300pt Sample Armies

Recommended Posts

In an attempt to bring some people over the "maybe" line to try warlord at our FLGS, I'm working with the staff on 300pt sample armies that'll be kept in a notebook. We'd like to do an entry for each army. If some of ya'll want to share a list you think would be good for this, I'd appreciate it.

Here's the goals I'd like each army to meet.

300 points

Good representation of army's style

(for example, I'm pulling my 300 nefsokar out to redo because it's all mummies, and doesn't represent the mixture of nefsokar very well)

6-12 models

The store will eventually want to have models for each army so they would prefer it to be small, but big enough to show off cool models

Flexible

Try to avoid 1 trick pony armies for this, since who's playing that army won't be the same person all the time and may not think the same as the previous player (or you!)

Thanks a head of time! Eventually I'll probably build a pdf of the end army list and repost here for other groups.

I'd recommend you not worry about representing everything in a faction too much when it comes to the composition. In fact, I'd advise going the opposite direction, for several reasons:

1. Ease of learning - a small number of datacards is going to be easier to digest in small, starter game. A mummies-heavy Nefsokar list would actually be a great learning army.

2. Limiting scope - by having less datacards, it also means less SAs and the like to worry about. A more focused list is going to be easier to control for a new player.

3. Synergies - part of what will differentiate factions for new players is how they play, and staying focused to a group of datacards that play towards Faction abilities is one way to emphasize those differences.

To that end, I'd build a list something like this for Reptus:

Reptus - 300 points (Outcast Doctrine)

Troop 1
Ssathuss
Ssudai, Nagendra Mystic
Nagendra Warrior x 5

Troop 2
Klahan, Nagendra Sniper

or, for Overlords:

Overlords - 300 points (Followers of Khardullis Doctrine)

Troop 1
Lorena of the Whip
Moraia, Warbride
Bondslave Survivor x 3
Daughter of the Whip

Troop 2
Taletia, Disciple of Ashkrypt
Moraia, Warbride
Bondslave Survivor x 3
Daughter of the Whip

What this might mean is that you end up with a couple lists for a faction, showcasing their strengths. Just a thought.

Prompted by the question of what is the difference between the elf factions I thought I'd give this a go;

Tembrithil - 299 points (Summer Blossom Doctrine)
Army: Luck Stone
Troop 1
Talathlan, Ranger + Tree Bark
Tembrithil Ranger x 4
Drys, Dryad

Troop 2
Tanwylen, Satyr
Faun x 4

This is an army of stealthy rangers that can insta-grow forests to teleport around the battlefield and provide themselves cover.

Elves - 299 points (Protectors of Tirithial Doctrine)

Army: Luck Stone

Troop 1
Selwyn
Vale Archer x 2
Vale Swordsman x 2

Troop 2
Turanil
Vale Swordsman x 3

Vale Warrior

This is a "swift striking" armour with a little ranged support.

Reason 1 and 2 I totally agree with, and reason 3 kinda argues for what I actually want. 300 points isn't really enough to show everything an army can do, and I realize that. What I meant (and I think your two options have done, as have Obsidian Craine's) is a list that shows why army x is different than army y. So that between reading the army fluffs, and playing a few of the sample armies, a new player can make an informed decision. At that point they can see all the things an army can do once they dig deeper.

298 Points

Hand of Sokar Doctrine

Desert Swiftness

1 Senet Net'merew

2 Khamsin Lancer

1 Chosen of Sokar

1 Sokar's Disciple

3 Awakened Mummies

Overlords, Onyx Legion version:

Overlords - 300 points

Troop 1
Corvus
Ranthe, Evangelist of Khardullis
Overlord Warrior x 5
Overlord Crossbowman

Troop 2
Mageguard Golem

It makes no use of the Hunter's Edge ability, but that is harder to do without Matisse, who could be quite the beast in this size game.

Hey, I've yet to play a game but I'll take a shot!

Halflings (Beta), Small but Quick Doctrine - 300 points

Troop 1

Hellakin Goregutter

Boarder Guard x 4

Standard

Luck Stone

Troop 2

Ella Shadowfeet

Halfling Skirmisher x 4

Stealth all around plus a bonus to DV . . .

Wanted to stay away from ranged attacks. Just doesn't seem to be enough fielded to allow for an effective Ranged Troop.

Once I actually get t o play a game I'll know better what I just committed these guys to. :-)

Ok, that was interesting, so I'll take a shot!

Halflings (Beta), Small but Scrappy Doctrine - 299 points

Troop 1

Hellakin Goregutter

Boarder Guard x 2

Halfling Skirmisher x 4

Sky Guard x 2

Luck Stone

Troop 2

Dicarius Darksword

Magic Ranged Weapon

Stealth all around plus the Tough/0 SA and an aerial squad to boot . . .

In this instance I decided to add a solitary figure with good ranged attacks. Might not do any good though if he can't keep his distance.

As I said before, once I actually get t o play a game I'll know better what I just committed these guys to. :-)

Be cautious of lists like the last few; as I alluded to in one of my Overlord posts, a point-heavy model (especially like Rauthuros) can be very hard to deal with in a small game, unless both sides are packing the same kind of firepower. Here's an alternate Demonic Conclave list that still takes advantage of the FA bennies:

Darkspawn - 300 points

Troop 1
Ashakia
Incubus/Succubus Warrior x 3

Troop 2
Meridiana
Goatman Demon x 4

Troop 3
Marilith

Luck Stone

I'm guessing that every army can do the "Warlord on Patrol" single Troop army which could be a lot of fun as a starting point for a Warlord League. Week 1-2; 300 points, 1 troop, must include the Warlord. Week 3-4 500 points, 2 troops, must include a warlord. Week 5-6 750 points, 3 troops, must include a Warlord, Week 7-8 1000 points must include a Warlord.

Nonsense!

Rauthuros

Book of Tactics

Magic Weapon

Flask of Hellfire

Luck Stone

297 Points

:upside:

Actually I thought about posting a warning like yours, but I suck at writing and couldn't think of a way to write it that wasn't a complete run on sentence or nonsensical. So I just didn't include it.
