The Basilisk
People like cute things, it's normal. If you ask me, it's kind of nice to have a little break from the usual in most cases, including miniatures.
Moderator Darsc Zacal Posted June 1, 2013 Moderator Share Posted June 1, 2013 I used to watch MarineBoy and Kimba the White Lion when I was young. Was Kimba Chibi? Also. I like Mouslings. But I don't think they're Chibi.
Sergeant_Crunch
Wow, a reference to Urusei Yatsura. You don't see that one in casual browsing of the interwebs very often.
ShadowRaven
Kimba would, I think count as chibi,

Mildly amusing story (to me), I used to have a Saturn sedan that I called Lum because it would build up a static charge while driving and shock the first person out of the car. I used to tell passengers that she was showing her affection towards them. Edited June 1, 2013 by Sergeant_Crunch
ShadowRaven
did you get leopard print seat covers? if not you totally should have gotten leopard print seat covers. Lum had leopard print covering her seat after all edit: oops, sorry. 'Tiger print' Edited June 1, 2013 by ShadowRaven
Sergeant_Crunch
Unfortunately my pay at the time barely covered the car payment, insurance, and gas so no leopard print seat covers. That would have been hilarious.
JackMann
It's important to note that the reason for Chibi-ness, and big eyes in Japanese animation, does not have its origins in Japan. According to the people who research these things, early Japanese manga and anime artists are on record as saying they were trying to copy the large eyes and childlike features they saw on Disney characters. As often happens across a cultural divide, the results became more and more exaggerated. Specifically, Osamu Tezuka (creator of Astroboy and often called the Father of Anime) was inspired by Carl Barks's Scrooge McDuck comics.
redambrosia
Art, products, Kickstarters. That crap is everywhere. I hate it! What is the appeal? And why does it seem to have mass appeal? Chibi & SD are cute. That's really all there is to why people like them. As to why they're so popular... Girls like cute things, guys too though not as much, and girls make up roughly 50% of the population. Not all girls adore cute things and are nuts about chibi things, but a good amount are. I would not let it bother you. There's lots of stupid out in the world and liking chibi & SD things doesn't seem important or problematic enough to waste an emotion like hate on. Plus, there's not a thing you can do about it. Ignore it, don't waste your energy.
Gailbraithe
I'm not really into anime or anything like that, but I did pick up Super Dunegon Explore and all of the expansions. (Currently 8 models away from finishing the whole damn collection). There is something inherently funny about cute little skeletons and video-game sprite like characters. It's a nice break from the normal grimdarky, dark heavensy sort of stuff I normally paint.

I <3 Rumiko Takahashi's older stuff. Ever seen Mermaind Trilogy? Creepy. -Dave
Cassu
When you say, 'that crap is everywhere,' do you mean in general or in the minis scene? Because I honestly wish there were more chibi minis out there, I'd be all over that! As everyone else has said, to each their own. You don't like it? You don't need to, no-one is suggesting you need to. I personally am not interested in sci-fi minis or games at all (past Star Wars) but that doesn't mean I'm judging people that do. psyberwolfe1
Chibi, SD, and mouselings share one thing in common: they can all die in a fire cut up in a thousand pieces. Oh wait ... Buglips said smile and nod.
