PROJECT #6

03489 Black Orc Warriors

Sculptor-Tre Manor

THESE ARE NOT BONES FIGURES. THEY ARE METAL MINI'S.

I have done pieces in muted colours, but not for some time. I felt it was time that I did some Orcs and that I do them with dark skin. I looked at Orcs for a long time and didn't like many of them. But these Orcs by Tre are beautiful. They are big, bulky and vicious looking.

Colours used

Reaper Dark Elf Triad

Reaper Russet Brown

Reaper Griffon Tan

Reaper Dessert Tan

Reaper Forrest Green

Reaper Admantium Black

Reaper Phoenix Red

Vallejo Red Leather

Washes used

One of the challenges for me on this figure will be to get separation between the skin and the chainmail. The other will be getting the highlights on the skin right as I've never used this triad for skin before.

I wet blended the fur on the first orc and I was surprised at how easy it was. Now I have to work out how to highlight it, without losing the look of the blend.

50149 Natalia, Female Secret Agent

Sculptor Jeff Grace

Project #7

Page 1

A friend of mine who writes Science Fiction novels (published, but not famous) asked me if I could do up a figure for him that represented the main female character in his trilogy. I gave him the link to Reaper and told him to pick out one he liked. He's going to use her to promo his books.

I wanted to make the most of her dynamic pose by adding additional space between her raised leg and the base.

I used small craft tiles to mount her on.

I covered that with small buff ballast using wood glue.

I then went out to my yard to locate rocks and bits of gravel that would fit well around the tiles. I glued them in place with Super Glue gel.

Her cat suit will be painted in a dark blue black as that colour suits the sculpt well.

PROJECT #6

03489 Black Orc Warriors

Sculptor-Tre Manor

Page 2

I began working on these guys skin and faces to make sure I would be able to handle the palette with good results.

post-12251-0-99850500-1376435632_thumb.jpg

This guys face and skin in almost there. I based it in Reaper Dark Elf Shadow then began to feather in the first layer of highlights with Reaper Dark Elf Skin. The next layer was feathered in using Reaper Dark Elf Highlight. To bring those highlights up, I mixed Reaper Pale Amethyst with Vallejo White. I added small amounts of this to the Dark Elf Highlight. I did this because this triad carries a purple pigment and wanted to keep that purple throughout the highlighting process. I do not want a "chalky" grey to come out over the top. After I went up two more layers, I made a glaze from the Dark Elf Shadow and used it to unify and blend the layers. Next I will bring up one final highlight to make him pop.

This guy has farther to go. I wanted to make sure my method was going to work with the first guy before I went any farther on this one. His highlights need to come up at least one more level before I do the glazing.

Sometimes the terms "wash" and "glaze" are used interchangeably. They are not the same thing. The purpose of a wash is to darken recesses. A glaze is much thinner. Thinned almost to the point of transparency. A glaze can be used to "unify" colours and make your transitions smooth. It can also be used to produce colour gradients. For instance, a glaze can be used when you want to cast a green glow that emanates from a crystal onto your figures hair or robe. Glazing is a slow process, but doing it is well worth the time and effort.

Wow, these are stunning! Your mastery of blending is absolutely superb! Excellent choice of colors, I love how you still kept things warm and vibrant with your use of the reds and oranges. :)

I appreciate your explanation of the difference between a wash and a glaze, they've always been a bit fuzzy in my mind as to which was meant to be used for what.

That is an awesome mini for your friend's book! Such a dynamic pose, and I really like what you've done with her base. Excited to see where you take this one! :)

Huzzah!

I amlikeing the lookof the dark orc skin. A nice color from the "typical" bright green.

I thought a lot about the skin colour on these. I've seen some very well painted green ones, but I need to work with more dark colours.

Nice orcs. That's kinda where I'm hoping to take mine eventually. They're called black orcs so I don't think they should be green either :P

I hope mine turn out okay. I'm really enjoying these guys. I like how bulky they are.

It took me months to find out what the difference was. Finally I found a video on the Youtube where this guy used both washes and glazes and showed what each was used for.

She's got base colours on her now. I used a deep blue black. It's going to be hard to find the right way to highlight her, given that pose.

Stealth Orcs-Jaysus, don't give the government any ideas. They'll be breeding them in an underground laboratory before you can say goblin. I'm going to bring those armour plates back up through red, back to phoenix red then into orange and yellow so they'll be bright. It will be a nice contrast against the dark skin.

Dorks?

I dare you to say that to their faces :)

They will forever after be known as dorks!

Did I forget to mention how much I love how you're painting up the dorks? Because they're awesome!

Thank you Cash. You two have started a trend with this new subspecies of dorks :)
