Mercs vs. Darkreach

Recommended Posts

I got the chance to play some Warlord for the first time since ReaperCon a couple months back. I played a Change of Heart Mercs list while Jason took Darkreach. After seeing our model count discrepancy, Jason did not have high expectations, and I gladly worked to fulfill his early predictions.

From what I can remember of Jason's army:

Darkreach, 1000 pts.

Troop 1
Sinisthreax
Zalash, Assassin w/ Doomshade Boots
Liela Mordollwen, Sorceress
Shiver Spike
Shadowstep Warrior x 3
Shade Beast x 3

Troop 2
Mornenion, Drake Captain
Shadow Demon
Shiver Spike
Darkrime Drake x 2

Troop 3
Phase Cat

Troop 4
Phase Cat

Luck Stone

Mercenaries, 1000 pts.

Troop 1
Deckard Nightveil, Death Priest
Minotaur x 3

Skeleton Swordsman x7

Troop 2
Deckard Nightveil, Death Priest w/ Armor of Courage

Skeleton Swordsman x10

Troop 3
Deckard Nightveil, Death Priest
Skeleton Swordsman x10

Troop 4
Deckard Nightveil, Death Priest
Skeleton Swordsman x10

Troop 5
Deckard Nightveil, Death Priest

Skeleton Swordsman x10

Totem of Battle

This game was definitely decided on initiative order. My bead came up first, and I moved up a block of Skeletons as bait in the dead center of the table. Next came all of Jason's beads. His Shiver Spikes took out a Skeleton, and Zalash took out another one. Due to those boots, I was only able to get 2 of my Minotaurs into combat with Zalash. They did some damage, but he survived. Killing Zalash early was my number one priority going into this game. He has killed me before in the end game when I didn't have anything left that could get past his parried up DV14. Jason advanced a little two far, and I was able to cast Incite on a couple troops of Skeletons and Rush Attack his front line. I killed off all the Shadowstep Warriors.

Turn 2 saw 4 of my beads pulled in a row. More fighting with Zalash, and he finally fell after a couple rounds of fighting. Skeletons brought down the Drakes and a couple Shade beasts. Jason Ironskinned Sini and charged into a Minotaur. The Minotaur got off two cleaving hits in defense, so he made him pay for it. The Shadow Demon charged in against anoth Minotaur, and only got one hit (yeah for no Savage!). The Demon took three hits in return. A Phase Cat and the Drake captain made a break for the Totem to negate the bonus.

Turn 3 saw 3 of my beads pulled to start. The Troop guarding the Totem swarmed the Cat and Captain and took them both down. The other Phase Cat fell to skeletons. By now, most of the Deckards had used up their SP, so began moving towards the center melee.

On Turn 4, Leila was surrounded by skeletons. In a desperation move, she cast Wings on herself and flew across the table to try to negate my Totem. The Deckard on guard duty successfully Winglocked her, and she was immediately swarmed by skeletons. Now that Sini's Ironskin had warn off, he was mauled by a Deckard and a handful of skeletons.

When we called it, Jason was left with a lone Shiver Spike in the corner while I had 2 Troops of Deckards with 4 Skeletons each, and a lone Deckard remaining.

Deckard is great. He is definitely my favorite support caster right now. His ability to cast Smite, Incite, and Beguile is awesome. Also, Domination can be devastating depending upon who you are playing against. Jason usually gets me when he's playing Darkreach. Displaced plus Adrenaline is my bane, and Jason typically uses Sini's Blink switch to great effect. They also have terrific speed, and can usually outmaneuver most opponents. My sheer numbers plus Incite helped counter his speed this game.

Haven't fielded this guy yet. Now I most definitely will.

Great game for the mercs that night for sure. I took a vicious defeat that one for sure. I knew going into it you would have the initiative advantage with your 2:1 bead count, but still did not expect the first 4 beads on turn 2, or for the same to happen again on turn 3. While frustrating for the single game, it (it being the random initiative) is still one of the main reasons I love this game overall.

Still for being outnumbered and constantly on the defensive, never getting to dictate the course, I think I still gave a great fight and took a lot of stuff with me.

Only cry foul item I have in the game was that minotaur getting the double tap on my iron skinned leader. The dice luck for you rolling 3 10s in a row was just stupid ridiculous. An ironskinned Sinisthreax holding the Abyssal weapon should have been able to be way more effective than he was. Had that not happened, he would have kept healing Zalash the nasty with every swing of his sword.
