The Last Hurrah Project..Photo Heavy

Recommended Posts

Thanks for taking the time to comment, redambrosia; I really liked the "spiffy" description...nice choice of words. With all the motivation I have no excuse not to accomplish something today.

When I started The Project, I just decided to go with everything I've come to love about minis & all the different fantastical worlds they are used in. The result is a rather surrealistic, eerie place that is reminiscent of Labyrinth with a lot of Tim Burton thrown in & a couple of things I tried in the '60s...it sound horrendous, but fun nonetheless.

As I plod slowly along with the next board, I thought I'd add a few photos of the Local Folk.

A couple of Faeries have moved into the copse above Heep's Bat Cave:

Her Mushroom requested his photo...since he asked nicely:

I'll try to find the photos of Crazy Mary & the Piranha Club for the next post. In the interim, your kind comments would be most welcome...mostly.

Well, I meant what I said about this being so much cooler than the fantasy world featured at the Miniature World museum in Victoria B.C. (I really wish I hadn't forgotten to bring my camera on our honeymoon.) Anyway, they had a few different "worlds", mini displays of various scales and genres. The coolest by far was the Future world, 15mm I think, all lit with black lights, space scenes and little alien worlds.

Then there were historical scenes in a variety of scales, beautifully done all. Amazing details on those battles. A really cool train set of the Canadian frontier over the course of about 100 years. There were a bunch of doll houses. And there was a circus train set (really neat because it went from night to day).

And there was "Fantasy World". Really more like children's storybook world. Watered-down, Disney-ized storybook world. Kinda lame, storybook world. That's falling apart in places.... It looked like it was made and installed about 40 years ago. Actually, it was  I found out after reading a pamphlet.

Completely lacking the exctiment and adventure which have come to characterize the fantasty genre, not to mention the creepiness, the danger, the... goblins!

In short, your project would be a way cooler installment. ^_^

Thanks again for your kind reply. Funny thing is I've had a couple of Folks over the years tell me I should be doing pieces for a Museum...with my lack of hearing that could have been mausoleum though. That aside, I am delighted you are enjoying The Project. I'll try to update it regularly for you.

Two new Hovls have been added to the Shanty Town. To commemorate the occasion, I thought some TRULY mediocre photos might be in order. SO here's a quick tour of the place:

Thanks for the kind reply, Stubbdog.

Since the last update, I've added a couple of Haunted/Possessed Trees to the left portion of the Water front property. AND there's a multi-story shack conglomeration that may be finished over the weekend. SO updates are imminent.

I stumbled across your Bio by hitting the wrong reply link, & spotted that you are a Fellow Texan...I'm in Horseshoe Bay, about 60 miles West of Austin. Where do you call home?

Hey! I recognize those crazy, creepy mushrooms!! Glad to see that you decided to come show off your unique creations! I love the creativity that goes into all of your work. It's just the right amount of cute ( maybe whimsical is a better word) and creepy.

Now that the shanty Town is nearing completion, I thought a few photos of astounding mediocrity would be in order.

My jaw is still on the floor right now...but wow...amazing. I especially like the less-lit ones, lends to a slightly more creepy atmosphere for the shanty town and such that seems just perfect. Truly incredible work there.

Also, I may (likely) have just missed it...but why are you calling it your "Last Hurrah?"

Thanks MUCHO for the kind comments, NomadZeke...that's a good jolt of motivation.

I also like the darker photos better. They have more of the feel of the setting to them...not having the myriad of little flaws standing out glaringly is another good point to them.

The Last Hurrah title comes mostly from the realization that at my age I probably have only one major project left in me. The Project, however, is a quite extensive & includes everything I've come to love about toy soldiers, fantasy, horror, steam punk, & cartoons over the 50 odd years that I've been involve in this divine madness.

Here's a peak at the Court of the Goblin King board that is a long time W.I.P.:

The Court is a former cavern...I got the idea from a National Geographic article about Hang Son Doong, a vast cavern in North Vietnam. The board is a little less than 3' X 3'. The Mushroom Tower is about 30" high. Part of the reason for doing the Shanty Town is to practice the scaffolding that will connect all the higher places...adds a little excitement if I get to game on it.
