Suden
Plus, wizards are gods in D&D, always have been. They needed to be a little squishy to to offset it.
Slendertroll
Oh sure, I think it makes a lot of sense from a game-design perspective, just not so much from a fluff/lore perspective. Which is why I always roll my eyes at people who insist that such-and-such a thing can't be a [thing that existed well before D&D], because their preferred game system clearly says XYZ! TGP
If anyone is interested the original Lady Devona of the Ivy Crown is an elite mounted model, from the Crusader Faction of the Warlord game. She is a two track (2 hits) model with partial heavy armor, armed with a knight's lance (which she wields from a side-saddle position ) and spell casting ability from the Tomes of Inferno or Storm. She's a fighter-mage in D&D terms, I suppose. ... I've never been able to come up with a meaningful reason why wearing a coat of chainmail would impede your ability to wave your arms and chant faux-Latin words, especially at higher levels, when you can do things like stop time and control people's minds. And staffs are very common among wizards throughout the lore, so it seems practical to stick a blade at the top of one, in case anyone tries to get to close. ... The armour-negates-magic thing is a feature of some fantasy literature. "Cold Iron" cancels "Magick" is the principle. I don't recall D&D (any version) ever implementing the principle in a consistent way. Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_in_folklore#Cold_iron And, it was a literary trope before these TV types ever made a website: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ColdIron ...Oh I know it says female wizard, but im pretty sure that is heavy armor and a polearm.... I kinda think it is a wizards staff (everyone agrees it is a wooden stick) plus some ribbons or lashings and.., ...maybe a shard of crystal that looks a little like a blade?
