vulture
Hi all, this is my first project on these forums, mostly because i cant be bothered to take proper pics. i'm doing the CSM Tome of Horrors KS right now and I'm really excited for the oddball monsters they are making to do battle with my bones heroes, but i am strapped for cash and i cant contribute much. i got to thinking about how else i could participate, and the froghemoth hit me. he seems like a super fun mini to sculpt, so i decided to give it the old college try. this is not my first sculpting attempt; here are two of my completed minis from years gone by: so, i think i can at least try to give the big frog justice. to do a truly good job, though, ill need your (critical) feedback. thus far i am at the "chubby armature" stage, so there isn't much to it, but i'm moving fast, so well get somewhere interesting soon, i hope. my work so far (ill skip the early steps, unless someone is interested): thoughts? if i am going to change something big, now is the time.
ShadowRaven
thoughts? Good luck with it. That's the bet I can offer.
Caffiene
Looks good! One suggestion (although its hard to tell from the side view) is the mouth is looking a bit less broad than I would expect for a frog. It definitely looks amphibian, but in that shot currently its more salamander than frog because of the head shape, imo. It might look completely frog-like from a front view, though. scorpio616
How big is that barilla lid? Looks the right shape for a D&D froghemoth, only question is how big are you going to make it?
vulture
it's 73mm, so just about perfect for a huge creature (3'x3'). that does make my froggy a bit small (the pathfinder size description would put him at over 5 inches tall). probably could've gone larger, but i didn't want to over do it, and i am hoping the writhing tentacles bulk him out a bit. i'll post a new pic tonight with some progress, a mini for scale, and a different view of the head/mouth. Baugi
Love the idea. That kobold is fantastic btw.. much more dynamic than most I've seen. What sculpting medium are you using here, just out of curiosity?
vulture
the kobold was done traditionally using GS. for bigger creatures such as this guy and the cloaker i typically sculpt the form over an armature using sculpy, then "skin" them with another medium. in this case my plan of attack is: stage 1: wire and foil armature (yes, foil. aluminum foil is a nice way to add bulk to an armature of a big critter, and ends up being very sturdy when folded in to thick sheets) stage 2: bulk out the form. I'm currently using sculpy (transparent). it is soft and a little tacky, so it builds layers well. i add in sheets and bake in between. this is where i am now. stage 3: detailing. i will skin using super sculpy 3. it holds details very well, and the clay gives me as much work time as i need to cover large areas with fine textures. ill start the arms here, because the SSIII is more rigid/durable, and will allow them to hold their shape better while baking and sculpting. stage 4: finishing touches. at this point i will make spot corrections and sculpt difficult and non uniform details (including parts that may be easily breakable as clay) with green stuff epoxy putty. Finch
Looks very promising. Think you made the right choice in keeping the overall size within reason. Love that cloaker.

vulture
hi guys, thanks for the supportive comments but, uh oh! the pressure is on now! i've always been partial to the cloaker, too. maybe ill revisit them at some point. no time to chat now, though, it's time to sculpt. scorpio616
Cloaker's face is reminiscent of a demonic pug. Adorable.
