WIP one full case from the Bones Kickstarter

Recieved april 11th, finished unboxing after only 2 days!

I sorted out all the minis I wanted to painted that would fit in the case.

after about 2 weeks:

 

Here are 2 of my early heroes. I love the scroll, and folds in the robes, but hate the faces.

 

after about a month: koboolds, goblins, 10 adventures are painted. At least a few are on a shelf of shame, waiting fixes

 

Goblins

the goblins seemed very paint friendly, with large eyes, protruding eyeballs, and interesting details,

but something went wrong. advice is welcome.

Ok. I'm not one of the really good painters here, but this is what I think

 

Firstly coverage of the paint looks a little spotty. Are you cleaning the figures before you paint? If not, a clean toothbrush and some soapy water before you start painting is probably a good idea - when we've seen coverage issues in the past it's usually because the figures still have oils and stuff on them from being released from the mold.

 

Secondly it looks like you're painting a base coat and that's about it, which makes for a very flat looking mini. Usually I start by using a 'wash' to add shading to the low points on a figure, and 'dry-brushing' to give highlights. These aren't the only methods but they're the ones I used to progress from where you are now.

 

Without pushing it - Reapers's Learn to Paint Kit 1 deals with those techniques and comes with paints, two metal figures and some brushes. But there's also some tutorials in the Painting Techniques segment of the forums.

I'm no pro, but here's my advice:

a few layers of thinned paint looks better than one thick coat.

after the wash, redo the base color, but leave the shade in the proper areas. Then add a few highlights with a lighter color. Reaper Triads are perfect for this.

as for the faces, don't put so much paint on the brush. don't be afraid to have to re-dip your brush.

On the other hand, good job on gettin' stuff done!

thanks guys, thats helpful. I was hitting a block there with the gobos, now I want to try it again.

I am cleaning the figures first, and the gobos were even primed, as I have been finding it helps me see the details better.

 

ill try the wash on thier clothes, then redo for highlights. I did all those little red Xs with a toothpick, but I think I was too attached to them, I can redo them once the base coloring comes out better.

 

unfortunately SWMBO has a long honeydo list for me this weekend.

But during the week i can frequently find 1-3 hours to work on them.

Goblins are creatures of chaos, something always goes wrong. I like the pathfinder reimagining of goblins, they are fun and terrifying.

you should try some washes of thin black to help make the details pop. i think the problem that you are perceiving is the lack of contrast - recesses need to be dark and high points light to fool the eye in to believing they are bigger than they are.

I imagine when mine gets here I'll just get boneshocked for at least a month before I even lift a brush.

paints 12 vallejo paints 11 craftsmart acrylic (69c each) 3 citadel inks (black, sepia, fleshshade) for washing.

this is after an addtional coat of washes and drybrushing.

 

Next I looked up painted goblins and saw the over painting of the articulation of armguards and leather straps. In other peoples modles there was actually dark stripes painted on the lines in the arm leathers, more than just a wash clinging to the cracks. so made a third pass, thistime painting in the lines with my newest thin brush.

at this I think im done with the goblins. My goal is just to get them table-ready. The changes seem small, but im not embaressed by them anymore. Besides im playing in a Rise of the Runelords Pathfinder game, and so the next time I run a campaign I won't use goblins, because the group will have had thier fill fighing fighting them.

The last tray need extensive cutting because many of the minis that I wanted to paint were too big for a single slot. Nearly a month on, and I have more than 30 painted.

 

two wizards ened up in similar green robes so I thought WTH, ill add an order of green wizards to the next campaign. ill post pict when the third one is finished.

Or more seriously, perhaps have a deity tied to spring, birth, creation, etc and have an order of wizards dedicated to her/him.
