Gaming themed restaurant/bar. Any Exist? Is this even a good idea?

Recommended Posts

My baby took me to Enchanted Grounds back in mid-March; she was hunting for gaming pits around Denver, and it turned up in her search. It was a fine little gaming emporium with a neat little coffee shop attached. It SEEMED like a fine thing, but I can't help but wonder how successful the coffee end of the business is. Gamers tend to monopolize a table for a GOOD long time, and I tend to think this would just be unprofitable for any outfit looking to make money from the food and drink.

This was the problem with a place that opened in San Marcos, years ago; they wanted to be part game emporium, part tavern, and while their decor was excellent and their hearts were in the right place, the place couldn't stay afloat financially. Then again, San Marcos has killed a variety of game and comic shops over the years, so perhaps they just aren't big enough to manage one.

People studying also monopolize tables for a good long time, and I have seen more than my share who use the table for 8-10 hours, and never buy a thing. While with a table of gamers you have a chance of at least one of them ordering multiple items.

Thanks again for all the suggestions guys, good to hear this business model can work out when done well. I appreciate all the input! It's certainly going to take me a good long while to get the ball rolling (curses for having a full time job and still being poor!) but now I've got a good starting point seeing how others have done it.

AFK Tavern in Everett, WA. Nice idea, but service borders on terrible.

Best to make it self serve, as no waitress will want to serve a table for hours with the probable outcome of receiving no tip, or very little for the time served.
