AnneO'Leary
Would they actually defund libraries? That's uncivilized behavior and it would change the fabric of society if they did such a thing. Even if you're not looking to make a living as a painter, you can still win contests and get free mini's from manufacturers.
AnneO'Leary
I've put a round of highlighting on my Dwarf. The blue I used is Reaper Cyan and it's my favourite blue. To get the highlights I just kept adding a little white with each layer. I will need to do at least one more layer and then do a final white on the highest of points. On the trousers I used the Reaper Khaki Triad and I think I'm done with those. The fur around his shoes was done with Reaper Ruddy Brown then given a wash with Vallejo Black Ink. Highlights were done using Reaper Desert Tan and Reaper Caucasian Skin. The metal boots and the axe had a layer of Reaper Blackened Steel followed by Vallejo Black Ink. I then did a light highlight with Vallejo Chain Mail. I will need to take those up using Reaper True Silver. His beard was highlighted with Reaper Fireball Orange and toned back down with SW Blood Red. The beard needs a lot more highlighting and better blended. I did his fur cloak with Reaper Dark Elf Triad and clearly I need to work on the highlights quite a bit. I used this triad for a really stupid reason. I just bought the colours and I wanted to see what they looked like. I do this a lot and really I should stop it. I'm not really happy with him at the moment as there is a good bit of slop here. I'll give him two more painting sessions then call him done as I've got the Pulp Competition figure on the table and I have to start on a figure for a Painting Duel. Critiques are most welcome.
CashWiley
Would they actually defund libraries? That's uncivilized behavior and it would change the fabric of society if they did such a thing. Even if you're not looking to make a living as a painter, you can still win contests and get free mini's from manufacturers. We barely get any state funding and in the 13 years I've been there no federal funding. The county has removed our funding line in each of the last 3 years, only to manage to get it back in under the deadline. The county exec is a good guy, but the state keeps pushing unfunded mandates down his throat, and NY has this new 2% tax cap, so just to keep up with inflation a budget needs to go to public vote...and we're a conservative place that generally votes down any tax increase (even if it's to pave roads or pay cops). The city would've defunded us except the last horrible mayor finally got voted out and we got a genuinely good mayor who values libraries. Anyway, it's a year by year thing, which is all most people can plan on. The toughest part is that my fiancee also works there, eggs and basket. Aaaanyway. I think you're being hard on yourself with the dwarf, he's coming along good. You can see what needs to be done. I don't think the fur is bad, either. Maybe try adding some blond shadow for the highlights on the red hair, worked for me with Dain, just the glints.
Tom T
CashWiley's right, you're being too hard on yourself. He's coming along fine! And it sounds like you know just where you want to go, and how to get there. I see why Reaper Cyan is your favorite blue. Thanks! Hmmm . . . And, um, buying colours and "just" to see what how they work and what they look like is NOT a "stupid" habit. It's what figure painters do!!!
aku-chan
+1 to you're being too hard on yourself. I hope mine looks ends up looking that good when I get around to painting him.

Maybe try adding some blond shadow for the highlights on the red hair, worked for me with Dain, just the glints. I saw your Dwarf and it's what inspired my palette. I like the bright colours with the ginger beard better than with brown. It stands out so much better. The digital age is good for some things, but terrible for others. While e-books are nice and save space and trees, they are no substitute for holding a physical book in my hands. And there is no substitute for the wonderful smell of a library. I can't imagine that my future grandchildren may grow up in a world where they don't get to experience that. CashWiley's right, you're being too hard on yourself. He's coming along fine! As soon as I get a new triad in, I'm looking for figures I can use it on. And then I do it to death for a while. Drives other people bonkers when I go on a "I got a new shade of pink" spree. Which is coming up soon! +1 to you're being too hard on yourself. I hope mine looks ends up looking that good when I get around to painting him. I think we're all our own worst critics. I look at my figures and I see all the things I did wrong. When I look at one I did months ago, I want to retch at how badly it was done. AnneO'Leary
Fulimbar is finally done. He didn't turn out as badly as I thought he was going to. There are some things I could still tinker with, but ultimately it's time to put him away and start on the next figure. I did a simple basing by putting him on a coin. I used a mixture of Medium Brown and Fine Buff ballast to get a more textured effect. This I painted with Reaper Forest Green, then Leaf Green, then Grass Green. I then mixed white into the Grass Green for highlights. For a little colour I added the leaves from Secret Weapons Falling Leaves collection. I have more pics of him that I will put up in Show Off later on today or tomorrow.
AnneO'Leary
#59024 Jackalope Project 3 Whilst waiting for paint to dry on my competition figures and my painting duel figures, I decided to dig these little guys out of the lead pile and see if I could make a small vignette just using materials I have in my bits box. I keep lids of all kinds in my box to use for bases. This is a lid off of a pint of milk. A friend of mine sculpts mushrooms on cocktail sticks and he sent me a box of them. I pulled out three that will be larger than the Jackalopes just to play with the idea of a world that goes on beneath the world we can see. I chose the red capped shroom for the center. I simply punched a whole in the top of the lid and used super glue to attach it. I prefer the gel, as it gives better adhesion. Because I want this to be quick and cheap, I used childrens modeling clay to build up layers. It will dry hard after coating it in glue and in ballast. Hardening will take about five hours. I've loads of gravel and rocks in my yard and keep a zip lock full of various sizes so I always have some on hand. I picked out a few and arranged them around the mushroom at varying heights.I then placed the figures on the rocks to make sure that the arrangement would be suitable for the placement of the figures. Next I covered the clay with a mixture of Buff and Medium Ballast. Using this mixture gives depth and variety to the ground cover. I use wood glue as it dries clear. I put on a pretty thick layer and brought glue down over the edges of the lid. I did this because this is a vignette and not a base I'm building. Because the layers are thick, I have to wait 2-3 hours before I can begin painting the ballast. I will add the other two mushrooms later when I decide where in relation to the figures I want to get depth of field.
AnneO'Leary
#59024 Jackalope Project 3 Page 2 I painted the ballast in Reaper Emerald Green. I like this colour for basing woodland scenes because it has so much depth to it and it gives me loads of room to highlight up in a multitude of shades. I put my figures back onto the rocks so I could decide where to place the other shrooms. I then used super glue to put the other two shrooms where I wanted them. I did one highlight with Reaper Green on the ballast and then painted the rocks with Reaper Military Grey. I followed that with a light wash of Vallejo Black Ink. It was also time to get a decent photo taken so I could see where to go next with highlights.

AnneO'Leary
#59024 Jackalope Project 3 Page 3 I used Reaper Leaf Green and Reaper Pale Green to do the highlights on the ballast. Rather than dry brush I used a damp brush as that gives me better control over where the paint goes and also gives more depth. The rocks were highlighted using Reaper Concrete Gray with increasing amounts of Reaper White added for final highlights. I've applied base coats to the jackalopes (except for antlers). I got a quick shot of them on the rocks in order to check placement. THINGS LEFT TO DO: Finish painting the jackalopes. Deepen the shadows and bring up the highlights on the shrooms. Add flower clumps and fallen leaves to the ballast. Paint the base in black. All together this little project has only taken about and hour and a half of my time and it has been a nice break from more serious painting.
AnneO'Leary
#59024 Jackalope Project 3 Page 4 These little dudes are finally done. The flower clumps you see are from Scenic Express and the leaves are from Secret Weapon. I built up the scene by gradually adding clumps and leaves to the base until I was satisfied with what I had. This is easy to do, but is a bit time consuming as one must use a small pair of tweezers to hold each clump and each leaf in order to get it to stick to the base. I'll post more photo's on Show Off later.
