pcktlnt
kalpurple.jpg Almost done the basecoat here. Well, on this side. Still have the whole other side to do. I took some time to fill in his purple gasbag, inner liner, whatever thingy. Which brings me to something. In our sometimes passionate debate about the merits of craft paint for the budget-conscious, one of the counterpoints against the economy of craft paint (i.e. look how much you get for so little, as opposed to how little you get in a Reaper bottle) is that Reaper paint goes a long way. Well, I have proof of that. See that bottle cap? That dot in there is what remains of only 5 drops of Dark Elf Shadow. Which was enough to do all of Kaladrax's purple gasbag on both sides (the previously done neck area got a second coat). Undiluted. 5 drops. So we're not leading you astray when we say you get a lot of mileage out of one of these bottles of paint. Can you elaborate on this for new painters. I use one or two drops on my minis and I seem to run out.

I use one or two drops on my minis and I seem to run out. How many miniatures are you using one colour on? Certain colours (for me it's Rainy Grey and Brown Liner) will tend to run out sooner, but other than that even paints I've had in service for years are still half full. That Highland Moss I used on the base here is from 2006, and it's a green I use a goodly bit of. Most of what I run out of, actually, are colours that tend to get mixed in a lot. I bought 5 Bone Triads for Kaladrax, but I'm pretty sure I won't even make it all the way through one (I wanted to be sure of it). Now that said, outside of common use items, a lot depends on your degree of wastage. This kills my supply of Fair Maiden and Chestnut Brown, because I have to mix up a lot more than I need. For Vanessa Redstorm, it was pretty much just her face - but with four brushfulls of FM and one CB I mixed up enough to do an army of faces. I have enough now that really I should just mix that basetone in its own dropper so I don't waste as much. So unless it's a heavy use colour, going on lots of miniatures, and/or you have a lot of wastage, then running out should be fairly infrequent. A small amount goes a long way, was the point of my example there.
buglips*the*goblin
This side is finally almost ready! This side is coming along, hopefully finished soon. And this side of this wing is nearly ready. You know, this whole thing would be a lot easier if he was less three dimensional. There's always another side. Oh well, gots to be done. When I return to the table after this short break, I intend to finish blackening all his bits. That'll only leave this drybrush Bone Shadow coat and then all of his parts will be ready for the final push. Also, had I tried to do this the way I first did the head - with the 2 coats of Bone Shadow, then a wash, then a drybrush - there's no way it could have been done nearly in time. But this way? This way I have a chance. Still by no means certain, there's a lot left to do. Also, when people complained about his tail length I thought it was pretty neat. Now that I'm painting a gazillion vertebrae, I'm beginning to agree it's rather long.

My Well of Chaos easily took 4 drops of Pure Black to basecoat, and it's nowhere near the size of Big K. I'm also trying to figure out what goblin majiiks you employed to make 5 drops of paint stretch that far. Looking good, keep up the good work! You can do iiiiiiit!! Huzzah! --OneBoot :D Well, I don't think it's magic. It just managed to do that much somehow. Then again, my Coat D'Arms Black, which I have been using since 2008 and particularly heavily since I started with Bones, was almost empty when I started Kaladrax. I even had a moment of panic where I thought it was all I had. There was maybe 1/6th of a bottle left. And not only have I pretty much painted him entirely black with it and it hasn't run out, it seems to have just about as much left in it. Maybe it is magic. Elves, maybe? Or possibly crossing the threshold of 1,000 paints has made it reach critical mass somehow. Or maybe I've become so attuned as a Paint Whisperer that it's a loaves and fishes thing now. Hmm. Well anyway, some more progress. The first two bits to reach full completion with the drybrush basecoat (though the main body is now very close behind) were his right forearm and his right wing. Once these were dry, I put a drybrush layer of 50/50 aged bone mixed with bone shadow. This was to test to be sure it would match the head, which was done with a dark wash instead of pure black as a base. And it does! (Remember, the head has an extra layer of highlight). So that's very good news, I was worried about that. All in all it blends together pretty well, though his other body bits have significantly deeper pitting than his head. I'm hoping that won't look weird when it's all together. We'll see. And the rest of my time was spent painting things black. Since you know what that looks like, I figured I'd save taking the picture. The other good news is that doing the highlight layer went super quick, so it looks like painting everything black and doing the bone shadow base will be the hardest part. Once through this, ought to be clear sailing. Come on magic everfull paint! We can do this! I believe in you!
cthulhudarren
You were up very late for a goblin! Or a college student. I am amazed that with all the steps for drybrushing you are able to keep the whole mini looking "even".
