Thanks everyone, I'm so happy you like my paint set-up and racks ::D:

You have a finer rack than I.

Now to work on the Arc light from the tutorial.  My problem is that my paint area is not static.  So I need to figure out how I can make the Arc light setup so I can move it.  Kinda needs to be independent of the painting table I just happen to be working on at that moment.

I'll worry about the Arch light after we build our home in a few years and I have an actual paint studio with a gaming area for our D&D games. Arc light is really cool tho, I've seen quite a few people building them. My two lamps put out a lot of light and I'm happy with them for now. ::D:

It's more what to mount the end of each arc on.  In the tutorial it's a permanent painting table.  So it is just mounted to the table at each end.  I need something that makes it portable.  So something that can hold up the arch but let me pick it up and move it when done.

The other factor is I can see my wife wanting one once she sees it or using mine for her cookie decorating when she needs light.  It would be perfect for her also.

I thought something as simple as a 2x4 at each end.  Not sure if they would be heavy enough to do it.  I could always hollow out some of the wood and put some lead in it to weight it down more.  Or find something heavier to use as the base to attach the wood to or replace it.

The nice thing about the 2 cross arch structure is that it is pretty self supporting.  You could take a 24" x 36" drafting board and build it on top of that. Now you have a semi-portable light arch setup.  Or you could use a crossbar on the left and right side that are attached to a fabric mat. That would be even more portable.

Well I only got about halfway through here before falling over in awe of all these amazing paint areas!!

My new lamp should be in this afternoon, and I rearranged my desk so my better half can paint next to me when he feels like joining ^_^ I'll take a picture once I've added the lamp!

Okay, finally took a photo! I ended up moving everything around a third time - I'm more likely to be painting on my own, so it's just easier to keep stuff together.

I've got my inspiration wall. I'm slowly filling it up with things I love, like quotes from forum members, my puppies from when I was kid, and my ArtistCon badge. I need to put a photo of my better half and me up there ^_^ I'm also getting a second Izzy book so I can cut a few pages out to use as mini posters.

In the back corner: I've got sharp pointy things in one jar, and brushes in the other. Then my paint, of course. You can tell by the colored tips that I haven't used very many yet! I made my racks out of cheap foamboard - I went all engineer on them, they are quite sturdy. The raised lip that I put on them to prevent tipping wasn't as high as they should have been after I put the padding down, but they are (hopefully) out of the way enough in this corner that they won't get knocked over.

I've found it handy to keep a little notepad with what colors I'm using, so I have that. To the left of the amazing lamp (thanks, Bathory!), the little red box has all the little supplies in it - ticky tack, empty med bottles, etc. It was made for me by my father-in-law!

Underneath my desk, I have a big cardboard box of newspaper ads that I use for covering surfaces and another, smaller box with all my minis in it. Most are in little baggies at the moment, I wish I had kept the labels  I also have a few shoebox sized plastic containers under there - one each for sculpting materials, bases, and mini prepping. They're all nearly empty, but I'm just planning ahead!

The desk is about twice the size shown here. The left side is empty - I'll be using that area for drawing and other projects ^_^

It's really cool seeing everyone's workspace. I am in the process of setting up my own, and it's been kind of helpful to see what other people do. I live in a city apartment so I can't do a big dedicated space, but I can learn to pack my stuff up efficiently and take it out when I need it, and arrange it in a logical way for working.

I'm in an apartment too! Random thing I've learned for working in small spaces - keep the little plastic cover of the blister packs that your minis come in! They are awesome as teeny to-go palettes, at least when you're only working with a couple colors at a time.

Nice! I'll have to remember that if I'm ever painting away from home. I do have a pretty nice little porcelain palette I plan on using most of the time though. Only maybe 8 by 5 inches. It has a bunch of wells that hold about 10-12 drops and some flat space for gradient mixing and paint straight from the bottle. I can use the lid as another flat palette too (and I may try sticking a paper towel and parchment paper in there to convert it to a wet palette for longer paints). The big thing is going to be organizing my paints effectively so I can take out a subset and keep the rest in storage, since I won't have table space for big paint racks like you have there. Luckily minis are small, or at least the ones I paint are.

I expect that most of us are painting as a break from busy lives. I’m interested in knowing how much painting time people find, regular or binges, time of day, and if
you’ve had any success in finding more...

Personally, I tend to paint in blocks of several hours on weekend days when I
can, which isn’t that often. I’ve long tracked painting completions (since ‘95 continuously now), but not how often or how long I spent painting. I started a habit tracker this month to see, inspired by my brother who set a goal of 30 minutes a day. So far it’s been an unimpressive 5 of 11 days. At home I do most of the painting between breakfast and lunch, which is often quiet time on the weekends because my SO is able to sleep in and I am not.

My best found time technique is to have a second paint set at work, and paint at lunch if there isn’t a work crisis.

So my hobby space was getting cluttered; I had multiple sizes of paint/hobby bottles. Now, I could buy a pre-made organizer, but what would be the fun in that! Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls - lets step into the workshop and remedy this issue...

Step One: Come up with the battle plan.
This space here needs to be hold an organizer. As you can see, I have larger bottles (Vallejo specials/Daler Rowney Inks), Tamiya Clears, GW pots, and the standard dropper bottle fair.

Step Two: Find some scrap material to work with.
I grabbed a piece of 3/4" Oak plywood I had lying around and took some measurements to see if it was a good candidate.

      Step Three: Get to work!
I tossed in on my cross-cut sled on the tablesaw, marked the line (and always mark your waste/outside cut line to prevent confusion) and cut it down to size.

This humble 2x4 will serve as the sides and shelf frames for the storage unit...

I take it to the jointer to get a flat face and edge and we clean up the other side on the planer and the tablesaw.

Then to the bandsaw to resaw the board. Resawing is cutting a board's thickness in half.

Ta-da! Two halves ready to be used!

Here are a few bottles to take as a means of reference to measure the shelf sizes needed.

Getting a general idea of the shelf layout.

Gluing up and tacking the shelves in place, adding in the trim to the front of the shelves to match the sides...

All glued up and ready for sanding and a final seal coat!

Sanded and a couple coats of Danish Oil later we have our hobby organizer!

Have you constructed something for your hobby battlestations or otherwise? Foam? 3D printed? Welded? Any other DIY'er that have taken the plunge into focusing that into their painting hobby? Super-sized something from IKEA? Let me know!

This is a look at the disaster of what the space currently looks like (you have been warned):

Not pictured is the rather large corner desk, the Detolf shelves on the other side of the room, and the terrain taking up the closet.

Here is the Ikea purchase from today that will help substantially with organization. (Two 3x3 Kallax shelves, three sets of drawers to fill three of the 18 cubes, two 6-drawer Alex drawers, and a countertop to go on top of the drawers)

I may eventually get another 3x3 to stack on one or both of the others, and also may eventually get some doors and/or drawers for the Kallax shelves, but not yet. Ikea is a little over an hour away, so this combined with lunch and dessert was a decent amount of a day trip with the family.

      Wish me luck!

So I wanted to show off my new off. I have been redesigning it lately and am almost done. The only thing left I need is a center piece that I am working on now but As it stands it looks great.

First, here is my old set up:

And here is my new desk. In the interim i have been using the same set up as the old but with the new desk. Now I have it set up the way I want. Hope you guys like it.

If you have any recommendations for wall mounted "Things" please let me know. I'm always interesting in that kind of thing.

The next thing I want to figure out is how to get my laptop off that little table to the right. I was thinking getting a magazine rack or something...
