Randomness Challenge! Tangents Only Thread

Today (yes - today. It was after midnight my time and around 8pm theirs) I finally managed to get my Aussies together for Monsterhearts.

For two of the three of them (unless something changed recently and no one mentioned it), it's their first time roleplaying. Ever. None of them have played Monsterhearts before. So I wasn't too sure how to approach things in a way that would be non-threatening to them.

I decided ahead of time that they'd probably have more investment in the game if they contributed to it. And they'd be better able to answer questions about their character if they knew kind of what sort of environment they lived in. Full Apocalypse World style, I just asked them questions about the world and they answered. One person really wanted a forest, for example. And he also wanted suburbia. So it's a cozy little Goldilocks city (not too big; not too small) called Nightvale sitting snug next to hundreds of miles worth of national forest.

I walked them through my questions and the homeroom set-up of the school and then was like, "And here's a map. We're just going to put down a few items on the map and we can fill in the rest later as we play. We're just putting a few things down so we'll know kind of where things are in relation to each other." I expected to spend five minutes with the players putting the forest, the school, and their houses down on the map and then we'd get to character creation.

Nope. We spent about 45 minutes on it because they were all excited about designing their town. Not just boxes for "city park" but they took the time to make hedges and place trees and a statue. They debated over where to place the police station and were aghast when they realized they hadn't added a fire station. You guys - our map has streets. We have a lake with a walking trail around it. It looks really cool. Especially for something made in Google Drawings rather than hand drawn. They were even giving me awesome things to build on while they worked. "If we put the school by the lake, we can have a rowing team." "We need a 7-11 across the street from the school so we can grab something to eat at lunch instead of caf food." They were so into it, I had to ask them a few times to move on to character creation (I wasn't being ignored - they were just really focused on the map and all talking at once).

But it did mean that character creation was a little slapdash. I have "post it notes" on each character. One person has to add another Move. Another has to tell me whether his character remembers how she died. And the third player had to leave early because she was feeling poorly and had to work early, so we're just going to finish her character up tomorrow (well, tonight for me, tomorrow for her).

I didn't really expect to play tonight, so I'm not fussed about that. Hoping they'll want to play sometime this week, otherwise, Monsterhearts Monday isn't until the 28th since two of the three players will be out of town next Monday. But I still can't get over how much fun they had with the map. It seems promising.

I just realized that Goblin math is more advanced than Kickstarter math.

In Kickstarter math, the most you can have of one item is 10, while Goblin math allows for 20.

Kinda makes you wonder about who's running Kickstarter.

ALSO!

People! People! People! Please stop posting in the Stonehaven Elves kickstarter thread until it goes live. You are driving me crazy!!!

If I ever have children I'm trading them to a witch for gold.

Let me know if you have any good contacts.... around here the witches only want to get in the sack and that doesn't help with the kid into gold equation.

I've been trying to turn the bags of baby poo into champagne. When I crack that one alls good.

I have just realized that I have been brainwashed. I have opened the main Reaper website e time now to go to the figure finder to find some figures that correspond to the mounted figures in the Core Expansion #2. I open the site just fine but all three time instead of opening the figure finder, I reflexively open the forums.

I, I, think I may have a problem.

Hi my name is Jeff and I am a forumite.

Thanks for all the well-wishing, everybody! :)

The interview went very well, but unfortunately, after getting more details about the job, it doesn't look like one that will work for us for various reasons. It was still a very positive experience, though, and it was nice to know that somebody wanted to hire me. ::): One of the biggest reasons I hate job hunting is because the longer it goes on, the less I feel like I'm wanted, so I really needed this. :) Onward and upward!

@ OneBoot--Well, I just now caught up with this thread, so I'm late in wishing you good luck, but I'm glad to hear that it went well for you. I'm in the same boat as far as job hunting goes, so I'm glad you got a positive out if it!!

Note: Mixing white vinegar with the rinse aid in your dishwasher is not a good idea.

The foam draining out of it did subside about halfway through the rinse cycle, but I had visions of our kitchen being full of bubbles.

...Which, come to think of it, would have been kind of hilarious and awesome. ::D:

I was attempting to explain my hobby to an incredulous friend's wife, who seemed unconvinced that it was worth the time and energy involved.

Then I remembered that she liked to collect things.

Cute things.

And I showed her mouslings.

I think I may have gained a new apprentice.

My youngest has been watching first season episodes of Fraggle Rock in the next room while I do art. I always loved that show, but every time I watch (or listen) I am blown away by how good it was.

There's been the dealing-with-death episode, the stealing-the-moon episode, the vital water episode, and the heartrending Cantus the Minstrel episode.

This last one guest stars Jim Henson himself as Cantus, the wise mystic musician who plays the heartbreakingly beautiful pipe. The Jim Henson episodes of Fraggle Rock were always extra-special, and of all of them I loved the minstrels episodes the best.

After Jim Henson died so tragically I bawled like a baby. For years I wasn't able to watch the minstrel episodes without crying my eyes out.

Well, I just found out that I'm down to silent tears flowing, but I can actually concentrate and enjoy the show at the same time.

In many respects I am a sap.
