I hope the new edition does as well in the stores as it is on the Kickstarter. I've always liked Chaosium. They are right across the Bay from me.

They were in the booth right next to me at KublaCon this past weekend, and it seemed like except for their shirts, they did not get a lot of business at all. They cut out early on the last day. Made me sad.

They're one of those great, venerable game companies and they deserve to be around a long time.

I too am a great fan of CoC and started playing it in the early eighties. I wish I could be more enthusiastic about this project... The previous Orient Express Kickstarter (still a work in progress I see) seemed like an odd choice to me as a reboot and didn't draw me in. I ran it with my group in the 90s and we made it tremendous fun by adding lots of NPC narratives and subplots, but the campaign itself wasn't what I would call a classic. The game used to have an elegant simplicity and was wonderfully rules-light and intuitive. 6th edition seemed to bog it down with rules. In this Kickstarter, the paperback of the softcover rulebook is 40 bucks, which is five bucks more than the 6th edition on their website.

Just thinking out loud ... please disagree with me.

I tend to agree, I started with 2nd edition then moved onto the GW published 3rd edition and never really felt the need to change

(4th/5th were ok and I agree 6th was weak)

By the time I stopped running stuff regularly I'd added my own bits and pieces to it, but since it really works best as out and out role playing (as opposed to rule obsessed roll playing) I don't see the advantage

(I realised gaming companies make more money from a new rule set than from anything else, but unless there are really major issues to fix it's kind of annoying for the players)

A bit off topic, but did anyone get anywhere with the D20 version?

I'll even attempt to keep my reply on topic ... I have a copy and it was pretty interesting and had some very good writing, but was clearly an attempt to bring in players who were into D20 rules rather than offer CoC players something new ... which is okay of course, but/and thus essentially the point was to make more rules. It also had a very "contemporary" feel that was reflective of the popularity of Delta Green at the time. I even think the illustrations showed what seemed like contemporary teenagers investigating mysteries, a la Scooby Doo (I should check that). I think that with 5.5 and 6, Chaosium was essentially trying to complete with the D20 version (ironically), which was pointless, because D20 Cthulhu went nowhere. Thus, in a way, this Kickstarter might be seen as a further development of that path (that's the on topic part). Or it might not, as there does seem to be a commitment to the 1920s setting in the Kickstarter comments. If so, that is a good thing in my opinion.

This is groundless speculation based on my personal feelings.

I can confirm the fun and useability of 7th ed.

I was just reading about the proposed changes to the rules here:

Do you know if the changes to how you can use Luck points made it into the 7th edition in the end? I didn't see any mention of that on the Kickstarter page but I may have overlooked it.

I don't know exactly what I'm allowed to say. I signed an NDA.

No sweat.

Changing direction -- I just checked back in on this Kickstarter hoping they would have sweetened the pot. Now I'm confused. It looks like they are offering a bunch of current and recently attained stretch goals only for people who spend either 111 dollars on the leatherette investigators book (12 takers so far -- but this book doesn't stand alone) or 222 dollars on a leatherette keepers book (6 backers so far) or 333 dollars for both (136 backers so far). That's 154 people out of the 1897 backers of this project. This seems unlikely to attract a lot of new backers. Rather, it strikes me as an attempt to encourage current backers to spend more money in order to get the stretch goals. Maybe that's how Kickstarter generally works, but it doesn't really make sense to me.

Sorry if these comments annoy anyone -- this is mostly an attempt to sort out my own feelings towards this Kickstarter and try to be more positive about a project I would really like to get enthusiastic about.

More I'd guess that they feel they REALLY have to reward those who have spent such a huge sum on an RPG book

(these are even more expensive than the recent run of White Wolf World of Darkness prestige KS re-releases)

and then you'll need another ordinary copy to play with anyway.....

In general I'd treat it not so much as a KS for the new rule set, but more a KS for a Collectors Copy of the new rule-set for really dedicated collectors
