My Reaper BONES kickstarter has arrived!

Recommended Posts

I am missing the female Gnome Wizard. I have been waiting for her to appear out of nowhere to no avail. I have one miscast skeleton and my fire giant bodyguard seemed to be missing something, but he was the last I checked and I was falling asleep...

Considering I had Vamp x 2 and 31 extras, that is really very good!

Oh, and I was missing the extra Haunts. (Because I forgot to order them!)

Heh, to make it worse - my girlfriend's Vampire box was perfect!

It made me so optimistic....

I finished painting three Bones dragons for commissions today - I did not expect the light weight of the models to make a big difference, but it made ot a whole lot easier to hold, even when I held the models at weird angles. Primed them on Saturday, let them sit through Sunday, painted them on Monday and Tuesday.

Next up, Nethyrmaul....

The Auld Grump - these are models for play, not display....

Question, should I wait until they finish the delivery of Kickstarter items before contacting or just contact as soon as possible? I am almost done with inventorying my items and there are a few miniatures missing some pieces. :)

TL;DR - See last.

Attempt #3... sigh.

Firstly, I have not read through this entire thread. I did, however, read many posts here and there including the first and current page. So forgive me if I ask any questions that might have been answered or note something that was interesting to me that have been mentioned a number of times before. If I had a real good opportunity to go through the forums and the thread here, then I would, but as it is, I have to pick and choose what seems noteworthy and quickly check it and move on. I hate doing that and I want to take my time, but it's either that or not read anything when I swing by once every couple of weeks or whatever it is that I am averaging. Please don't lynch me, fellow... er... Boners?

Anyway, there seems to be a lot of hits and misses with the KS Bones. Is that the norm for most of us or is it just because I am reading from this conversation thread? Personally, I dig Reaper and their products and the recent Bones miniatures I've received but there are issues (which I'm sure can be easily resolved through replacements).

I'm still going through mine even though the Bones package arrived almost a week ago. Not because I ordered one of everything or twenty-two Vampire Boxes but just due to time-constraints. I really want to finish going through the inventory process sooner rather than later. Thank goodness that I printed out that KS image (noting adjustments from the KS Updates) and have a system with notes and bags and whatnot or it'd really be a chore to check everything off. Heh, I'm in the process of putting bagged miniatures into other bags because I haven't taken them out of their bags except for a very few.

So far, of the two Vampire boxes I've received, one had far less errors than the other. That one I gave to a friend because I am a cool bro (and since it was the first one checked). It is missing one of the Pathfinder Goblin spruces (#89003 PF Warrior Gobbies) but did have a duplicate of 89002 which was also given to the friend. Getting 89003 for him would be nice but not necessary since he's still happy with the count on that front. 77058, Paladin Almaran the Gold is missing the shield arm and accompanying shield. Thus, the count was right due to the earlier duplicate.

Missing limbs (and poorly put together models) seems to be a common issue with Bones that I've seen or bought at brick-and-mortar stores. Most of them are fine so don't be afraid to buy them! =Winks=

The second Vampire, which I am still moving through, has many, many more issues than the first one. Everything from missing or incomplete miniatures to damaged and dirty ones. Of course I'll eventually shoot Reaper an e-mail for missing, incomplete, or damaged miniatures (that I cannot repair). Many of these have odd melting or burnt patterns to them. I suspect that for several of the miniatures they were unfortunately used to snub out a cigarette. I kid you not. On the other hand, I don't know if these boxes were originally packed by hand or machine so it could be anything. Yet, that's not the kicker.

The most surprising thing I found so far in this box was a black Yephima, the female Cloud/Storm Giantess. I thought to myself "Well, that's interesting. But that can't be right." especially since the first one from the other box came out in the expected white like the rest of the line (excluding the Fire and Haunt minis). I tried to rub a bit to see if it's something coating it but didn't notice anything different. So I took Yephima out and then noted the residue left on my fingers. It was some kind of grease or something. I rinsed the model and it cleared up just fine as far as I can tell. Thankfully that black coating came off fairly easily with water and a bit of light scrubbing without marring or staining the model.

Other models had what looked like dirt on them, but that happened only a few times and only with this current box. Though, I haven't scrutinized the non-Vampire models that did show up yet for damage, dirt, or missing/incomplete pieces. Anyone else run into anything like Yephima or suspiciously melted miniatures (i.e., outside of obvious casting errors)?

Outside of the Vampire boxes, I am missing several miniatures from the Add-On list. I opened one of the Kaladrax boxes and quickly put him together. The wings and a leg are funky, but I figure once I boil it then it should be alright... IF, I do that, that is. Even now, it looks pretty good behind the glass cabinet towering over other (and the few) non-Bones miniatures that I have. That model does encompass quite the range in how tough the Bones are. Everything from SUPER soft where you just *barely* touch the model and it just gives to incredibly hard where you could drop it (gasp!) without anyone being the wiser.

That's another thing. Is that common? I've noticed that many miniatures are very soft and flexible to others being very tough and inflexible.

Well, I think I've talked your ear off enough so I'll take off. +1 Brownie Point if you read it all... and sorry for the wall of text. Sometimes I just get into a mode... ^^' Cheers everyone and be good.

For the others...

