TSR Rust Monster

This bizarre little guy came in a blister with a Rakshasa. The rakshasa is smaller than the rust monster. The rust monster is an odd sculpt, but adorable in his own way, and he was a fun, quick paint-up...the Rakshasa may be destined for a melt bucket, he's so bad.

 

Anyway, from the depths of the 80's, from the dark days of lead (see, it's a pun, because lead is darker than tin...oh, never mind), I give you, RUST MONSTER! Bane of adventurers, eater of weapons and armor.

 

About two hours, maybe three, to paint him.

 

The rust effect on his shield is stolen whole cloth from Jabberwocky, whose tutorial on the subject can be found, with some search-fu, in these very forums, but more readily on his blog, here: http://jabberwockyminiatures.blogspot.com/p/rust-tutorial.html

 

My major change to the method described is that I wanted an effect of rust in-progress, so there's a bunch more metallic on this little guy's snack than you see in the tutorial.

i always loved that sculpt. Back in my MtG days, I had one of those on a Reaper level counter.

I'm saving that tutorial. It looks fantastic. The beasty himself looks pretty indistinct, not a lot of highlights or shapes to pull the eye. His eyes especially could use something to draw our eyes toward them. It blends in so much to the rest of the mini that it's hard to tell what I'm looking at.

 

That rust, though. Yowza!

I played in a game many years ago where the party mage cast a Charm Monster spell on a rust monster and we took it along as a pet.

 

A few rooms later we ran into an iron golem. "Rusty!! Suppertime!!"

Ah - the old TSR in-house. One of the very few that actually looks recognizable! I hear you on the Rakshasa, might as well melt it down - looks half melted to start with!

 

 

The Partha TSR Rust Monster is one of my least favourites, it looks sort of bland. In this case, I might give the points over to the TSR in-house version. It looks more lively.

 

 

*For anybody confused, this miniature is from the shortlived TSR AD&D Line that TSR produced on their own in the early-mid 80's before handing the license to Partha. Like the TSR Marvel Superheroes, most of these are horrifically abominable sculpts. There are rare precious gems, like this guy.

I wish I still had my copy of the original rust monster (that is the rubbery plastic toy 'dinosaur' that it is based off of) Not as cute as this guy though

Yeah, this one I'd paint again. The past week, with this Rust Monster and the Carrion Crawler, has been a blast for painting fun sculpts. I wouldn't be surprised if I paint at least one more of the crawler, and I'd happily paint as many of this guy as I could get my hands on. I'd do different versions, too.

Player 2: Actually, that's the lesser-known cousin of the rust monster, the verdigris monster. If you have any copper pieces to throw it, it'll leave us alone.

Player 1: oh...well...that's boring...OHMYGODWHATISTHAT?!?

Player 2: Ah! The extremely rare Tarnish Monster. It's not surprising it's so gaunt, poor thing can only eat silver. Since the eradication of Lycanthropy in Thrane, adventurers just don't carry as much of the stuff.

Player 1: Huh. Never thought of the far-reaching ecological effects of removin--whoa! That one's...so...pretty...

Player 2: Crap! RUN! Arcane Disjunction Monster! AAUUUGGH! *pitterpatterpitterpatter*

Player 1: Arca-whatsit, now? HEY! It just ate my Cloak of Resistance! And my Ioun stone! NOOOOOOO!
