Bones Gnoll Warrior (77012) converted from flail to spear

Recommended Posts

I bought an extra Bones gnoll warrior with flail to convert to carrying a spear instead.  Pretty simple conversion, I just cut the flail off above and below the paw and drilled through where the remaining haft was gripped in his hand being careful not to damage the fingers.  Then I took a length of Evergreen brand plastic rod and forced it through the resulting hole.  It gripped it so well that I probably could get away without gluing it at all but I did put a small drop of CA glue just to be sure.  Then I drilled a hole in the tip of the pole.  Next I dug up a piece of spikey frippery intended for a 40k Chaos Rhino and cut one of the spikes off.  Then I drilled a hole in its base.  I glued a pin made from a paper clip in the hole on the end of the pole and then glued the spike on the pin as a spear tip.  This spear is pretty chunky but since the Bones gnolls are a bit larger than the gnolls I already own I am planning to use them as Fiendish gnolls to lead the others so I think it appropriate that he's carrying a massive skewering spear.  At any rate, I'm pleased with the conversion and it took all of 15 minutes, including digging around looking for something to use for a spear tip.  This conversion was easy enough and turned out well enough that I'm sorely tempted to pick up 3 or 4 more flail gnolls for conversion to spear carriers.

On a side note, I only took pics of the finished product because I had a devil of a time getting the Bones material to show up with detail rather than as a white blob.  The pics I finally settled on are still pretty crappy but at least you can see what's going on with the conversion.  Ironically, I screwed around trying to get pics to post longer than it took to do the conversion.

Great work! I love seeing well converted pieces and can't wait to do some of my own.

Yeah... I had this same problem with the werewolf I re-based earlier. I'm going to try making a light box soon to see if it helps, but probably not. It also doesn't help that I'm just using the camera built in to my phone...

VERY NICELY DONE conversion! Plastic minis lend themselves WONDERFULLY to personalizing...all those lovely Reaper Weapons Packs will come in really handy. OH THE POSSIBILITIES!

I look forward to seeing the Big Guy all painted up.

The only way I found to get detail to show was to have no direct light on the figure with a non-white background. Of course I also don't know diddly about taking pictures other than aim and shoot and like you I'm using my phone camera so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone!

So when I unpacked this Big Boi in 2017  I thought he would look really cool without wings.  but I'm it will be a lot of careful work to carve off the joins and resculpt him,  I just don't think I'm ready.  In February I did the scales for my verocthulu conversion, and thought "I could have done that better."
      So this is better.

This Dragon will be the colors or earth.   Burnt Umber base, and a hide scattered with Burnt Sienna, Tusk Ivory, and Leather Brown with ochre and NNM gold colors on the belly.
perhaps some cool gray or blue washes in the shadows.   The scales will be individually shaded, and the hide below staying the color of brown liner, or umber in the well lit areas.

So far its been about 4 hrs of work in sculpting, cleaning, gluing and mold line removal.
it took 45 min just to cover him in brown liner.  He is a really big dragon, and I have no idea how long this is going to take.

but im getting a little obesessed - I don't want to schedule a meeting or go grocery shopping, I want to add more paint...
this feels like how I ended up with a dragon named Insomnia - who was painted almost entirely between 10pm and 7 am.   I kept waking up with new color ideas.
Or the DDS2 dragon who I spent 2-4 hours a day painting for a solid week, and another hour a night for the week after.

The last picture is my inspiration for the scale colors - the eyes will be much simpler than this.

Good day everyone, I will share here my progression on a project I wish to do for a long time. I already know all the parts I'll be using for this diorama. Starting with the carefree 03082 Ingrid sculpted by Derek Schubert (I'm converting her as a svirfneblin prospector), accompanied by her faithful familiar the 14453 hunting cat sculpted by Sandra Garrity. They are taken as prey by a 03602 stone lurker sculpted by Kevin Williams. I will also add a 02018 bat from the familiar pack 1 hanging somewhere on the rock wall. I already worked on Ingrid. I removed the base and give her a pickaxe. I made her tool with a paperclip and a piece of scrap metal. This all-project idea started with the gemstone she’s holding in her left hand.

Here she is - she is an NPC in my campaign... friend or foe? Tried a darker skin but not sure I quite got it. Well, I was pleased even if her eyebrows are a bit odd.

Alright.  So I want to share some old skeletons with you to both show off some of my older paintjobs, and to reflect on my growth over the past two and a half years.  An what better way to show off my growth in Bones, than with bones?

      More Below Spoiler:

I am not a fan of repainting old models or painting another copy of something I've already painted.  I have so many minis in my collection that I'd rather keep moving forward.
That said, I love painting similar things.  It's a great opportunity to reflect on your past projects and to compare where you started to where you've come.

I'd love to see some before and after photos of some of your works!

For the RCL Zodiac Challenge  - the Taurus not one of the more creative choices like Libra or Aquarius.
It is my Adopted Star sign because if Horoscopes are at all useful it is when they make guesses at problems or opportunities based on the personality connected to the sign.
by personality I fit  like 3 of 4  tendencies, and 0 of 4 of my birth sign.

knocked this guy out in a few hours this morning.
