buglips*the*goblin
Normally I'd agree, except in this case I'd be satisfied only if they can stand up. Bases or no bases. I would put "able to stand up" in the critical requirement column, rather than the "would be nice if" column. ETA: And my Wyrmgear might not count for that anyway, since I have modified him. So any instability could be my own doing there. He might stand up just fine when assembled as recommended. Still might. In any case, I couldn't blame Reaper for it if I did it. chaosscorpion
I agree Buglips, standing is important. I haven't put any of my larger figs together other than a quick dry fit with the exception of the Cthulhu, I gave away as a present to a friend of mine. buglips*the*goblin
Deathsleet looks to be the only problem child, and that's solely down to the weak ankles. He balances pretty good on his little bases, except that his own weight makes the ankles bend until he falls over. Wyrmgear is stiffer, so shouldn't give grief like that. And I think Ebonwrath should be okay, too. Anybody who has a Deathsleet that isn't causing trouble, please let me know if the legs are flexible or stiff. If it's not a problem and they're still pretty flexible, then there might be a solution for the rest of us. Well, other people. I've fixed mine. Fixed-ish. Whatever, it's done now. Anyway, if you have flexible legs and he stands up, if you can share some pics of his pose that might help. Try to match that, see if it balances. And if they're not a problem but the legs are stiffer, then it might be some of us got some accidentally more flexible than originally intended. I also tried boiling and setting him so he was leaning back and resting on his tail more, but it only prolonged his tipping time.
badocter
I confirm my Deathsleet is also week kneed and bends forward if free standing. Like you, I will be attach his tail to whatever base I am using to anchor him from tipping. I agree they need to use a more rigid plastic for this guy.
denneyg
I don't have a Deathsleet, but my Jabberwock is having the same issue. And this is without even being assembled.
buglips*the*goblin
I haven't checked my Jabberwock. I just looked and he is tippy, but also badly warped. In a minute or so I'm going to boil him and straighten him out, then see if he's still as front heavy.
MarshallJansen
I attached my Deathsleet to a Gale Force 9 Econo-base as soon as I assembled him, because he wasn't stable otherwise. He stands fine on his base, and I didn't have to attach his tail to anything. He seems to be fairly stiff on the 'soft->stiff' scale, as well. buglips*the*goblin
Hmmmm. Very interestink. My jabberwock boiled upright just fine and doesn't fall over now. And he's also pretty stiff. ETA: scratch that, he just fell into the gutter. I'll admit to some burdgeoning disenchantment with the design of some of these new figures. JackMann
Hopefully, once production moves in-house in a couple of years, they'll be able to make sure these issues don't come up.
Gilfander
My Jabberwock and Ebonwarth also both have balance issues. Jabberwock falls forward and Ebonwarth to the side. I think his center of gravity is off with the wings outstretched. I plan to base all four of they plus one of the demons and some of the med-sized guys. Wyrmgear stands OK but he is a little shakely. I think a table bump could knock him over so I'm basing him too.
buglips*the*goblin
Basing may be inevitable for these. I was hoping to avoid it. ETA: Not the first time for this, though. Kasadya, princess of hell is a fine miniature but she won't stay up without a base. Edited July 29, 2013 by buglips*the*goblin
chaosscorpion
Would the simple use of a penny or nickle glued to the end of each appendage solve the problem, thereby limiting the base size for you Buglips?
kimbers
Heavier but still small bases (like metal washers) may do the trick. My Deathsleet seems fine (his legs feel quite tough) but I've stuck him down so he doesn't fall sideways (I only did a quick boil and ice to get a little bit of a leg bend out). I don't think he has the weak knee problem but I should be able to tell by morning. Maybe a plastic batch was mixed up a little too soft. Teskal
I haven't the time to check all my bones yet. But tested Deathsleet or Jabberwocky. I could get Deathsleet to stand alone. Jabberwocky needed a counterweight, because of the crooked, wobbly base. I think with the correct base, both should have no problems. I didn't boil both. I have found few miniatures with detail problems. I do not know if it is normal or the chinese were little sloppy with the production of bones. ETA: scratch that, he just fell into the gutter. I'll admit to some burdgeoning disenchantment with the design of some of these new figures. Yeah, mine boiled up just fine initially as well (he was pretty much flat when I got him). I set him aside to work on other things, and next I noticed (a couple of hours later) he had fallen over. I figured I'd knocked him over and just set him back up. He stayed just fine, and I went back to what I'd been doing. Next I noticed, he'd fallen over again. What appears to be happening at least to mine is that he'll slowly bend while standing up until he overbalances and falls. At which point his leg bends back to a position where he can support himself again. Stand him back up and he stays up just fine. For an hour or so. I've reported it to Reaper, we'll see what they have to say about it.
