Bones Kickstarter #2 Discussion

I doubt Reaper would have a problem, since it would be directly on point, useful to the community, likely to sell more miniatures, and darn near free anyway. But if they do, Flickr has been around long enough that it seems likely to continue to be available for some years at least.

I'm just being considerate about it. Should it come to using an external site (I have to do this for the nude ones anyway) then I'm going to try to keep a record of what pictures are where and have back-ups. That way if something does happen, I may be able to restore the missing thread bits on a new host.

I just hate when I find a model WIP on a site someplace through google, and it's 5 years old and all the pictures are pizza boxes.

Bryan needs beer badly!

Looks like another trip up to Denton is in order. :)

I'll say it again I HATE the fact I only live 4 hours from Denton and have yet to see Reaper HQ it's like seeing something in your backyard and continuously not being able to get past the clear sliding doors. *sigh* one day...one day,

I would imagine Orcus and Asmodeus are ok because they actually pre-date AD&D in at least some form.

I do like the way that Reaper seems to be playing to the strengths of the Bones material this time with their newer sculpts. This makes me happy, and optimistic about things to come. Julie Guthrie's new dragon sculpt is probably the 2nd coolest Bones Dragon I've ever seen, after Kaladrax the Ginormous.

4 hours is a bit of a drive. I got tired of making the trip to Shreveport because of the haul. Now I can just go an hour north and play poker until I win/lose then come back home. :) I have only made two trips out to Reaper HQ in the last 6 months. My only trips actually. One was to grab my Vampire box and the other was for delivering the beer Laoke had me buy them.

Edit: to keep this on KS topic... I like the dragon add-ons. I won't be getting them all but I am sure the pledge will be going up a bit more so I can put one or two into the mix.

Reaper is friendly with WotC, it's a small community. They usually run stuff by them first if they think there might be a problem. A "Torask" or "Dohrghask" that vaguely-resembled in size and capability the creature in question, but was distinct enough to be its own thing, would be okay.

The ones that got in trouble forgot the "distinct enough to be its own thing" part.

Im ok with a new name and Im ok if it looks alittle different too...but I seriously get annoyed over WotC and their claiming of certain creatures.

They have a very reasonable claim on the artwork they commissioned and on works derivative of that artwork. They don't have a claim and (unlike a certain game company that used to be based in Wisconsin) they've been really pretty good about not asserting a claim to public domain stuff.

Its not just that. there is no reason they can not allow rights to produce a creature thats simlar. Take Paizo for example. They are prohibited from published anything like Illithids or Beholder related but Asmodeus and Orcus are ok?

The right to control derivative works is a property right. We can argue about the specifics of that, but in the US, it's the congress that decides, and it also implicates international agreements. There's no reason you can't give your car to me, either, but nor is there any obligation. The same thing applies to WotC's IP.

For your specific examples, the ones they protect are ones that were explicitly excluded from the OGL, because they felt that they were both unique and iconic. But Orcus was Roman and Asmodeus was Christian, and both rather predate any version of D&D.

Speaking as some one who has built a campaign world and has an extensive interest in mythology as well as cryptozoology I can say both Asmodeus and Orcus are truly believed demons/devils. Thus they are technically public domain. I believe the other two were created for D&D as I can find no real world analog for them thus WOTC has the right to claim copyright on them.

I could be wrong though. I freely admit I am not always correct. This is based on my own research for a personal campaign world. As for the KS my family is already looking at close to 300 as guaranteeed to be able to purchase

Thank you! I could have sworn that one looked familiar. I went looking for it and couldn't find it, so I wrote it off as something that I might have saw at Reaper that was unreleased.

I feel a little vindicated now (at least, in my head).

Hehe. And to think, Bug, it wasn't all that long ago we were trying to convince you to paint them at all. I even filked. ^_^

Back in 2005 or so, one of my friends said I should post my minis here. And I said no, I can't do that, they're nowhere near good enough. True story, actually happened.

Trolls for everybody!

Yes, yes...I know I need a least a couple for EACH of my players.

Also at some point a Takhisimat, because if I have one in Bones I will paint it. All of it. Possibly in 7 days.

I'm thinking that that is rather unlikely, but here is how you can get it in Bones:

1. Get a bones hydra, Cinder, Deathsleet, Blightfang, and Ebonwrath.

2. Carve and fit Cinder's wings onto the hydra.

3. Replace 4 of the hydra heads (and maybe necks) with the heads from the 4 dragons. (The fifth hydra head will work good as a blue dragon)

4. Paint accordingly.

Andy

Now I want to do this. All I would need is a way to get another Bones Deathsleet.

As others have already mentionned, creatures/characters like Asmodeus and Orcus are public domain.

Beings like Tiamat is a mixed bag. The mythical Mesopotamian Tiamat was a sea serpent mother of all dragons and is public domain. The "five headed chromatic dragon" though is a D&D creation based on the original, and is protected work.

So *if* we get a five headed dragon, it won't be called Tiamat unless WotC allowed it.

I get it. You guys are sick of dragons. three things: ONE in our last KS the Dragons were the single most popular add-ons - every dragon beat out every non-dragon. TWO at all 3 conventions we have done since the KS fulfillment concluded, we sold out of every dragon we brought, and online & Distributor sales are high. THREE: for the last year you people have been begging us to put every dragon we have in Bones to make them affordable.

*table flip*

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Since dragons are so well liked, how about some more Kobolds.

To keep the dragons company.

And lure adventurers to their lair.
