They just opened a FLGS in my little town but it's all GW/Citadel, and Privateer Press for minis. Anyone local is a no go. Going to teach my son and have fun that way, he likes the big robots more than the fantasy stuff (I play Warlord). I miss the stores in the tidewater area of Virginia, with the Wall of Reaper. Sit there for half an hour looking through blister packs till I find something that sparks the imagination. Closest reaper store now is an hour away, little expensive trip just to find my next unfinished project.

what.

Closest thing to a wall of Reaper (that I know of)is Tower of Game's two or three shelves of Reaper blisters... not horrible, but I'd love for a bigger selection, and a rack of MSPs.

Of what store do you speak? Enquiring minds want to know.

It's been 5 years since I lived there so don't hold me to this but even when I went back a few years ago it was still there but here you go.

Just top right of the middle of the picture of the store is an yelloa banner for Innova Disc Golf, to the left of that around the corner is what used to be the wall of reaper. It stradled both sides of of about 8 ft of wall around the door going to the back about 6 to 7 ft up. Then the other one I can't remember the name of but it was in Norfolk. Has big wood door on the front, been there for ever, comeon someone has to know the name of it. It was right next to mr M's which had the best gyros this side of the atlantic. Oh man, now I'm salivating for a deluxe Gyro and a tall cold beer.

That's it though. They do make great games. They just don't tell anybody bout them.

See below - but you need to realize you're about 10 years late to the party.

They're great at coming up with games, getting them developed and to market in a timely manner...not so much.

That wasn't true in the early days though. They regularly delivered 2-4 minis every month during CAVs first two years of existence: 2001-2003. Those were the days! We had dozens of demo reps (although I know a lot of them were just gaming the system for free loot) and Reaper was pushing the game at both Origins and GenCon. FreeFall, Kai, and I did non-stop demos for 3 days at GenCon that first year and had a blast.

But then they had problems w/the guy who made the prototypes. First a small gap and then a big one where nothing came out between fall '03 and June '04. A week later Reaper announced that they had to do a pretty big price increase due to tin prices, and a week after that they announced CAV 2. Then the whole thing went off the tracks.

You kind of reinforced my point. Producing 2-4 minis every month is "making miniatures", what Reaper is VERY good at, not "developing and getting rules to market" which they aren't so good at. CAV2 development was a mess. CAV:SO is an even bigger one.

Campaign Headquarters is, I think, what you're thinking of. ^_^

I used to be a regular customer at Bit of England, somehow completely missed their Reaper selection... I wasn't a mini gamer/player back then, sadly, and the last time I stopped in they had pretty much stopped carrying gaming stuff altogether. Did get some frolfing discs, though, so no complaints.

^_^ Thanks.

YES! Thanks Last Knight it is CHQ. I miss all my gamer friends.

CHQ is gone now, sadly... bought out by Atlantis, then moved.

That is sad. That place had been there for ever from what people told me. Like D&D Red box edition old. I guess tower of games has cut back their selection too then, they used to have about 3-4ft of wallspace for reaper. Bit of england probably cut back after jeremy left. At least I think he left. Said he was going to start his own game store. Can't remember the name of it, showed me the logo for it an everything. Don't know if he ever did it though. He was a pretty cool guy.

Does that mean there's going to be a change in scale for CAV:SO? If so to what?

So the new figs are n scale and the old ones are smaller?

From the post with all the scales:

Ground Distance Scale / Terrain & Buildings / Six Foot Tall Objects (which is sometimes figures)

  • 1:1200 -- 1 inch equals 100 feet ---- 1.5 mm soldiers
  • 1: 600 --- 1 inch equals 50 feet ------ 3 mm soldiers
  • 1: 300 --- 1 inch equals 25 feet ------ 6 mm soldiers
  • 1: 180 --- 1 inch equals 15 feet ---- 10 mm soldiers <----- CAV:SO Scale
  • 1: 160 --- 1 inch equals 13.33 feet --- 11.25 mm soldiers
  • 1: 150 --- 1 inch equals 12.5 feet ---- 12 mm soldiers

Old CAV, marked in Blue, (1, 1.5, 2) may have been a bit of a mish-mash compromise scale.

For aircraft and vehicles yes. CAV and infantry have always been N scale.

WRT to business practices, the long time CAV fans have come to accept that CAV is not Reaper's primary focus. The fantasy figures have always been their bread and butter that receives the updates and development. Even Warlord takes something of a back seat to the non-game specific figures.

There's an idea. Non-game specific Stompy Robots. They just need another entirely unrelated robots game or two.

Solution: a different Stompy Robot Game, new **name, different ***mechanics: 2D12, 1D20, 2D8 ... whatever melts your laser.

**BBM - Bipedal Battle Mechsor DBW - De Bellis Warmecha (DBW is also C - A - V but plus one letter. Just like HAL was IBM plus one letter.)

***Somewhere in another thread around here, there somebody was opining (negatively) about the 2D6 mechanic of CAV:SO.

At least 1:160 is common scale, at least in the model railroad community, that a couple other games use as well (though granted one of them is dead too). I have a handful of N-scale railroad buildings I use for my CAV games. (see here) 1:180 is something entirely made up that matches with nothing and no company makes terrain/buildings for.

And what exactly would they be compromising with? 15mm sci-fi hadn't become big yet when CAV originally came out and N-scale is too big to used with 6mm.

There are a few generic mech games out there, not nearly as many as exist for fantasy gaming, but they do exist.

There are rumors of a CAV kickstarter in one of the other threads around here, albeit smaller and separate from the Bones fantasy kickstarter. If I were Reaper, that's the only way I'd reboot CAV.

Everything's changed in the rough and tumble world of miniatures in the last year.
