I'm back into the Malazon Book of the Fallen. Just started Reaper's Gale. Every book in the series so far has been among the best fantasy I've ever read. If you want to get into a gigantic multi-book epic but also be consistently entertained, look no further. Violent though, and quite graphic.

I started reading "Hidden Empire," but then got sidetracked with binge watching "Arrested Development."

I got somewhat through Gardens of the Moon and just got irritated- it was just so angsty!  Everyone angrily did this and broodily did that, it was just so distracting.  Was it me or should I try again?

I really liked the Malazan series, even if at points it can be very convoluted and/or self-contradictory so it's not always easy to follow what's going on.

 

It's been a while since I read Gardens of the Moon, but I think I remember that quite a few of the characters were driven by (real or perceived) past wrongs that they wanted to avenge, so maybe it's not just you. But the first book is kind of stand-alone. Several things are ret-conned or at least reinterpreted in the following books, and some characters behave very differently, so I'd say give it a second shot and maybe try to get through the first 2-3 books.
