Anyone play Munchkin?

If you have the group that appreciates Munchkin Fu, it's a riot. If not, it's a fairly boring slog through a pile of cards.

We used to play Munchkin all the time, but I've grown less impressed as we've picked up more expansions. We have almost all of them, and I've played with all of them at some point, and each genre expansion is pretty good in its own right if you like the genre, but if you try to play with more than two genres at a go, I find it bogs down. I can't imagine playing more than ten levels, it would take six hours to finish twenty the way we usually play.

If you're looking to pick up a new expansion, I like most of the expansions for the base fantasy game, and they don't add too much playtime to the game by themselves.

For the genres, pick up one you're interested in. I love the pirate genre box and its expansion.

Plus, so long as you're only playing one--maybe two--genres at a time, the little bonus packs (Fairy Dust, Christmas, etc) are pretty nifty.

And if you need dice bags, pick up the Ducks of Doom and Gloom; they're adorable, and the Munchkin cards they come with are great additions to the game. And while you're at it, pick up Gloom, because it's one of the Best Games Ever (imnsho).

Munchkin is a lot of fun. Though my experience isn't one of a short game. I have had a lot of 3+ hour games (those were with six or more people and some slow or new players though).

Somehow all the players I drag into a game of munchkin want to play again even if they lose horribly. I think this is the most important aspect of a game, that everyone enjoys it.

Muchkin Quest is also a lot of fun. The ability to mess with each other is a little less than in the cardgame, because for a lot of things you have to be in an adjacent room. This is offset by the roaming packs of monsters. Nothing more terrifying than a doomstack with your color approaching... ::o:

We usually play with 4-6 people, and our friends have all of the Fantasy expansions, Pirate, Zombie, and Cthulhu (I think they have all of those expansions as well). It's a fun game, but can get kind of repetitive if it's all you play when you get together. We like to throw a game or two of Flux (preferably Cthulhu Flux) in the mix.

Three daughters Delvish! You must have been an ET, WT or nuke of some kind.

Comms ET submarines, so I have the bubbleheads curse as well. I am SO looking forward to four years from now when I have 3 teenage daughters in the house. Must remember to move further away from the base by that point.

 Good idea

At one point in time, I owned every single card Steve Jackson had produced for Munchkin, even the ones that were given to store owners only. But, we grew bored with the game as the years wore on and so I sold all of them. We would rather play a cool board game instead. ::):

Wow, that's pretty impressive considering the volume of products out there. I heard from a game store owner that once people buy Munchkin they end up buying everything for it, more so than other games. I haven't played it for years yet but I can see the repetitiveness getting to me one day. The expansions and different versions stave this off for awhile but in the end, it is what it is. I built a board for my games and enjoy using it. It gives the game a more concrete feel, plus with kids (11, 11, and 10) they like to move the pieces through the rooms. It illustrates more easily who's winning and they like to see other players get knocked back. Boom!

Kay, you're absolutely right. A little drink makes any game better. Holding grudges suits the game's purpose, in fact I think it's one of the tenants of Munchkin, but they'd have to be pretty petty to stay sore after that.

What's also fun is to listen in on my kids when they play without me. The house rules they make up and arguments they have over "the finer points" are pretty priceless.

Oh, holding grudges though the game is fine, it makes for more interesting games.... and the next game etc (we have been known to play 2 or three games of Munchkin in an evening) but I once played with someone who held grudges outside the game, never again.

Another rule of thumb - don't play with people who over analyse the game - it makes a simple straightforward game take hours and hours.... painful.

Yep, mine do the same thing. Most of the time the girls stuck together and team up against the boy, at others the boy helps out the one sister that hasn't hassled him as much that day. Sort of a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" kind of strategy. One of the girls plays like Tony Soprano. She'll offer help, and if tells the person who's turn it is that if they don't accept it she'll start adding wondering monsters or juice the current monster up. That's a fun conversation to have with your 5th grader "Honey, that's called extortion, and good job for coming up with it in the game, way to think outside the box; but don't do it at school."

Lately the kids and I have been playin Dominion. Great deck building game with all sorts of twists. Playing with only 10 sets out of 25 in the base game allows a lot of unique combinations. There are several expansion packs that extend the play further . My oldest boy wont play with the Thief at all,mas the one game he played with it, he ended up with almost no money.
