Color mixes to make your head explode, or, green + red = purple?

Recommended Posts

There's a great book for color theory study also called: Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter, by James Gurney, very helpful. One of the books I keep on the close shelf near the paint table. A linkie if you like:

As in the Dinotopia guy?

Yep. He's got two books on painting and they're both great reads.

That image is from the linked book?

It's from: http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Yellow-Dont-Make-Green/dp/0967962870

Gurney's other book: http://www.amazon.com/Imaginative-Realism-Paint-Doesnt-Exist/dp/0740785508/

And I've been trying to track down a reasonable copy of his book on sketching: http://www.amazon.com/Artists-Guide-Sketching-James-Gurney/dp/0823003329/

Below you will find a sample of two cards from each of the four Suits - Citadels, Chaos, Fish and Trees. Each Suit is comprised of 14 cards (2-10, Ace, Knave, Knight, Queen and King).

So there's a thing called Inktober/Drawlloween that @Pingo reminded me about, where you draw/paint/sketch/art a thing every day during October. There's the "official" list of daily prompts...

and this other one that Pingo found that I think is cooler.

So who else is up for the challenge?

So I have a concept for a mini but I want desaturated colors. I mostly have bright colors.
Would it be correct to mix in some greens to brown it up? How do I keep it reading red? Is it ok to still have some of the bright but use it as a highlight?
Looking for links to stuff you've painted, free videos that address this, or an explanation of process that will still let me experiment a bit.
      Thanks for sharing your experience/knowledge.

Any interest in a new round of trading cards?
What is an artist trading card (ATC)?
Artist trading cards (ATCs) are miniature pieces of art that are traded around the world. Artists create, trade and collect art at organized "swap" events, either in person or online. The only official rule for ATCs is the size: 2.5" x 3.5". Most swaps are open to any media, materials or techniques as long as the card fits into a standard trading card sleeve.
If I can get 6 or more people I will set up a round of 1-1 trades for forum members. Post here or PM me if you'd like to participate.  I am thinking of an Oct 1 start date and Dec 1 due (in the mail) date.
