Bones Kickstarter #2 Pre-discussion

Recommended Posts

It certainly paid for stuff. I'm not sure why you would think it didn't. the fact that the stretch goal was free to reaper made it easier for reaper to pay for stuff. It's not deceptive or fake. things like that are indeed real stretch goals. They just aren't exciting stretch goals.

It seems like you ignored everything I wrote. I even said explicitly that the money paid for something (the familiars). What it didn't pay for was the actual stretch goal it was attached to.

Maybe it's the definition of a Stretch Goal that is the issue.

Is a Stretch Goal

A: "Hey, if we make it to $X, we're going to give you this as a prize!"

or B: "We need $X to reach Y product."

I always viewed Stretch Goals as the first definition.

I think it depends on what it is for, it could be either A or B.

I don't like stretch goals where it's if we reach this goal you can now buy this........and show you the finished product.

With these goals what is the amount to reach the goal actually paying for? It's already made, so no design or modelling fees, and we're paying for the product, so where does the money go.

It might already be made, but it still needed to be paid for and, of course, the cost of actually producing more than just the master must also be considered. The actual production molds are made from the master, I believe. So there is still significant expense.

I am no authority, but I feel pretty strongly that the formal definition is "A". As I tried to allude to earlier, the two are often indistinguishable in a "durable goods" Kickstarter, but look at other kinds:

The OOTS KS had all kinds of PDF rewards which were crazy popular to help drive more pledges (and they worked). The value was in no way tied to the cost for the artist to write and draw the extra material, it was a simple reward for more pledging.

Video games sometimes offer bonus content, badges, graphics, or other junk to drive money. Again, the cost of the bonus is not directly tied to the reward.

The Dice Tower campaign was there to fund audio and video production, but a sizable fraction of their rewards were donated game bitz from other companies. Once again, reward for pledge, not a direct dollar for dollar production increase. (These were really additional pledge levels, rather than stretch goals, but they had a similar design and effect.)

Reaper, and other manufacturers, may often include "Type B" stretch goals to get to add more product to their line, but I would not call that a fundamental property of a stretch goal.

This.

I make several sculpts in anticipation of being able to show them to my KS backers IF we reach our early goals, I need to have something that looks like the final product or I'm facing "it's just concept art, I'll wait to pledge until I can see the final sculpt".

Seems more like you are ignoring the point. What does it matter if they throw in a free thing in? Would it have made a difference if they threw the free stuff on top of the familiars stretch goal rather than at the half-way point to the familiars? The end result is the same. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding your complaint.

@Reaper - if it's logistically easier for you to push back this KS until after Christmas shopping and after the New Year's diners, that's no problem for me. My wallet will thank you.

I'm confused DLMyst. If the next KS is good then you won't be backing it?

what I meant was that KS1 was a great deal, I'm happy I backed it and I don't regret anything. But, given how many unpainted bones I have at the moment, I would need an even better deal to consider spending that much money again.

I'm not trying to sound greedy, it's like passing on seconds at supper. to put it simply: my appetite is sated.

Well with almost a month since the flyer was released do we know anything 'new' about the next KS? I guess all we know is it's Bones, it's Kickstarter and it's this fall. Anything else? Has anyone discovered other information at any shows or by other duplicitous means? Thanks so much.

I went by the reaper store in Denton last week and they said the kickstarter would be sometime in September.
