77116: Colossal Skeleton

Another fairly quick paint. Based on a CD with a lot of Pumice Paste. Not a lot to say...took less than three hours spread over several days.

 

 

The players haven't faced this one, yet. Should be good when they do.

I really like that! The detail of the ground being smashed in where his hammer has landed is rather awesome. Great job on a great mini.

Cool. How durable is pumice paste? Looking for something that I can use like Spackle but not useless on anything but display pieces.

MonkeySloth, my basing skills are almost entirely based on the existence of pumice paste. Almost every mini I paint has at least a little of the stuff somewhere, painted as dirt, sand, moss, snow, space spores...I've never seen it go anywhere once dry on the mini, it holds paint well and I've never noticed appreciable rub-off. The only exception to this is the time I forgot it's acrylic-based and threw a based mini in a Simple Green bath...that ended poorly. But unless the people at your game table make a habit of spraying household cleaners at your minis that shouldn't be a problem.

 

Araziel, I wanted the bones on the hammer to be definitively not from the skeleton...the skelly is painted using the MSP bone-colors triad from the KS washed with GW's Agrax Earthshade, the hammer uses the old MSP bones-color triad washed with GW's Carroburg Crimson (I really dislike the new GW wash formulation, but the things were cheap-as-free, so I might as well use them, and they do get decent results. But man, I miss Devlan Mud).

Looking very cool. Lots of contrast and a good aged color for the bones. The "squoosh" is a nice detail. Adds just that little extra to push it over the top.

I just recently finished a few skeletons because I was feeling like I wasn't finishing any minis and they tend to be quick and easy, but your work on this guy makes me realize how much detail can be put into a skeleton. Great color choices, especially the hammer and base.

Yeah, I had the same idea of making them look slightly different. Both so you know it's not his own bones, and to make sure they stick out a bit. Didn't think of pink though, and it looks awesome. Thanks for the colors!

 

As for Devlan Mud, have you tried Army Painter washes?

I've seen the reviews that make the AP stuff out to be a good replacement, but I still haven't picked any up yet. At the rate I lose GW washes to use and evaporation (toss up which one loses more...the new pots are better than the bolters but not great), I'll need to replace them soon, so I'll look for the AP when the time comes. Thanks for the reminder!

Nicely done. I like the dirt gouge and the coloring on him is excellent. The hammer looks "fresher" than he does. Adds character.
