The Great Unpainted Masses

Ugh... facing my dread enemy - The Great Unpainted Masses....

My New Year's Resolution for this year was that I was going to paint and keep at least one miniature a week.

Last year I painted over three hundred figures, mostly zombies, and kept only a dozen, also mostly zombies.

The year before was much the same, only with fewer zombies.

In the meantime my unpainted masses had continued to grow....

So, I am making a dent in the pile - while I am aiming at one per week I am actually averaging two - at least if I count terrain as well as miniatures.

Then I set myself back by giving one away and selling another.

Discovered problems in the two that I had picked out to paint this week - one missing part (and an unsealed blister) and one miscasting (why I would rather buy in a store, but there are no stores close by, anymore).

So, instead of Chained Succubus and Dorly Luckrock I am painting Sophie (Bourbon Street) and Sophie (Pirate).

Both are figures that I have painted before - as were Chained Succubus and Dorly. One was used as a prize in a tournament, two were part of a commission, and Dorly is a PC for a game set in the 1750s.

But because of the backlog on my own miniatures it took me over a year to notice the problems.

So, what are your heartbreaking tales of unpainted hordes?

In 1992, I was working for Matthews-Simmons Marketing. Part of the job was importing Folio Works miniatures. The company had little money, so I took part of my pay in miniatures at distributor prices. I still have six or so cases of those miniatures. Not counting those or figures that belong to more well-defined groups, I have about one and a half bankers' boxes of "Human Fighters" alone.

I can't fit my unpainted figures on a 6' high, 4' wide, and 18" deep steel shelving unit.

I'm seriously considering going in on the Gnome Adventurers kickstarter at the Completionist level.

I miss Folio Works - their dwarfs (Bob Olley's work, I think) and their large orcs, but most especially their ogres (also, I think, by Bob Olley)....

Fantasy Warlord was a game that looked good, but that I never had a chance to play.

I seemed to have misplaced 2 sprue's worth of Ogre Kingdoms bulls that I bought way back when GW would sell individual sprues. They might be stashed in a box somewhere and I've just forgotten where. Even worse though is a Rackham Kelt Fury Warrior I started in 2010-- best pose of the blister pack... gone. Don't know where either. sniff He will never be forgotten. sniff sniff

I agree about the ogres. Lots of character and well sculpted. I have quite a few, though sadly only one Ogre Necromancer. (Those sold quickly.)

Fantasy Warlord is probably to the taste of most people who like Warhammer Fantasy. Sadly, that wouldn't be me. I'll keep the rules for completeness and nostalgia, but I doubt that I'll play.

The ogre necromancers sold before some stores could even get them - the local store back then (Gamescapes) had them on order from Chessex (remember them) but they were gone before the order was processed,

I had the same thing happen with the tag end of Inferno by Global.

The Auld Grump *EDIT* there was some cardstock terrain for the game as well, some of those are on sale as PDFs these days - Fantasy Cutouts.

Hmm. I'm a little embarrassed of the 1500+ GW goblins that are awaiting paint (some are still awaiting stripper). I traded online for most of those (my wife would have killed me if I paid EE prices). so some are primed or badly painted, hence the need for stripper.

Crap. That reminds me, I have 50 of those little dudes in a paint bucket of brake fluid. I wonder if they've melted after 6(? more?) months in there.... Guess I'll check when I get home.

I would be interested in seeing pictures of everyone's unpainted hordes. ::):

I would be scared to try and bring everything together in a single location for that kind of picture. There is potential for serious structural damage to my house and that includes the basement.

Luckily you did not pay EE rates for this batch... <_<

I want to know how this example of mad science experiment turned out. Does brake fluid evaporate? Pictures please.

No befores, but I'll get some pics when I extract them. Even if it's a sodden glob.
