Dark Judges WIP

Recommended Posts

Hi all, recently got the Dark Judges from Mongoose's Judge Dredd Kickstarter. After a foray into the advice section for Fire, I feel I am now ready to tackle these iconic villains. Starting with Mortis as he is perhaps the least important and thus less pressure to get it right first time!

Ps, I know about the flash next to the tail.

Sorry there's been no update, things have been pretty hectic around here with the arrival of our Bones! ::D: Still, managed to get a little bit done:

A simple undercoat, decided to leave the flash by the tail but it's starting to bug me now... ::(:

A 1:1 mixture of Citadel Necron Abyss and Vallejo Black. I'm thinking Necron Abyss might be a good final highlight but if anyone else has an ideas please let me know.

Hopefully another update before too much longer, got about an hour free now. Any and all C&C welcome.

Managed to get quite a bit more done, a few layers on the clothing and started on the belt. From what admittedly little I remember of Mortis, he didn't always have knee guards, but I thought I'd paint those too in good faith. ^_^

The clothing is almost done, likely to give it another highlight and maybe a wash if the figure demands it. Quite pleased thus far.

The front of the knee guards don't show as well due to the light but they received a similar treatment to the belt. Thinking of going for a slightly turquoise green for those but not sure.

This has been the first project in too long that I've really got into; perfect timing, what with 300+ bones now awaiting a paintjob!

One final thing: Mortis has been the test model of the four, but now I'm well underway with him I can't decide which to do next. So I'll let you peeps have a say if you want. Please note, I'm saving Fire for last (very intricate model comparatively) so your choice is limited to Death or Fear. Til next time!

Yes I do, sorry my skill with a camera sucks! I used Vallejo Black Primer, the first couple of photos in the second post are of it primed. I know it looks very watered down, almost wash-like, but yes I did prime them

Some progress, waited until I had enough for an actual update to post. Forgot to take pictures of the initial coat for the bones but here it is after a couple of coats

The base coat was some form of umber, I can't remember which one, sorry ::(: but the next layer was Citadel Bestial Brown.

As is the norm in Britain, the sun quickly hid itself and thus Mortis looks a bit dour. Mind you, it won't be that sunny in Deathworld...

To get the effect of the bone, I used Vallejo Bleached Bone followed by a white highlight. This is shown especially well on the shoulder pad.

Done a little bit more since then, will post another update soon!

Aww yeah, I'm going to be watching this thread. Can't wait to get mine in the mail.

The model for Fire is absolutely astounding. Seriously, it almost makes the 11 months seem worth it! If you want a look at it, I did a piece on the Painting tips and advice section on it.

Would you prefer I started Death or Fear next? That goes out to everyone, not just Dai!

Feeling pleased with this, hopefully the next two should be much easier now I have a scheme settled on.

The first coat of flesh was Citadel Orchide, followed by Orchide and Citadel Knarloc Green 1:1. Then I highlighted with Citadel Rotting Flesh and Vallejo Off White.

Anyone with any questions should feel free to ask, enjoy Mortis for what he's worth. Might even bump him over to Show Off!

Just a quick update to say I've decided to do Fear next, would have a few pictures but it looks like we've been paid a visit by the Mould Line Fairy. After spending so long carefully removing the flash and similar, it's slightly disheartening to see new ones that I'm sure never existed rematerialise. Ah well. Such is the way of the faeries!

Good, I was going to suggest Fear next! Mortis looks good, have you got any ideas about basing yet? Personally, I don't think I'll be able to resist doing skull-encrusted bases for mine.

Yeah, I'm thinking some sort of Deathworld-themed base but detachable. They have to set loose on PCs at some point! Whilst the base is definitely important, I've got 3 Dark Judges and all four spirit forms to paint first so I'm not starting it yet. But thanks anyway!

Well that took a lot longer than expected! I was really getting into this project and feel I've let you guys down a little bit by not going full pace, but unfortunately, Real Life has a way of sapping time (I'm not going to pretend a certain Kickstarter wasn't on my mind as well...). Suffice to say, this project has not been forgotten and I will definitely be tackling it with renewed gusto at the next available time slot.

Again, sorry guys....
