Prominent filker Tom Smith was at a science fiction convention the day the news of Henson's death broke. He promptly wrote and performed this tribute song, which won some sort of fan award that year:

EDIT: Is there some kind of Youtube disabler? I have seen embedded videos on other threads, but I've just twice posted a link to youtube here and it's vanished from my post.

On other threads, the full youtube address with "http://" embeds the video right into the post. Here it makes it vanish.

I don't know the real answer to your question Pingo so I will hereby make one up. Since this is the Off Topic Rampancy section it was assumed that any video links we post here would obviously be hideously inappropriate. You know, things like home movies of Buglips eating or something. In the interest of all our sanity a decision was taken to protect us from ourselves.

Or maybe there is just something weird in the settings.

I never realized it was Jim Henson until now so it never brought me to tears. But the episode of Sesame Street where Mr. Hooper dies, still knocks me down. But now Pingo, you've brought tears to my eyes, and a smile to my lips. Thank you for bringing up some great memories again

I cry every time I hear a boy and his frog. Every single time.

O.o

You got the video to embed.

::(: My ipad's interface hates me.

... Wait a minute. What's "youtu.be"?

Could it be that only links to "youtube.com" are disabled?

Thank you for posting that. I have no idea why I couldn't.

I understand that Tom Smith himself has never been able to perform it without choking up somewhere.

EDIT: Oh look, see, the video link vanished from my post even in the quote. Soft argh.

Yeah, the guy who played him died, heart attack I think it was, and the producers and cast did the most amazing thing, they devoted an episode to explaining death. With Big Bird being the 'kid' of the show they explained it to him, but in a way that explained it to the kids watching as well, in a beautifuly honest and open way. It was one of the crowning moments of television

you know, it amazes me, He's been gone for so many years, and most of us have probably never so much as been in the same place, let alone met the man, and yet he still tugs at the old heart strings when we remember the magic he made

1936-1990 Here's to you Jim

I have to admit I'm starting to get pretty tired of pirates and zombies. I love pirates as much as the next person, and I've been a longtime fan of zombies. I view the imminent zombie apocalypse with a great deal of anticipation. But, pop culture and the media are rapidly cramming these things in my face so much that I'm ready for a break from pirates and zombies. Hopefully they will move on to the next target for commercial oversaturation soon, and I can go back to enjoying my Romero and Savini movies in peace.

It's the curse of the trochee. I predict we'll soon move on to archers and ferrets.
