  12. Tiviel, Hellborn Rogue
  13. Sinessa, Hellborn sorceress
  14. Tierdeliera, Dark Elf
  15. Female NOVA trooper
  16. Sarah Blitzer, IMEF
  17. Berkely, Zombie Hunter
  18. Bonnie, Anime heroine
  19. Finaela, Pirate
  20. Mariel, Pirate
  21. Yephima, Cloud Giant
  22. Freya, Dwarf warrior
  23. Bailey, Dwarf rogue
  24. Lysette, Mage
  25. Isabeau, Paladin
  26. Astrid, Bard
  27. Finari Paladin
  28. Grandmother
  29. barmaid
  30. strumpet
  31. townsfolk mother
  32. Banshee
  33. Nienne, Ranger
  34. Female Fighter whose name escapes me....
  35. Sascha DuBois
  36. Ellen Stone
  37. Rosie, Chronotechnician
  38. Dita, Witch

out of that entire list, only Yephima was ever complained about as being too sexualized. Only Tiviel, Sascha, and Sinessa are exposing midriff, although the strumpet and Mariel are showing a lot of leg.

We worked very hard to make sure that nudity was used only where appropriate, and that sexuality was not a sales point, only quality of sculpt and desirability of the overall model.

I am sorry if anyone is offended, but please understand that everyone's opinion of where the line is to be drawn is different.

I love Yephima (I didn't realize until just now that that was her name...). To me her pose suggests a certain kookiness, not her trying to be sexy or w/e. Maybe it's because I'm going to put a huge awesome witch hat on her... Anyway, as you said, everyone's opinion is different, but one of the things I really love about Reaper's minis is that the ladies can be beautiful and sexy while being fully dressed. Reaper keeps the gratuitous stuff to a minimum, while keeping things fun (like the exotic alien dancers in Chronoscope).

And as has been pointed out, Reaper has plenty of scantily clad males as well. So all in all, I think it works out pretty equal ::):

I know many people may not appreciate the amount of flesh on display. One possible way to approach this however, is from the standpoint of a convertaholic. If she's (he's) topless and you don't want that, sculpt some amour. If her (his) midriff is exposed and you don't want it give a hauberk that goes to the knees. I'd rather have a bare mini to start with for a conversion than one that's all bulked up with a ton of gear/equipment/clothing, since that's just less that I have to try and remove. Just a thought for all of you. I personally don't have an issue with nudity in the forms that are presented in the miniature world (though I have seen some pretty dark, and disturbing minis recently). Reaper has always struck me as a very family friendly organization, and their minis are done in pretty good taste.

If you made an incubus model looking sexy with dangley bits dangling, I would buy him. I think it would be great fun on the gaming table. "Do you really want to hit him with a touch attack?"

In the wise words of Red Green "Growing old is mandatory, maturing is optional." As ReaperBryan has pointed out, the nudity is done within theme, and in a mature manner. People well within their rights to be more puritan about their collections, but moaning that the models exist at all is an excessive extension of one's preferences upon others. That's the sort of intolerance shown by fanatics IMO, and that is not good for society.

If a sexy looking male character (with dangly bits) was made I'd buy it... if only to symbolize the bard in our current campaign who manages to find it hard to escape beds.... its tough being charismatic...

I haven't really seen anyone express feelings of offense.

^ This.

Slendertroll made some perfectly valid points, and did specifically say Reaper isn't a gratuitously cheesecakey company. My back and forth with ST was more to seek a refinement and clarification of the points presented, as well as possibly explain where some of these fantasy elements originated from. It was certainly not intended to be any kind of adversarial disagreement.

What fantasy is is different for everybody. I don't like half dragons, for example. Somebody else might prefer a LOTR-esque world and extricate bits that don't match. Still others like semi-historical games based on Greco-Roman myth.

To the extent of over-cheesecaking, like you see in comic books, I completely agree with Slendertroll - but I disagree that it's an issue of any note in our fantasy/miniature hobby because it's statistically insignificant. That's the point I'm driving at.

Agreed. Note that some of the Hawkeye initiative loses sight of the fact that it's not just about a woman in a power pose that would look funny on a man. Women and men stand and walk slightly differently. A woman dominating in an argument may stand hipshot with one hand on hip, hand partly turned up, and not look really really stupid. Try doing that as a man.

In comic books it is routine for female characters to strike a pose that is purely cheesecake, or traced from a porno in some infamous examples, when doing so makes zero sense. Like in a fight or performing feats of athleticism. Now, women do use body language to communicate sexual and .... uh, quasi-sexual intent, queries, tones and inflections. So do men. You better believe that when there's a woman in the room (opposed to being in a paddock literally miles from the nearest non-male) I stand straighter, pay attention to core muscles in posture*, make better eye contact, and so on. And there are times when a woman or man is outright showing off status or physical attractiveness and it is perfectly appropriate to portray that, if it makes sense. There are times when an outrageously seductive, flirtatious or show-off pose is exactly what a person might be doing, and have reason to be doing, at that time.

*suck my expanding guts in and wish I'd done more situps and less online blabbering, if I'm honest.

Things got pretty silly in those. As if the future of the human race hinged on a single pair of plastic hips.

My name is Klaatu, and I have come to your planet to warn of a grave and incomprehensible danger to your world if you do not change your ways and resculpt the cloud giantess.

I think this is a great discussion. As a female gamer I have no problem with anything that's been said here in defense of the nudity or partial nudity. I agree completely with the reasoning for the ones with some (or all) naughty bits showing, as they are appropriate for the figure. Even if I didn't agree, let's face it, I could just avoid the nudes and buy any one of a couple thousand other figs on the market. Reaper has plenty of females with no skin showing.

My participation in the Bombshell minis had to be limited, so I chose 4 figs. Two are covered up, two have a good bit of skin showing. I simply couldn't resist the Sword Maiden, and told my husband that if she could wear a bra made of wire and still look like she could kick the stuffing out of Conan, I had to have her.

Regarding the comments about how females who can't handle the collection of cheesecake not being wanted as part of a gaming group, I tend to agree. They are generally the sort who are going to get offended at nothing on a fairly regular basis, and I don't want to game with them either. In truth, if a set of 25(ish) mm breasts are threatening to my femininity, then maybe I have a wee problem with insecurity. That said, I feel the same about overly serious male players, so it's more to do with me not liking to hang out with people who seem to enjoy getting intensely offended over small things (pun intended)

Hope this link works. I ran across it through the Bombshell Mini's FB page.

I haven't really seen anyone express feelings of offense.

Not in this thread, no. I could find in the KS comments and in the KS Discussion thread here quite a storm, however.
I see what you did there! There was a cumulus of turbulence.

It was a giant problem, when stripped down to its bones.

But in the end the issue was cloudier than anticipated.
