Okay, I is back. :)

Awesome, thanks Corporea, those are super helpful! I didn't know he had smokestacks hiding between those big beautiful wings of his. :)

Cheesegear is going to have to wait until at least next week though, because 1) I don't have my GS yet (it's enroute), and b) I only have this week left to complete and mail off my Summer Exchange mini, and I'd like to get it in the mail by Friday.

So, without further ado, http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Bones/latest/77149'>here's the mini I chose.

This guy fit the specifications my exchange person outlined (they requested not to know who was painting for them, so I'm not going to tell :) ), as well as having a lot of potential.

For example, take a good look at his tail. To me, that didn't say "demon tail," that said "cat tail." Which got me thinking. Nearly every painted example I've seen of Damien has had red skin. I wanted to do something more different, so I decided to paint him up as a big-cat person (panther, tiger, lion).

I decided to go with lion.

SuperStock_1626-1520.jpg

Honestly, this picture's just here because there's not enough pictures. :D

It took me a loooong time to decide, but I decided to go with lion because I thought it would be fun to paint his hair up as a mane; also, the fur collar on his coat is too perfect. Plus I've got more of the right colors to do a lion (the only orange I have is the bright Lava Orange, and I don't think I could do a panther justice with only Pure Black and Imperial Purple).

First things first, I took a loooong time removing all of the mold lines from Mr. Damien, Lionman Mage, since I want him to look especially nice.

Damien is clearly casting the ever popular "Rock On!" spell.

Next, I painted him with undiluted Pure White, followed by an undiluted Brown Wash to help seal it in and outline all the details. I'm happy with how the wash turned out, I'm hoping that it will do as a brownlining step. We'll see.

I totally spaced on patching the big gap in the back of his upper spell-casting finger, so I'll have to dab some Brush-on Sealer in there a bit at a time to try and fix it now that I've already begun painting.

Next, color scheme! I already know his skin(fur?), hair and coat collar colors, now it's off to a color wheel to figure out what would look good for the rest of his stuff.

I played around with the https://kuler.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/'>Adobe Kuler color wheel for a bit, and decided that I don't have a clue what I'm doing. Well, okay, I do know that if I want to do complimentary, I'd go for blues since that's the compliment to yellow, but outside of that I don't know what would go well. I don't want to distract from the skin tone, so I'm probably going to go fairly desaturated.

I know I'm definitely going to be using browns, but I don't want to use JUST brown. Maybe some deep reds? I don't think purple would go well, but I don't know why. Same with greens, just can't see them working, though maybe a muted olive would work? There will be bits of black here and there, but I don't want to overdo it. I could just do his coat up like a zebra pelt for lulz, but I feel like that would be overwhelmingly distracting, and this is intended as a gaming piece.

Or, how about this: I do his coat in a much darker version of his skintone, and make his pants dark brown. But, that would leave him without any "pop," hm.

Sorry for rambling, but sometimes it helps me to put my thought process down on paper. Y'all just get the privilege of being privy to it this time. ::D:

Anyways, that's where I'm at with him now. I plan on starting with his skin tomorrow, but I want to get all of the basecoats down before anything else so I'll know whether the colors will work together or not.

Huzzah!

Plus a zebra pattern might make him look too much like a pimp... :lol:

Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks all the mage figures are going, "Rock, rock on!" ::P:

Edit: Forgot to say, going the cat-themed route is totally unexpected, and I can't wait to see how that turns out! Edited by Magnus Mercury

If you want to do a lion man, you've got a few options- you could go with a completely limited almost monochrome scheme- take a look at Cash's recent bronzy man as a good example of that color family. Or, you can camouflage him- put him in clothing that would help him blend into a savannah- ocher, olive, gray- a camouflage jacket and pants would be cool. Or the third route- put him in colors that look harmonious with his coloring. If you're going with tans, reds, browns, yellows for his body, then look again at your lion pic- doesn't that dark blue sky look pretty against the lion? Denim blue jeans would totally rock! A darker brown, almost black coat- like a warm dark leather would look good as well- like the color of the end of the lion's mane. You could shade with dark red- like carnage or clotted red. Heh- I have more pics of lions if you want them!

Corporea I was just thinking that the blue sky was a great place to look for inspiration and you beat me to it with your excellent jeans suggestion! I agree that savannah terrain would inspire colors that fit well with the theme. (Dark olive from trees, dark brown from bark, etc.) You don't have to have your contrast color screaming loud with intensity, you can soften it and mute it so that it feels right.

I do have to say that with his 'rock on' pose I have a hard time seeing him hiding in camouflage... He seems like more of an extrovert to me. :;): But I love the concept, I'm keen to see how it turns out!

(Sorry for rocking up your thread, EinBoot)

Weep for yourself my man

You'll never be what is in your heart

Weep little lion man

You're not as brave as you were at the start...

I think I hurt my brain trying to read that as a Pantera song...

I have that exact visor, only in gray instead of red. ^_^ I like it, but I usually only use the least magnification and the light is useless...

Ha! I have the grey version too. The light really helps in my case, and I've been known to use the double lens magnification level when trying to unearth and remove flash. :-)

I had to turn to Wikipedia to find out who that was. Looks like he was a cool guy, that's just terrible what happened. ::(:::(:

This is what I'm planning on doing, though since I'm going for more of a fantasy feel, I'm not going to be doing camo or denim with this guy (though I agree, they would look awesome). I'm going to do the fur on his collar the darker brown like the end of the mane. Sadly, the only red I have is Blood Red, which is very bright.

