Question on a mini

I have a question on this mini to anyone who has painted her or even looked at her.

 

She's 77036 Devona, Female Wizard in the preview section and part of the bones kickstarter. On her back are these two serrated bits that I can't figure out what they are as far as clothing or armor.

Looks like some sort of cape/shawl/something... cloth would be my guess anyway.

Yeah, it's something. I'm just having a hard time trying to figure out exactly what it is and how I should paint it. I think maybe my Google-fu is weak since I can't find any painted examples of her anywhere yet.

I assumed they were cloth sashes, and painted them to look like wings.

Any woman who gets customized half-plate armor with hearts on the chest, has a strong sense of Whimsy and style.

 

Oh I know it says female wizard, but im pretty sure that is heavy armor and a polearm.

Yeah, she's an odd one. I have her as an NPC magus in my Pathfinder game, but when I took a close look at her last night to start with more of the paint job I noticed those strange things and was left scratching my head as to what exactly they are supposed to be.

I think those 'wings' are supposed to be cloth [streamers?] with "dagged" edges. Her steed is decorated with more of the same.

TGP - I think you are absolutely correct there after looking at that inspiration gallery. For my purposes she doesn't need those cloth streamers, so I think tonight I'm going to modify her and cut them off her back. It's more in line with what I think she should look like on my table. Thanks!

They are dagged sleeves, slit to the top and pushed back. Kind of a strange arrangement but you can do things to fabric in sculpture that wouldn't work in real life.

She definitely has a polearm. Vaguely voulge-like:

She looks like a fighter to me. Sabatons, greaves and poleyns for the lower legs, and triangular shaped tassets, and a mail skirt for the hips and thighs. She has an odd, very narrow breastplate with bare shoulders. You can see at the narrowest point there are straps around her torso to hold the breastplate. Arms look like simple fabric.

 

She appears to me that she has tucked her houppelande behind her, although part of it is still tucked in at her belt. She is preparing to go into battle but is hesitant to chop off an orc's head as she doesn't want to get her expensive overcote all bloody.

It's funny, she's a PC mini in the campaign I'm in, but I hadn't really looked at her too closely until now. She is a bit odd; from the waist down she's dressed like a fighter, but from the waist up she's dressed more like a stereotypical mage. And the tip of her spear...staff...thing on my model is kinda wonky due to big mold lines, but I think maybe it is supposed to be a spear.

 

I kinda wonder if maybe she's pulling a fast one on her enemies, since with her overskirt down she'd definitely look like a mage, especially if her spear blade were painted to look like wood. But with her holding the overskirt aside, we can see that she actually has armor on! Surprise!

I can't find the original preview photo of the green that was posted almost a year ago. IIRC the spear tip is supposed to be rock or crystal. It's much less distinct in the Bones version. I was frothing at the bit waiting to get this figure in metal (it was slated for spring release and got delayed) as it was perfect for the Frost Wizard I was playing at the time. I'm still waiting for it in metal as I'm not happy with the way the plastic version came out. It's a stunning model and needs to be made in metal.

Bah, not all wizards are bound by D&D rules. A you'll recall, Gandalf carried around a big ol' sword. I've never been able to come up with a meaningful reason why wearing a coat of chainmail would impede your ability to wave your arms and chant faux-Latin words, especially at higher levels, when you can do things like stop time and control people's minds. And staffs are very common among wizards throughout the lore, so it seems practical to stick a blade at the top of one, in case anyone tries to get too close.

 

Frankly, she just seems like a very practical adventuring mage to me.

Frankly, she just seems like a very practical adventuring mage to me.

I want to say it comes partially from the whole "Iron cancels magic" idea (that I believe came out of european faery folklore). Plus, it was a way to make classes seem different. ;)
