Bones: The First Coat is the Difference

I don't know if Army Painter has changed their ingredients or something, but when I tried priming bones with it earlier this year they got very tacky. It took a few days for the tackiness to reveal itself, though.

 

Another thing I've noted is that if I use Citadel's Wraithbone primer on Bones Black, it adheres fine but it doesn't seem to give a primed surface. If I try painting on it, it's just as hydrophobic as the Bones Black material itself (or close enough to not matter). This is unfortunate if you try to paint them using contrast paints.

 

It would be really awesome if Reaper could whip up some form of guaranteed Bones-friendly spray-on primer. At the moment, all we have is basically unconfirmed lore - "I heard this lady tried that spray and it worked fine", and unfortunately not very much in the way of actual knowledge.

I had some bones so that super tacky fell after priming with AP, too. I haven't been able to get results on painting the minis after washing like they prescribe. I order having that first coat on there.  Didn't notice issues with bones black, just bones on the AP primer.

I've used Armory primer on mine with a lot of success, but several people think it is just relabeled Krylon self etching primer..

I painted this little guy soon after priming and it wasn't an issue (pirate).

 

The paint and all had no issue and i didn't notice a tacky feeling against the brush. However, i should note i didn't physically touch the model with primer one i started painting.  

 

On the flip side i got two of those kelpies abs painted one, no prob. But the other i didn't paint that was primed the same time did eventually get tacky.  I have been reluctant to paint it with that much sticky feel on it. 

 

If you're painting within the day you primed, no issue. If you're waiting....well, i may try it, but low expectations.

Rustoleum automotive wet-sandable light gray spray primer works great even on the older white Bones material.

 

The Krylon ultra flat camo color black is quite good too, but may stay a bit tacky on the white Bones.  You can hit it with a coat of Rustoleum Frosted Glass or Testors Dullcote to eliminate that tackiness.  

 

I just tried the Rustoleum Frosted glass alone as a "primer" of sorts on a new set of white Bones.  I will report back with results.

 

The Rustoleum Frosted Glass spray has become my go-to sealer.  It's insanely matte, which is usually a good thing, but it will dull the heck out of your metallics sometimes giving it a non-metallic metal look.  That is my only complaint.  It's just too darn matte.

Oil paints seem to be rising in popularity lately, has anyone tried them on Bones straight out of the package?

I know many of us use Brown Liner.

 

Recently I used Vallejo Surface Primer -70.614 - Israeli Sands / Grey.61-73.

Undiluted, works like a charm for both Bones and Resin and Metal.

With airbrush or brush? I’m looking at trying to use oils like Wappel does, base coat and wipe most off.
So I’m hoping either airbrushing Stynylrez primer then oil or first coat of oil paint straight on unprepared Bones works.

I use a brush, don't own an airbrush,

I can confirm that Vallejo Surface Primer -70.614 - Israeli Sands works well with Bones USA, Bones classic, 3Dprinter water washable resin, metal, resin, PVC in general and HIPS plastic. all through an airbrush. (and after the models are washed to get the mould grease off)

The same goes for vallejo surface primer black

Trying oils in this days both on primed and "raw" bones. After 24 hours they are still wet... I'll update tomorrow.
Oil washes worked fine on primed bones.

Oils take a long time to dry, even longer if the humidity is higher.. Wappel says it can take a week

 

There's been some discussion on one of the Discords I am on about comparing how different primers work on different types of Bones going back to Bones 1/original and forward.. which might be something I'll make time to do soon

Well, usually they dries out in one day in my experience, but it's raining hard in here, maybe it is too humid.
Anyway, after 4 days, still wet (very wet like as it was recently painted). Also I've put the paint in a piece of cardboard before starting to paint, to drain most of the oil out of it, so, I don't know, I find it odd that it's still wet...
