Moral of the story : see what DZ does; flee what Beagle backs?

Today's Update promised better communication and a chance to update your shipping address.

We'll see what those promises are worth in 48hrs.

Edit: the address survey went live! :wow:

That's a happy surprise, after all the previously missed promises & deadlines.

I don't know why exactly, but even with all the delays and problems with communications in the project, I've always felt like it will ultimately fulfill. I think a saner person would have probably walked away by now though, this seems to have been a huge money loser for Alex. I remember last year he was taking jobs to fund costs and refunds, I imagine it's only gotten worse since then.

In any case, the latest update has included a kickstarter survey for addresses, as well as instructions for those who picked up abandoned pledges after the refunds from last year. Here is the relevant section of the update, since I know a few forumites picked up a few and might not be checking updates:

"For those who are receiving abandoned pledges or pledged with PayPal and have address changes, please send your address changes to:

[email protected]

This e-mail address is dedicated to ONLY abandoned pledge/paypal pledge address changes (since you won't have access to the Kickstarter address editor). As well, the cutoff time will be December 28th."

An announcement from Alex Lim. He's run out of cash and is, for the time being at least, unable to pay for the shipping of all the products currently sitting at distribution hubs. Disappointing for me as this is the second notification this week of a project that I backed going under (All Quiet on the Martian Front - was the other one). The curse of the Beagle continues

I still don't think this is going under. Alex ran out of money last year and was working jobs to raise money for the kickstarter back then to pay for refunds. Hopefully he will get some income from the retail release of Dragon Tides.

If he ends up asking for additional funds for shipping I will contribute. I have already gotten 40 impressive minis for my $65 (actually $100 with add-ons) investment. If that were all I got I'd consider it a fair return on investment, $2.50 per mini is pretty cheap. Of course if you add the $150 I pledged for the followup campaign, that's a much less impressive $6.25 per mini, but I've paid as much or more for other ks minis.

This ks is a mess, no doubt. Alex clearly didn't plan expenses well at all. The minis that turned into such a large part of the project were just a last minute stretch goal, as was the drastically reduced ($10 international) shipping. However, I do admire the fact that he hasn't cut and run, even in the face of a lot of (understandable) anger from backers. He must have sunken a pile of money into this project already but he keeps working at it, everything still feels like it is moving forward, no matter how slowly.

Wow. All Quiet went under, that's a shame. If this one does it will be for the same reason, offering way more then what could be reasonably produced for what we paid, however I don't think I'll be too mad as having gone through this with Drake I have to say that Alex has been very upfront with problems and hasn't shyd away from talking with people after posting bad news. Taking extra work for refunds--and actually delivering on some of them also shows he's trying his best.

Hell, if he just lets people pay for shipping and ships stuff he's way ahead of Benji who just keeps everything in storage and then totally f' ups a tv appearance with said models.

All KSers are gambles (reaper could be hit by a meteor next week) some way more then others but I'm glad I'm kind of over KSers now as there are just more that are popping up ready to fail from people that really mean to do a good job and yet can't deliver.

I'm starting to think there's a better chance of rocks falling out of the sky than seeing my minis for this... Still haven't heard back from them at all.

You'd be correct, considering that even if you go by conservative estimates, about 100 tons of material hit the Earth per day. Most of it is dust-sized, but hey, as long as it is something like silicates or iron ores, that's technically small rocks, right?

This kickstarter will be a good example when people complain about shipping in other kickstarters. The $10 worldwide shipping still has to get paid by someone. It sounds like he's not cutting corners on other parts of the product to get these shipped out, but he's obviously looking at some hard choices right now. If he can't ship the products he has on stock he wont be able to ship anything else either.