TL:DR - Have there been a LOT of issues with the Bones Vampire Boxes? How tough are your Bones miniatures? Did you get "spongy" minis or tough ones? The post also talked a bit about the topic and about having acquired an ebony Yephima, the female Cloud/Storm Giantess, and smoking. Have a good one.

It sounds like most of your problems have cropped up here and there. Even with a high accuracy, there are bound to be a number of mistakes- and many of them will be mentioned here, since people are obviously less likely to bring up the fact that there was *no* problem with their order (although there's been more of that than I would have expected, heh).

The black-stained figure is a bit of a surprise to me. My best guess is that it's a dirty mold-release agent? Glad it cleaned off, but too bad you had to. I had a little schmutz on a couple of mine that could be a bit of the same thing.

I think most of what you describe would have occurred in China, rather than at Reaper. I can imagine a scenario in which they ran the machine for a long time until models started coming out rough, then gave it a break, cleaned it up, and restarted it- and you got your order at the tail end of one of those shifts. Who knows.

The soft, flexible quality of some of the models has been discussed heavily here. I won't repeat it, but to say that the consensus seems to be that 1) this is definitely intentional, as it allows certain models to be removed more easily from the mold, and 2) it is unlikely to be a problem for most painters, although we're waiting to see if anyone chimes in with a complain after actually trying to paint them.

Anyway, make a list of your errors, and email Reaper later this week and no doubt they will replace what is in error.

Wow, there have been a few errors here and there, but if there were a prize for worst vampire box, it sounds like you just won it. I've read about missing or miscast minis, but yours is the first I've heard of with dirty or burned minis. The soft/hard material has been discussed a few places, it seems some pieces needed to be softer due to their mold shapes. If you have some that are particularly soft, it'd probably be a good idea to post which ones so others can compare and you will know if you have defective or just soft minis. The heads of Kaladrax and Cthulhu are a couple of the softest pieces, so if you have any softer than them you might have defects.

Finally finished the inventory. Only defect was the one dude with no arms. All items accounted for, I'm pretty amazed, given how many things I got.

Jasung:

That's awful to hear. There's been reports of 2-5% accuracy issues [miscasts, an extra leg but missing an arm, etc], and your story makes me very glad Reaper was able to raise enough funds with the KS to start doing at least some of the production in-house...their in-house QA is very good.

The goo on the Yephima sounds like mold release; normally there's not nearly that much on it, but it's common to have a little and is the reason you should always wash your figures with lukewarm, mildly soapy water and an old soft toothbrush before priming / painting. Once they're washed, try to touch them with bare skin as little as possible [some glue toothpicks to them, others touch parts that aren't going to be painted, some wear gloves, etc]; skin oil can also make the paint not stick.

The varying hardness is normal for Bones; IIRC, the amount of recycled material and the amount of plasticizer in a given batch both go into determining the stiffness of a formulation, while the likelihood of breaking a small intricate piece removing it from the mold [ala Cthulhu's face-tentacles] and the number of small details on the piece factors into which formulation [stiff, soft, somewhere in the middle] to use. Variances are normal, but I've not seen it to this degree before...though that could be the massive change in scope. Bones didn't have giant dragons and the like before this. For how far the variance can go: I'm afraid Wyrmgear's wings will shatter if I drop them, and Kally's head's soft enough that when I was showing it to one of the guys, we had an 'easily amused' moment making it chew on a smaller figure. OM NOM NOM!

The dark marks that aren't mold release...I've never worked with plastics production [only wood, but you could burn the crap out of that if your tools were dull, spinning too fast, or moving too slow], but if I had to guess something was way too hot when the pieces...or the liquid material...came through. Combine that with loads of mold release, I'm wondering if your batch wasn't done by a new employee being trained...or just done being trained...at the time.

I have no doubts they'll make it right...but from previous forum posts the 'miscast repairs' stuff is going into a backlog for once fulfillment is completely done. Send it in, be polite, be patient. They'll do right by you...treating a niche market as customers instead of consumers is how they've stayed in business this long.

My inventory came up with 2 missing figures in the vampire set and the head missing of one of the forces of nature.

Figure I am going to let Reaper finish all the shipping then will email them. No need to bother now. And I would like to combine it with an order if possible in order to save them on some shipping as it would be more than $25 and they could just throw the missing items in the shipment.

just finished going thru it all. No noticible miscasts and no missing pieces that I can tell.

I ended up with an extra bag of 4 Nova guys tho..thx!

I'm exhausted! hehe

I finished my inventory, nothing missing from my order. Some light "glue" issues (it came apart) and the standard bendiness to the more "solid" figures, which I'll fix with some hot water. Possible face issues with a couple of figures, but I think it's manageable. I'll be running primer over the ones I see plainly to make sure of that, but I don't believe this to be a problem.

Other than that, the bent wings & such that are a factor of the product, so I'm not worried about those at all (hot water & ice baths are coming soon!).

Yes, thanks for the XL spreadsheet, with bags listed, as it made doing the inventory much easier.

In 4 vampires, I have one omission and no mistcasts (well, besides the mold error on the nose of the cowgirl).

I have the correct number of add-ons but haven't' checked them for miscast or missing pieces yet.

If the above missing wizard is the only thing wrong with my pledge, I am not even going to bother Reaper for a replacement.

I'm missing 2 figures I didn't really like and one limb on a warrior who was probably going to have it chopped off anyway.

Not bad.
