Vintage Fantasy Figure...Face in Cauldron

FIGURE...Grenadier # 2009 (Wizards Room Set - Cauldron with conjured face)...circa (1980-81)...

 

MY TITLE FOR PIECE...The Black Cauldron...

 

STORY LINE...The adventure group has battled climbing the mountain for hours now...crevasse after crevasse...higher and higher...to a height were only moss covers the rocks and gnarled barren trees dot the landscape.

 

You finally reach a small rocky plateau...at the back end is a rocky niche that contains a black cauldron just sitting there. Upon investigation, you find that there is no fire and the cauldron is ice cold...yet it seems to be boiling with some kind of reddish/blackish liquid filled with things that look like tentacles. As you stand at the ready, poised for action, a reddish black mist or smoke rises from the vile liquid and a face appears in the mist (a face that looks like it has seen the coming and going of many ages past).

 

The face speaks in a voice that sounds like it is coming from the depths of an endless void...he says " your destiny awaits...he knows you are coming...he waits "!

 

In a flash...the face is gone...the cauldron is cold and empty...your group stands on the small rocky plateau alone...alone, but with each persons thoughts of what just happened and what might be coming next.........

Great stuff on the piece as usual but, where's the rest of the room from the set?

 

Mines been safely tucked away in its box for the past 30+ years.

(I keep meaning to get to it, but so many distractions...)

The face is great, the basing is (as I think we can pretty much expect from you at this point) quite good, the only issue I have is that the cauldron itself looks a little neglected.

 

Face reminds me of the old wizard from Dragonslayer.

I do not understand what you mean by (the cauldron itself looks a little neglected)...can you explain...I did not want to make the cauldron look well kept and pristine...nor did I wish to have it neglected looking showing the wear of time with rust and corrosion...I wanted to have it express an item of unknown origin that has seen the passing of time but maintained a simple black unmarked state that is void of any identification.

It looks very plain, to the point of being just black with no shading, highlighting, or differentiation between the separate elements. If this is your intent, then that is just how it looks, but it has an unfinished quality, especially in comparison to the rest of the model.

Inspiration comes from within...from the inner kid in you...from your heart & soul. I am inspired everytime I view the works of you members; it just drives me to work harder on the figures I want to paint (currently I am doing older vintage pieces). I started this project on or about the 23rd of July (this year); my inspiration drive has allowed me to clean, prime, paint and base mount (9) vintage figures that I have posted to date...that is (9 completed figures in 18 days)...I can not offer you any more inspiration than that...And captenglish; I am an extremely slow painter and producer of finished miniature figures.

I have that problem to i buy any cool looking drawf i see. The real problem is there is one race i have never, ever played.....Dwarves.

I like how you've come up with a story to place a cauldron in the middle of nowhere. Props for not just smacking it in a room/with the rest of the set/as intended!

 

I do agree the cauldron probably would look very good with a few highlights. Not to make it look new or old, but just to give a little variation in the black and to show it's metal.

Having received two specific comments in regard to the cauldron looking just too plain in the solid black state...I will give it a light steel dry brushing to add some sense of dimension and body hi-lite to it but still maintain the solid integrity of a/the (black cauldron). I will post the photo tomorrow...I always welcome comments...I ponder on all that I receive, but only act on the ones that I consider to be of a true and valid nature (in my opinion)...Thanks guys.

9 figures in 18 days would be a speed paint in my book. Regarding inspiration, I respectfully think you have contradicted yourself, but I think I get your point and agree.
