O'Leary's WIP Thread of Everything Reaper

Wow Anne, I'm always so impressed with your work, just such a great use of colors and you really did a wonderful job with that bronze.

Thank you!

Ooohh...that close up is nice. There's a lot of richness in these metals. It's going to be awesome when it's done.

I love this technique. There are a lot of steps, but it's all fast work and it builds up quickly. I'm not ready for NMM, but I think this is a valid technique for the personality of this sculpt. I've also come up with a design I'd like to free hand on his shield. Wish me luck!

I like the way the metals are coming out on this one. I'm not so sure about that green but if its working for you then its all good. I prefer the shaded metallics over NMM. It usually looks great in photographs but not as sharp in person (there are certainly exceptions to that though!). I have never bothered with it myself, but its certainly worth a try if you feel up to it. I think your blending is certainly good enough to pull it off.

Yay you like it! I'm so happy about that. I'm just now getting ready to try out the free-hand on the shield. I'm doing the shield as if it is covered in muck and I've never tried that before. I'll have to get the free-hand to blend back into that and not ruin it. Hope to be done by tomorrow. I'm loving these BONES!

Your aged metal technique is just all kinds of awesome! I agree that it suits the personality of this sculpt quite nicely. I also think that the red and green balance each other out beautifully; there's not too much of either one, and it doesn't look at all "Christmas-y." The lining looks really sharp as well!

I wish I could see one of your minis in-person! They're so lovely and vibrant in the pictures, and I've found from personal experience that pictures rarely do 3D works of art justice. ^_^

When I get ready to send out another batch of mini's I'll send you one. I've also got two Dark Sword figures I'd like you to have. One is a female archer and the other is a female mage. It would be nice for you to have some metal mini's to paint!

Beautiful job with the red! Great contrast!

Thank you. I've worked on it some more and brought up the highlights a good bit.

I got the shield done! I made it look dirty and painted a skull on it. It's not going to make anyone say "Wow!! That's amazing, but it's not horrid for a first attempt at free hand. Right now I'm doing NMM flames on the sword and it's taking forever.

NMM...flames? You have my attention.

I worked on it last night till my head hurt. Then I had to put it aside and work on something else. Right now my problem is putting that much layering into such small spaces. I don't just want to slap down a bright yellow on top of a red, I want to build up to it in the crevices. And with that sword the high points and low points reverse themselves as you go up the sword. I'm probably a fool for trying this, but if I fail, might as well do it publicly!

PROJECT #9

60103: Anti Paladin

Sculptor: Bobby Jackson

Page 2

I'm painting this guy in tandem with the Evil Warrior as they both have some of the same colours and techniques. I waste less paint that way.

I can pretty much live with the coppers on him.

Here's what I need to improve or finish.

Clean up the slop on the tunic and increase contrast.

Glaze down the highlights on the collar then work those highlights back up. This will give me depth of colour.

Apply the silver to his chain mail.

Figure out how to approach that face as it's buried underneath that helmet. Perhaps do something creative with that skin tone. Maybe blue/grey?

Lining.

A brief how to on the glowing skulls.

1. Base coat in Reaper Pale Green

2. Wash with undiluted Secret Weapon Algae

3. Add small amounts of Reaper Saffron Yellow to the Pale green and layer that up slowly. It takes about 3 to 4 layers to bring it up to pure yellow at the highest points.

4. Add a tiny amount of Vallejo Black Ink to the Secret Weapon Algae and use a small brush to go back into the deepest crevices to darken and gain more contrast.

The green on both the minis looks really really good, also the blue on the anti paladin looks awesome.truly talented .. NMM flames oh my !

I'm going to start doing the highlights on the back of his cloak tonight. Folded fabrics are a real bugaboo for me still and then I need to look for a pattern to free hand on the bottom of the cloak. Something simple I think. After that I'm taking a day away from painting. I'm into tiny detail and I'm getting severe headaches from eye strain.

Oh goodness, Anne, you really don't have to do that! I know international shipping is expensive, and I don't want to cause you any undue trouble!

...Actually, I have an idea. If you really want to do that, can I send you a mini in exchange? We could do a mini swap!
