Last Knight
In the Djibouti airport, waiting my plane to Ethiopia. Getting through immigration cost my last $15 as "tax." Better believe that's going on my travel claim... Also, LK cannot attend RC because LK is flat broke. I was supposed to be back to work right now, dagnabbit. My base pay without at least weekend overtime is just about break even.
LittleBluberry
Last Knight, I hope you at least get some serious love & cuddles from the family when you show up for extra time. (Although I'm sure you could have skipped the extra travel time.) And honestly I'm glad they let you bank that much vacation time. Small comfort, but still.
TGP
What on earth is on Beagle's "Saint George's Day" thread? It crashed my ipad so hard its ancestors died. The picture of Knigget vrs. Dragon has a lot of pixels. Forum display software tries to reduce it to screen width, but if clicked on the pop-up shows the full size. Loading all those pixels is probably what did it.
MatrissaTheEnchantress
Talking is sooooo overrated. I'm a little bit the opposite. Ok, not a little bit.I'm with Red on this one (which LB can confirm based on first hand experience. ) Edited April 23, 2014 by MatrissaTheEnchantress
MatrissaTheEnchantress
On the phone front, it was my lucky day in the end. My husband took my phone to Rogers to find out the cost to either fix it or replace it and discovered that, for some reason we still don't understand, it would only be $9 to upgrade (!!?!??!)Well, that was a no-brainer, and now I have a shiny new, bright yellow, Nokia Lumia 1020 Windows 8 phone.Still working on configuring and reinstalling everything though. Normally I could have done a direct transfer from my old phone, but because I couldn't see the screen I had no way to turn on the Bluetooth to enable it. ub3r_n3rd
LK - Sorry to hear about your paper troubles, hopefully it all gets resolved soon. It's a double-edged sword I'm sure as you want to be there with your shipmates, but at the same time you do get to go home to be with your loving family. Back to randomness: Got all our errands ran successfully last night, got home and set up the Apple Airport Extreme in about 10 minutes, and even had time during the later part of the evening to slop some brown liner on the 3 figures I'm painting as part of my figure exchange (they are all part of a small vignette). I call that a win.
Damenace
@LK by the time I get your package in the mail and it arrives in the US, you'll be back on your ship ;)
MatrissaTheEnchantress
So, completely discounting the few more famous individuals I have met as a result of them attending VCON *cough*Tod Lockwood*cough*Monte Cook*cough*Jonathan Tweet*cough*Patrick Rothfuss*cough*Joseph Picardo*cough* I do have a story about meeting famous people in "casual" contexts. For several summers in the late 1980's, from about the age of 17 to 21, I worked for Princess Cruise Lines in Vancouver as a "guest expediter". What that actually meant was that I worked at the Vancouver Airport either outside the exit from international arrivals to collect people who were arriving in order to get on one of our cruise ships headed to Alaska and direct them to our shuttle bus that would take them to the port or outside the entrance to US departures to assist people arriving on buses from the cruise ship that had docked in order to head home. So, basically a glorified sign-post ("Please go this way to the bus." "Please go this way to check in for your flight.") So, every once in a while someone famous would come through the airport for some reason or another. My colleagues and I were usually in a prime spot to see them because our desk by international arrivals was located outside customs but behind a second set of doors beyond which the "regular rabble" of families, etc. expecting arrivals had to wait. And, unlike most of my colleagues at the time (and, apparently, several of you) I have no compunction against brazenly approaching famous people (cf. my previous post responding to Redambrosia's statement about being an extrovert that talks too much). As a result, I was able to briefly speak with and, in all cases, get an autograph from the following individuals: Comedian George Burns Musician Cindy Lauper Actor John Candy Actor John Travolta The shortest conversation was with George Burns (he was old and obviously rather tired from his flight). The longest was with John Candy who was twice as tall and as big as I had expected and just as friendly as most of his character portrayals would suggest. Cindy Lauper was tiny - the same height as me (roughly 5'3") but very thin - she didn't look unhealthy but I was fairly svelte back then and she definitely had a smaller waist than I did. John Travolta was actually heading out rather than coming in and said he'd enjoyed his visit and wished he'd had more of a chance to explore the area. CaptainPete
Back to families, I'm some-what afraid to find out what might fall out of my father's side of the tree, seeing as my grandmother once pulled a gun on my grandfather... Which no one bothered to mention until they were both dead. This was the conversation, while we're going through my grandfather's things: Me: Dang, Dutch (my grandfather) had a lot of guns... (points to small pistol) Where did he pick that one up? My aunt: Oh, I remember that one. Mom pulled that one on dad one time. Me: And people ask why I don't spend time with my family...
TGP
For want of a nail... In the Djibouti airport, waiting my plane to Ethiopia. Getting through immigration cost my last $15 as "tax." Better believe that's going on my travel claim...Also, LK cannot attend RC because LK is flat broke. I was supposed to be back to work right now, dagnabbit. It's a double-edged sword I'm sure as you want to be there with your shipmates, but at the same time you do get to go home to be with your loving family. So the Navy is picking up air fare for a round trip (to the states and then back to the ship) because of a lack of paperwork? That there is a budget for. But, there is no budget to hunt down some civilian[?]contractor who works for the Coast Guard, who does this certification paperwork, and pay the gal (or guy) time-and-a-half overtime for maybe three-four hours one evening, to find your application in an inbox, print it out, finish it up, and zap it to wherever it needs to go. No budget for that. Nobody with the power to rattle both chains of command to make that happen. Good thing there is not a war on...
Thes Hunter
It's always screw the other guy. But what you said is exactly right TGP, there isn't someone who has the authority to rattle both chains of command. --- I have now planted the flower boxes. Just need to clean up. Then it's time to fold the laundry, make blueberry muffins and tacos (but not taco flavored muffins). Then back to work for another 12 or so days.
