Thinking of using green stuff

I ordered some minis and a few of them are wearing armor with no tops. I know I know not very safe for fighting unless your opponents are going to die from staring to death. I am not a prude but I do have kids that are reaching a certain age were I think nudity is inappropriate for them. SO I plan on using green stuff to make chain mail or plate armor? I can us all the advise I can get.

First, kings to you on taking the plunge. Second, you should jump right into the sculpting section with your questions. I do a lot of converting and gap filling with greenstuff, but I haven't taken the plunge into a full sculpt.

My advice. Make a TINY amount of putty first. Combine the blue and yellow after cutting a sliver from the roll. Start really small. Biggest mistake is making too much right away.

Get the right tools and some putty, and you're off to the races. There are tutorials online and plenty of help in the sculpting forum. Gene Van Horne is notoriously helpful to new sculptors posting there. He's good people, and a treasure in this community. Go seek him out. Go!! And may the dark lords of dice, lead free pewter, and greenstuff go with you!!!

I can totally understand where youre coming from. I am no sculptor, but I think chain will be your easiest. It doesn't really cling to the body, so you will have to build it out on the figure a little bit, but it won't take as much detail work as plate. Most minis, the chain look is just done by poking the sculpt with a pointy object, which sounds easy enough. Best of luck

Opps I posted in the wrong section.I have ordered a few minis that have nudity in them.Though I have no issue with nudity I have young children and don't think it is appropriate for them. These minis will come with armor tops with bits missing at the chest area.I want to make tops for them and am thinking of using green stuff for the first time to make mail to plate armor. I can use all the advice I can get!!

Hi,

1) mix under a warm/ hot running tap - heat increases flexibility and the water stops it sticking to your fingers

2) less is more. Start with adding a little bit. You can always add more laters

3) use some Vaseline for scuting. You can then let the first bit dry over night, wash the next day with soap and a toothbrush and add a bit more the next day re-following staps 1-3.

4) Green Stuff is addictive, once you start modding you may end up sculpting!!

Good luck and show working here :)

The best advice I was ever given about greenstuff is, "you don't really 'sculpt' it, you push it around until it's in a shape you like". This will make more sense when you get started. You have to add the amount that will be needed for the bit you are trying to sculpt because if you add too much it will not work no matter how much you push it around. This is why a lot of people use layers to build up a sculpt.

There is a learning curve. It's always better to have too little than too much. You can always add on more later, and blend it in. You can do a surprising amount of stuff with a dulled #11 X-acto blade, and a few quick homemade implements. I made a tool by drilling holes in both ends of a short section of dowel. I then glued some brass rod into the holes, and added some green stuff to help stabilize it. After the GS cured I filed one side down to a flat chisel shape, and the other side down to a point. Pretty useful.

If there's one thing that ceramics taught me, it's that ANYTHING can be used as a tool, or to add texture. I've used forks, sandpaper, my fingernails, toothpicks, pencils, aluminum foil, crunched up paper bags, even a drink lid once. If it has an interesting shape, texture or pattern on it, it can be used. :)

I haven't personally done anything with GS yet (though I ordered some not long ago), so I can't give you any pointers there. Which is why I'm eagerly soaking up all the advice people are giving here. ::D:

Huzzah!

I concur with Dadcubed, you really must use vaseline or water-based lubricant while sculpting. I always dip my tools in it before touching it to the green stuff, because green stuff can be very, very sticky.
One of the best tools I have in my sculpting arsenal are things called 'color shapers' or 'color shapers.' They're a long tool with ends that come in different sizes, you rub them across the surface of your green stuff to move it around, smooth it out, shape it.

I have a few adventures about using green stuff and my first use of sculpting tools over here in my w.i.p. thread: http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/49097-cassus-many-wips/

Looking at those miniatures, my first choice would be to just file off some pointy parts and then paint the upper body as clothing. BUT I really want to encourage sculpting, as it's so much fun! Frustrating though, but fun =). And I totally agree with the use of vaseline. I started with water as a lubricant, do not go there...

I'm currently working on sculpting a mail hauberk on a Bones Minotaur that has been heavily modified. So far I have been unhappy with my attempts, but I will keep trying. I'd like to see what you come up with for these minis.

Loim, post some pics an a WIP. maybe we can help?
