zauriel56
So I recently got my kickstarter and have started painting in different ways. 1.) I know about the boiling water to bend them into place, but can you do it after painted or will it make paint come off? 2.) I know priming isn't necessary but should I use base coats (don't know if that's the proper name or not) what i mean is will using a first coat make a second coat more vibrant or colorful? I'm new to this and I looked at the FAQ and other stuff on the reaper website but wasn't clear about these things.
buglips*the*goblin
For question #1: It is possible, but at this point it might rely on a whole bunch of untested factors. I had to reboil my unicorn and he turned out okay, but I don't know if it would be safe with other brands of paint. It's best to boil first, if you have to do it after painting then try it at own risk. It might be okay, some of them are, but we don't have a conclusive answer across the board on that. For question #2: A basecoat is generally just the first layer of paint, any colour. Some distinction may be made for an undercoat. The difference is that an undercoat is something you'd use for a specific job. So, say you wanted to do some red over a dark brown colour. In that case, you might use an off-white first before applying the red so that the dark brown doesn't make it look too dark. In any case, if you're not using primer your first coat on Bones should be undiluted. This could be an all over black or dark brown, or you might block in your basic colours (clothes, skin, hair) and then work on shading. Or whatever. That's a fairly complex thing to answer because there's a hundred ways to paint minis and will depend on your tastes and methods. zauriel56
OK good to know. I tried straight painting a couple and then applied a black coat to some first and then painted them. Incidentally one had a bent sword and i had forgot about boiling water.
Magnus Mercury
1.) I know about the boiling water to bend them into place, but can you do it after painted or will it make paint come off? I'm curious about this, myself. It's possible that a painted Bones figure could get warped, so I hope it's possible to make minor fixes without messing up the paint. LittleBluberry
We had some luck using a hairdryer on low on a partially painted Flit. It wasn't enough for major changes, but it did make it possible to open the wings enough to paint them more easily.
