Loss of detail on the Faces of Bones Minis

Recommended Posts

Greetings all!

I've just finished inventorying and inspecting all ~250 of my bones figures from the Kickstarter order! Lots of great looking minis in this order. One thing that has been fairly prevalent however, is the complete lack of detail around the chin, nose, and mouth areas of the minis. I have roughly 20 minis with this problem to varying degrees. Some of them are so bad they don't even have chins or noses!

Has anyone else experienced this problem or am I being overly picky?

I'm OK with putty, but if I was that good, I wouldn't need to buy minis in the first place. Given the face is one of the parts of a mini that is immediately noticable if something is amiss, this has troubled me to no small degree.

I'd post a pic, but Reaper doesn't allow image hosting on this part of the forums.

I'm positive Reaper will take care of the models that I'm not happy with, but I wasn't sure how prevalent this problem actually is as I couldn't find a single topic on this issue.

*Can't wait to get started!*

Could you maybe post pix elsewhere on the net and link to them?

Interesting. I've seen some apparent lack of detail that's caused by the slight translucency of the Bonesium, but I've not seen the lack of detail you describe above.

It may be worth slapping a base coat on to see what happens.

The few Bones I have retain pretty good facial detail. Even the other reviwer in my team at WAMP noted in her review how good the details were.not sure what maight be going on with yours. Sorry.

Put a bit of paint on before judging them. Some of the test ones I got in the store looked like there wasn't much detail at first but they were much better after they had paint on.

Course it is also possible you got a bad patch, don't know what the process for making them is but if you yank some out before they finish baking they might turn out flat.

I do not necessarily think it is the bones which is losing the details. I think it just might be those models themselves that have very soft faces. John at PlasticLegions.blogspot.com is going to do some comparisons in the near future between painted metal and bones for the same models.

Once my camera with a decent macro mode charges, I'll see if I can't post them somewhere so you guys can see what I'm talking about.

I'm just concerned because this is roughly 10% of my models with this problem. And, keep in mind, it's not a lack of detail in all cases. some of the minies are literally missing their lower jaws and noses. Either that or half of their face has no detail at all. It's definitely not caused by the semi-transperant nature of the bones plastic. It's amost as if not enough plastic was injected into the mold. If this is the case, the only reason I'm seeing it on faces is simple: that's the only place I bother looking because I cannot reliably repair molding and casting errors in this region. Anywhere else I can make it look passable, but any errors on the face are instantly recognizable, even to a layman.

Like I said earlier, I know Reaper will take care of me, and I'm extremely pleased with the remainder of my models (minus the extremely flexible bones material also trending in another thread).

Two of my bones models were missing noses/chins. Overall, considering how many models there are, that's not a bad ratio of miscasts. I have gotten enough miscast metal over the years, too, so it's really not that concerning or surprising.

Considering how many sets they had to ship and that they had the bones boxes assembled in china, I was expecting that some miscasts would slip in there.

I noticed that at least one of my minis is missing part of its nose. I can't decide if it's worth asking for a replacement or not for such a minor issue. It is on a mini I was particularly excited about though, so I might.

I agree that this isn't a problem with Bones or Reaper; it's just an unavoidable issue with molds. Every so often there'll be miscasts.

While I haven't been over every single figure with a fine tooth comb, I'm not seeing the detail loss that some people are reporting. Oh sure, there is some difference between Bones and metal (and I have the metal versions of probably 75% of the Bones line, so I can put them side-by-side on my desk), but if people are seeing some "soft" casts (that's what they call it when metal doesn't fill the mold completely; I'd imagine the term applies to plastic as well), then I think Slendertroll has hit it on the head. There will always be miscasts, and sometimes they sneak through QC.

Unfortunately, without any pics (and so far, we've had none, from anyone), this is all just speculation. I'd suspect it's a little of both (the translucent nature of the Bones - I swear, every time I look at the faces on the Black Orcs, they look like blobs, until I get the direct light off them and look closely - and some occasional miscasts).

The light thing also magnifies any mistakes that are there. I went back and looked at the figure I thought was missing her entire nose, and now it looks like either just the very tip is missing or she just has a funky nose. I'd be interested in seeing pics of these dramatic miscasts people are talking about, especially with a layer of paint on them.

I haven't gotten a miscast Reaper yet, which is crazy; every line has a % of miscasts. In a massive shipment like the KS they WILL be there, I suggest inquiring about a replacement. It might take a while, for obvious reasons.

DON'T THROW THEM AWAY!

There is alway a Zombie or Ghoul or Dragon or whatever happy to get them in their mouth, hands or on the base.

I will agree there were a few that seemed off like I was looking at pretty crappy models in regards to the face. But I will have to take a closer look. I did notice one of my nova solider was a miscast. His visor on his head is misaligned completely.