I put in an order for the following paint from Reaper on Monday night with the hopes that it will get here by Friday, since I don't really have the colors I need to do this figure justice (specifically, a good olive):

09108: Brush-on Primer
09100: Pearl White

09021: Snow Shadow

09064: Brown Liner

09061: Linen White

09035: Olive Green

09036: Pale Olive
09070: Mahogany Brown
09071: Chestnut Brown
09091: Golden Shadow

The last 5 are specifically for this project, but they're good colors and I know they'll get used a lot. :)

Oh, also ordered 77005: Ogre Chieftain - I will someday do what I threatened to do and turn buglip's http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/47057-the-fighter-of-many-names/'>epic story into a series of photographed scenes (looks like the link doesn't want to work, so do a search for "The fighter of many names" and scroll to post #15)

~~~~~~~~~~~
For Damien's skin, I started with thinned Tanned Leather (2 drops paint, 1 drop water). This stuff thins great. I mean terribly. I mean it thinned a little too well, resulting in something closer to a wash. I lay down multiple coats to get any sort of coverage, and I'm sorely tempted to just go back over all of his skin again with unthinned.
Next, his eyes. Using my Reaper 30-0 (I love my W&N, but it's simply too big for this), I put down some Pure White...
post-11389-0-23651300-1379579434_thumb.jpg
...before thinking to open up an actual picture of lion eyes.
relentless-lion-eye.jpg
Oh, uh...yeah, no white there. So I went back over it with Sun Yellow, because I wanted these eyes to be nice and bright and visible from tabletop distance. (sorry for the blurriness, my camera was fighting with me even in macro mode. They get better later when I switch backgrounds)
I wasn't worried about being a little messy at this stage, knowing that I'll be cleaning up later. Next, I thought I'd try thinned Walnut Brown to do the pupils, since I've really come to like using thinned paint. This did not turn out well.
post-11389-0-19590000-1379579664_thumb.jpg
I had to stop painting at this point for a few minutes cause I was laughing too hard to continue. ^_^ After I calmed down, I tidied up what was there with some carefully placed Sun Yellow.
post-11389-0-55357900-1379579782_thumb.jpg
Yes, it looks weird at this stage, but that's because I'm going to outline the eyes with Walnut Brown, which will make it all work. It'll be like magic, I promise.
I don't have a picture of this part, but I wasn't entirely happy with his left pupil, it was still too big. So I got a little more Sun Yellow on the brush, and accidentally got more on it than I thought, resulting in a mini flood. I started to panic until I realized that it actually had worked out in my favor, and had turned the pupil into exactly the thin slit I was going for. Sometimes things just work out, I guess!
...I get the feeling some bad karma will come along to balance things out eventually. :unsure:
Next, outlined the eyes in (unthinned!) Walnut Brown, again not worrying about the outside edge since I was planning to clean up with his skin tone afterwards.
His eyes are a leeeetle bit off to one side, as opposed to looking down along his arm like I'd intended, but given that his face is a bit lopsided, I'm happy they're at least looking in the same direction!
post-11389-0-61581000-1379580192_thumb.jpg
Next, I used unthinned Tanned Leather to tidy up around the outsides, and voila! His eyes are done, and looking pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. I'm really quite pleased with how they turned out! :D
I intentionally left the lining pretty thick, since lion's eyes do have that lovely dark black lining around them. Now, I know they've got round pupils, not almond-shaped ones like housecats, but I wanted to convey Damien's feline-ness, and I figured this would help. :)
Next is his boots and staff, since I can do those while I'm waiting for paint. If push comes to shove and it doesn't come by Friday, I probably could mix the colors I need, but I don't think my olive would turn out at all well, given that I've only got Grass Green and Peacock Green for greens. -_-
Um, yay? I guess it's a good thing they're creeping you out, since he's intended to be a bad guy. :)
I returned to my P3 Molten Bronze for his boots, though I kept the coverage very very light since I wanted to give more the impression of metal rather than full-on shiny like on Tanya. It's a cool effect, the brownlining is still slightly visible through it. I didn't want to do them in metallic, but on close inspection, according to the sculpt, they're definitely supposed to be metal. Oh well.
I might do a very light brown wash over them just to define the edges a bit more, but I'm not too concerned with spending a lot of time on them, since they'll largely be covered up by these:
post-11389-0-03631700-1379585468_thumb.jpg
I can hear CashWiley's groans from here. ^_^ It's the closest thing my FLGS had to savanna grass, and I'm going to use a lot of them to try and simulate grasslands. They're a little greener than I would have liked, but they're not bad.
I started on his staff next. I'd had this idea of making it look like arcane magics were visible through the top (without doing OSL, I'm planning on doing that with his "rock on" hand), and figured that a nice, shiny metallic would be the way to make that happen. The camera did a poor job capturing it, but I'm going to withhold judgement on whether it works or not until I get the wood color on it (I'm hoping the Mahogany Brown will be here in time!).
post-11389-0-74328400-1379585851_thumb.jpg
And with that, both my back and eyes are saying it's time to stop painting and go to bed already. ::P:
