Song of Blades and Heroes

Very cool. Did you make these units with the sbh calculator or did you pull them from a book? I only recognize some of the templates

Entirely from the SBH calculator. Any similarity to the templates is purely coincidental.

I kind of stopped working on the project, because basically I'm flaky (and the bigger it got, the more painting it required), but if people are interested I could put some more work into it and finish the project. If I do that, I'll probably remove all of the non-Reaper models, and add in some more Reaper models. Make them match their Warlord armies a bit better.

Never played SoBH before but the simple ruleset has me very interested. I picked up the rulebook recently and am planning a Lord of The Rings campaign. Surprisingly, I couldn't find anything online so am having to build it out myself. :(

Here is a link to the online community for SBH. They even have templates for LOTR characters:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/songofblades/

The LOTR characters do utilize all of the supplemental keywords. I personally only use the special rules from the original release (to avoid powercreep).

I only have the basic rulebook as I didn't want to buy everything available without having ever played the game. :)

But I was thinking more in terms of a campaign storyline with corresponding missions (and alternate missions depending on who won the previous mission) rather than character templates (from looking at the rulebook, creating a custom character looks very easy anyway). For example, mission 1 would have Frodo and the other hobbits starting on one edge of a long map and trying to escape to the other end with the orcs setting up in the middle of the map to try and block them. Success would mean the second mission is travel through Moria. However, failure would mean that the orcs have the Ring and are returning it to Sauron but the Fellowship at Rivendell (minus the hobbits who never made it there) have a chance to intercept and take back the Ring.

Anyway, that was the kind of campaign storyline I was looking for - a series of missions themed around the events of LoTR with corresponding success/failure states.

Acquired the game. First read through completed. Simple (at least for a long time gamer as myself) and should be fun to field some of my vast collection of random miniatures. Might even spur me to paint more.

We'll see if the family can handle a skirmish system. Got them to play GammaWorld a couple of times, this should be easier.

Must remember ... I don't need every free item on DriveThruRPG.

LOL

This is a good article. A dad teaching his daughter the ways of the mini:

There are even some familiar minis in the photos.

If an 8 year old can learn this game, anyone can.

Big fan of SBH. It's the only skirmish game I play. I like the 2 failure rule. It's a great cost/benefit trade off.

I got Andrea's RPG (Tales of Blades and Heroes) but haven't really been able to get into it.

I'm currently working on an SBH battle board and scenarios for a Moria game. (some updates on my "48 orcs" blog). You can also see a short video I did to explain the basic of the SBH rules

I'm definitely a Big Fan too. SBH is pretty much all I've been playing for the last few years. It's a Great system! The Campaign system, Song of Deeds and Glory, really works well. And the bonus? In the last three or four years I've finished and gamed with more figs than I had before I started playing Song! (I'm a slow painter and I've been Collecting and painting figs for decades . . .) It's a lot of Fun, quick, easy and yet surprisingly subtle. It's a keeper.

Really nice job on your army lists Gailbraithe! I'd like to do something similar. Any pointer's on how you did that or what you used? Thanks in advance!

Sign up on SBH's yahoo group and you will be given access to the unit calculator. It is an application which allows you to design your own units. Each keyword and stat has been assigned a value so all you have to do is enter the stats you want and the keywords you want and viola! It calculates your pt value and your are ready to go.

Thanks jdizzy001. Yeah, I've been a member there for years too. And for other folks that might be interested, but don;t want to join the yahoo group (which is very good by the way!), the handy dandy warband calculator is also available at http://www.ganeshagames.net/army_builders/SBHbuilderRevised-v1217.html

I meant his "army list" roosters rosters. They're sweet! From templates or what? Any help welcome 'cause I definitely want to put together something similar.

The yahoo group is much more active than the Ganeshagames forums, so it's a good resource for all things SBH.

Not to hijack, but have people tried the RPGTBH (Tales of Blades and Heroes) much? I picked it up when it came out, but never really got a chance to try it much. It looks like it has some cool potential, but it's different enough from classic D&D-type gaming that I didn't get a good feel for it just from a read-through.

Yeah Kengar, I've tried it and loved it just as much as Song. I only ran a one-off all day session as an Old School special treat for my Friends. (2 of the 4 of us now live out of state, so we can only get together once or twice a year for a Game Day.) It's been a long time since I've run an rgp, and it took some prep time. My local buddy and I ran a couple of practice scenatioes to get the hang of it before the main event. The GM has to be on his toes; it's perfect for wide open sand box play. I think using Tales really helped produce the best role playing I've ever been a part of. It really was pretty amazing and memorable.

I'd love to be able to use it for a real Campaign . . . >sigh<

I got as far as character creation, but this was right after finishing a game of sbh. Everyone was pumped and loved the idea of making characters based on the minis. Tale of Blades and Heroes (TBH) is as valuable as SBH. Worth all $8 dollars.

You may be asking, "Jdizzy, how can you rate and RPG you have never "played?"

Well, I am an 14 year RPG gamer, I have homebrewed many RPG systems that are balanced and actually function. I collect, in addition to minis, RPG systems. I have played Cortex, D20, BESM, OVA, Star Wars D20, Star Wars D6, D6 (in general), Pendragon, L5R, Valiant the Story Telling Game (okay, I haven't played this one but I know the mechanics), Castles & Crusades, The One Ring and MERP. If there is one thing I have learned, it is what makes RPG mechanics playable, and what makes them not so playable.

@jdizzy: Gaming 14 years? N00b. I've got twenty siders over twice that old! :poke:

(no, really. I do!)

Seriously though. Thanks for the info. I'll need to pull the books back out this summer and look at them again (I also get the first "Perils" book).

I have yet to find reliable 20-siders. I inherited mine from a friend. I think they were crafted poorly (air bubbles inside). Everyone who uses them has a very difficult time rolling above a 10. More difficult than is considered average. Actually I had 1 20-sider that had the opposite problem (now that was a great d20) it rolled over 15 more than average. What a great place for an air bubble. Sadly, that die vanished. The dice gods became angry with it I suppose.

@Talae: You're going to love it. For the simplicity, the mechanics and the freedom afforded you to use what ever mini you want. Good Luck
